We have salad bars and make-your-own sundae bars, even burger bars. It's about time somebody applied this idea to liquor! On weekends Rush Street in Culver City is offering a make-your-own Bloody Mary bar. They fill your glass with Ketel One vodka. You can ask for a different brand, although nobody has yet. Then the bartender meets you at the end of the bar.
You had an awesome night of barhopping but one cocktail too many, you mixed your spirits and you didn't drink a drop of water before you went to bed. Next morning? Raging headache, and the last thing you want to have for brunch is some buttery pancakes drenched in sweet syrup. Blech!
Yes, alas Jones Soda isn't doing its special turkey and gravy soda for Thanksgiving this year. But never fear, you'll still be able to drink your mashed potatoes, and in a martini glass at that, or one of the following holiday specialty cocktails. BTW, not all places are open on Thanksgiving so call ahead if you're really counting on that après-dysfunctional-dinner drink.
It's been all about the morning meals lately: the LA Times proclaimed the return of the restaurant breakfast just last week (although LAist had its finger on the pulse back in February, with our Wake Up LA series). Now Rush Street, the new Chicago-themed restaurant in Culver City, has announced a brunch menu that begins Saturday, September 6th. From 9:30am to 3pm, you can expect to enjoy treats like Belgian waffles and a "Red Eye" burger that includes applewood-smoked bacon and a fried egg. You can also enjoy a little hair-of-the-dog Bloody Mary or mimosa. Or, get the day started right with one of their other specialty cocktails.
LAist is into Rush Street, the new eatery in downtown Culver City. Even I've had a good time there. But the last time I went was pretty unforgivable. It was mid-afternoon, and we had a hankering for some butterscotch pudding, which we still hadn't experienced yet. We stopped by Rush Street, where they seemed to be suffering from a serious case of popular-new-restaurant-itis. We were told that they would not serve us (even though we only wanted pudding -- it's not like they had to open up the kitchen) until five-o'clock. In forty minutes. And even then, we'd better make a reservation, just in case. We could wait in the bar.
Last Wednesday, I spent happy hour at Ugo Wine Bar in Culver City. The week before, we spent it at Bottle Rock (where I've had a great time on the weekend), which was disappointing. It was loud, the service was slow and the food was expensive. Ugo Wine Bar was exactly the opposite and it was such a pleasure. We thought it was Vinum Populi, and it used to be, but these days, it's part of the Ugo empire.
