hello guvner Over the weekend, the California Democratic Party made Phil Angelides their choice to run for Governor against Arnie. Angelides, who is State Treasurer, appears to be a solid liberal democrat. We just wish he didn't look so much like Ben Stein.

Capitol Records doesn't want to move back into its iconic building: instead, it hopes to go condo. Not so fast! LA has been throwing money at the company to get it to stay in Hollywood and the LA Times reports that critics are displeased. Curbed LA doubts city leaders will let the lucrative sale go through. We'll never know if there are enough condo buyers who recognize that the building is meant to evoke a needle on a stack of records. (records?)

That there black goo bluging streets and seeping through manhole covers in downtown seems to be oil, indeed. Workers at a nearby oil well were flushing old lines with high-pressure water to get any last drops of oil out — and started wrecking havoc on Olive Street.

LAUSD Superinendent Roy Romer has announced a series of reforms desgined to keep students from dropping out of school, and to help the 44% percent of freshmen who fail algebra on their first try. The LA Times writes "Romer's initiatives come on the heels of a Times series about the dropout problem in Los Angeles schools." Did the paper really cause the reforms? The Daily News thinks not, citing Mayor Villaraigosa's move to take over the schools as Romer's motivator.

Once again the Los Angeles Unified School District has displayed a lousy vision for educating Los Angeles youth and managing the historic resources under their stewardship.
