With one twist of an ankle the mood at STAPLES Center went from hopeful to grim. At 15:39 of the second period with Colorado Avalanche defenseman Ryan O’Byrne and Kings’ All-Star center Anze Kopitar fighting for the puck on the boards, Kopitar landed awkwardly on his right leg falling into a heap on the ice.

Kings Honor Ryan Smyth's 1,000 NHL Games Tonight
The Los Angeles Kings will honor left winger Ryan Smyth tonight before their game against the Dallas Stars at STAPLES Center in recognition of his 1,000th NHL game which took place Saturday night. The on-ice pre-game ceremony will take place before the puck drops at 7:30 p.m. and will be broadcast on FS West.

There were a couple of issues for the Kings coming into their game against the Nashville Predators. Being a young team, would they respond after an emotional win Thursday night against the Tampa Bay Lightning? Also, would the Kings defend their home ice against the Predators despite losing their last five games against Predators at STAPLES Center dating back to Jan. 8, 2008?
LAst Night's Action: Kings Offense Wakes Up Just In Time
LA Kings defeat Atlanta Thrashers 3-1. There is no “o” in Kings, and yet again the Kings showed they have a hard time generating any for the first two periods trailing 1-0 to the Atlanta Thrashers heading into the second intermission. But suddenly they woke up scoring twice in three minutes to win their home opener 3-1 for the first time since the 2006-’07 season.

With all the troubles the Kings have had in penalty killing at home, no one would have said last season that they could shoot their way past their problems. The Kings have ratcheted up the offense scoring 19 goals in five games thanks in large part to a retooled No. 1 line.
