Relevant Facebook Status Update of the Day

SFist does this column daily, so when we saw this facebook update from a friend, we giggled. He "has decided that Runyon Canyon park is way gayer on a weekday morning than The Abbey is on a Friday night." We believe many LAist readers would agree on this one. Of the hundreds of Yelp reviews of Runyon, many talk about how the park is quite the scene. "Runyon is one of two hikes I do regularly now. It's the easy option. I love tracking all the cosmetic surgery...and that's just the guys," wrote Richard P., who also likes the hike from Ferndell Canyon up to Griffith Park Observatory. "The downside to the Griffith option: about 75% fewer hot bodies and absolutely no celebrities. So you chooses your poison."

Romping Through Runyon

It was somewhere around the fifth sprint across the Runyon Canyon tennis courts on Wednesday afternoon that I realized I wasn't quite as in shape as I would have liked to believe. Or maybe it was as I heaved my way up the hill, ten minutes after the rest of my group. But as I sputtered and gasped towards the top, like a good Health Editor, I was struck by an epiphany: there is an unfortunate reason that this ass is so out of shape, and it was a catch-22. I sucked at Runyon Romp because I never do anything as hard as Runyon Romp.

LAistory: The Outpost Sign

Hiking through the Hollywood Hills, one finds a lot of garbage. There's the usual bottles and cans of various types, old bits of carpeting, couches, bones, bicycles, even old cars sometimes. They all have (little h) history. Someone had to truck it up there and leave it, either to get rid of it, or to live in it, whatever. But very little has (capital H) History to it.

I’m a sucker for natural scenery. I like a vast blue sky, a sparkling snow-capped mountain, a breezy sprawling plain. But around Hollywood where I live, I find that exercising in the outdoors often means kicking up dust and breathing in smog, only to take in the beautiful sights of dried out vegetation and dog poop.

Two friends enjoy the hazy view and cool breeze from the top of Runyon Canyon this morning. What were you doing at 8:15 AM?

If loads of adoring fans, access to every VIP room in town, and a loyal following weren't enough, HBO's Entourage has captured the nation. Yesterday the show's creator, Doug Ellin was interviewed on uber NPR news show Talk of the Nation. The story of an actor's life in LA, the show has found the international following as far as Malaysia. From The Grill to The Urth Caffe and Toast, every week I look forward to seeing where the boys will show up. Here in LA, I have spotted the cast at many local hangouts. Kevin Connolly at Nate 'n Al, Jerry Ferrara at Pink's, Jeremy Piven at Lulu's, and most recently Adrian Grenier jogging up Runyon Canyon. On Sunday night we'll get to see where they go next.

I am a city kid. I spent most of my childhood riding the subway, slipping into movie theaters unnoticed, and scoping out the best pizza parlors. That was my idea of a great Saturday. It came to my surprise when I was taken to Runyon Canyon Park one Saturday by my parents (both out-of-town transplants, as well) for "hiking." Where I'm from, if you want nature, you go to the park in the middle...

The Golden Globes came and went, all while many, if not more, watched the second two hours of Los Angeles being terrorized in 24 on FOX. It was still brisk for the stars on the Red Carpet and the weather is expected to continue in the 60's throughout the week with the lows in the 40's. Luckily, the fire department has determined that the Red Flag will be lifted this morning. People celebrated Martin...

It's a gorgeous June day in LA, and LAist is looking for a little something something to do tonight. We're debating a few things like:

After 10 years since it's last bath, LA's most prominent landmark is getting all gussied up. It seems no one heard our pleas to tear it down. We also recently gazed at it lovingly from Runyon Canyon. We've never taken the Hollywoodland stairs but would assume you can see the sign pretty well from there as well.

Nestled just above Franklin Ave. is Hollywood’s not-so-best-kept secret: Runyon Canyon, the hiking trail to stars and regular folks alike. It’s perfect for the Hollywood hiker who doesn’t want to fight traffic to get to the Palisades.
