Pets Of The Week: Siamese Finnegan & Rocket The Bulldog
The LAist cat of the week is Finnegan, a five year old flame point Siamese put up for adoption by his original owner who lost her home due to foreclosure. She found him as a tiny baby in front of a feed store, where someone left him in a box that was labeled "snake food.” He's lucky an animal lover found him first!
Ready for Blast Off: Largest Rocket Ever to Launch Today
The Delta IV Heavy rocket is considered the tallest and largest rocket ever, and is poised to launch early this afternoon and on schedule from the West Coast, according to ksby.com. The launch from Vandenberg Air Force Base is set for 1:08 p.m. today.
The Delta IV stands 23-stories high, and "will be carrying a top-secret spy satellite for the U.S. government capable of snapping pictures detailed enough to distinguish the make and model of an automobile hundreds of miles below," according to the LA Times.
Look to the Sky: Rocket Launch Will Likely be Visible
Just like last week, the Vandenberg Air Force Base is planning a launch tonight. This time it is anticipated to be the AtlasV rocket, which will be sent into the sky a little after 9 p.m. tonight (listen to live updates here from). There should be no noise, but the Los Angeles Fire Department said it will "likely be quite visible." They say there is no need to call 911.
California Team Wins NASA's Lunar Landing X Prize
Mojava-based Masten Space Systems yesterday won $1 million in the Northrop Grumman Lunar Lander Challenge, funded by NASA "as an incentive to spur development of technology by space entrepreneurs," according to the AP. Teams this past weekend had to fly robotic robots that would rise 160-plus feet, travel in the air for at least 180 seconds, land on a rocky landing pad and then fly back to the starting point.
The Port Of Los Angeles Lobster Festival w/ The Henry Clay People, Rocket, Robert Francis & The Monolators, 9/20 & 9/21/08
Last weekend, the 10th Annual Port of Los Angeles Lobster Festival took place in San Pedro. Last year's festival featured performances by notable local indie artists Eagle and Talon (MySpace), Great Northern (MySpace), and Bodies of Water (MySpace), and this year's lineup was no different with The Henry Clay People (MySpace), Craft Club (MySpace), Oliver Future (MySpace), Rocket (MySpace), Robert Francis (MySpace), The Weather Underground (MySpace), and The Monolators (MySpace) filling out the majority of the three-day roster.
Rocket @ The Viper Room, 1/3/08
Two weeks ago, local band Rocket (MySpace), recently profiled by The LA Times' Kevin Bronson, performed at The Viper Room in West Hollywood.
Go See Rocket at the Viper Room
Since the Mezzanine Owls got canceled tonight after we listed them in Tonight in Rock, we're adding one more band to consider -- Rocket.
Will Rocket Be The Next Great American Band?
Imagine our surprise when we discovered from the LA Times' Buzz Bands blog last week that our friends Rocket were not only on the new tv show The Next Great American Band but they had made it pretty far already. Rocket is the all-female pop rock band from East Hollywood who we first told you about during the summer of last year when they were playing shows almost every day in LA. Then this...

This Sunday in Rock in Austin - The LAist SXSW Bash
It was a toss-up for the headline of this story. I was saying it should be "Golden AX Wins the LAist Rock at SXSW Contest", but the marketing team kept saying, "Look at the poster, you drunken fool! That's not Golden AX. That's Rocket! And look at the picture on this post! Rocket! Plus you haven't told anyone that LAist is not only going to represent at the biggest film / music / Interweb...
Make LAist a Concert Poster, Win Tickets For Macy Gray Playing a Private Event at a Jazz Club
SXSW is right around the corner, in fact LAist will be there in less than a week. We are currently holding a contest to let a local band play at SXSW, and now we want to let someone local make our concert poster. Coincidentally, we also have 10 pairs of tickets to see the outrageously wonderful Macy Gray on Thursday, March 8th. But not just any old Macy Gray show (as if there was...

Tonight in Rock in LA - The Bronx, Great Northern, Rocket
The Key Club gets top billing tonight because The Bronx headlines a benefit for Wheels for Humanity, which supplies wheelchairs. Also on the bill : Chuck Ragan (ex-Hot Water Music) with members of Flogging Molly, and some rock star karaoke. Everyone will probably be there for either the ice skating or Great Northern, but The Submarines came out with a haunting CD that we played all summer long. Go downtown and ice skate from...

Remember when they were given their own studio on Hollywood Blvd. a few blocks east of the Palladium to dig into their endless banks of creativity and bring back gooey nuggets of rock? Remember how they don't have that studio any more and now they have to open for Metal Skool? We kid our local Gwarabees. The Roots @ Avalon...
