A fire last night in a Riverside home proved to be a unique challenge for firefighters because the house was "packed to the ceiling with items," according to cbs2. The fire was sparked by "an electrical problem" and was troubling for the responding crew since "the kitchen and back porch area [...] were stuffed with clutter and there was no way to get inside" and, further, "there was concern that embers had ignited hidden fires in other rooms."

Three fires continue to burn east of Los Angeles, most notably the so-called La Sierra Fire in Norco at the Riverside border. As of this morning, the fire was 90 percent contained while firefighters continued to douse hot spots throughout the 160 acre burn area. Two firefighters suffered injuries--one a burn to his face, another experienced heat exhaustion.

Earlier today, Norco officials were optimistic that the La Sierra Fire would be out by now. However, the fire is currently 50 percent contained and has burned through some 175 acres, according to numerous media reports. It began in Norco near the city of Riverside. "What we didn't see before were the driving winds," explained Bill Peters of CalFire to ABC7. "The driving winds are really what create the catoshpric fires in Southern California." Three other smaller fires--located in Riverside, Redlands and Temecula--also broke out this afternoon.

Speaking to KNX1070, Norco Fire Chief Jack Fry said that the blaze should be contained "within the hour." The fire began during the lunchtime hour and has burned an estimated 120 to 150 acres in Norco and at the edge of Riverside, he said.

As the Guiberson Fire burns, already some 300 acres, in Ventura County, another fire has prompted evacuations in the Riverside County city of Norco. Mandatory evacuations are underway in the area of Vandermolen Drive and Valley Drive, according to ABC7. The blaze, located at the border of the city of Riverside, where firefighters are trying to contain it on a hill near homes, is moving in a northward direction deeper into Norco and into Corona, according to a fire captain speaking to KNX1070. Temperatures are currently 102 degrees.

Foreclosed homes feelings oft beget strong feelings and emotions for owners, but this Riverside man took it way too far. Says the LA Times: "A U.S. Bank representative was checking the house Tuesday in the 1400 block of Orange Street when he discovered several explosives outside the structure. Officers from the Riverside Police Department arrived about 2:45 p.m. and confirmed the explosives were made to look like pipe bombs, officials said in a statement." Daniel Gherman, 42, was booked on several counts.

One boy died this morning after being struck by a Metrolink Train outside Riverside. Train 702 was traveling toward Riverside from Los Angeles when it caught up with two boys trespassing and cutting across the tracks around 7:30 a.m. The other boy survived. As of 9:20 a.m. the train was still out of service, but buses were being used to bridge riders.

He beat it with a sledgehammer, took a chainsaw to its head and fed it to his dogs. Jack Ziniuk, 64, of Anza in the 909 951 was arrested today for felony animal cruelty. “He told us he was having an argument with his neighbors and some dogs had attacked his horse but when deputies got out there they found the horse already dead,” a Riverside County Sheriff’s said to the LA Times. “He essentially admitted that he did it and that no dogs had attacked the horse.” Ziniuk has a long list of animal related violations, but each citation was never enough for officials to legally take away his animals. By the paper's count, he has at least 33 dogs, eight puppies, 10 goats, peacocks and geese, which will be taken care of by two other men that live on the property.

Two wildfires continue to burn, one in Corona near the 91 Riverside Freeway and Green River and one in Yorba Linda in the Gypsum Canyon area. It is believed that the fire jumped from its start point near Corona and ignited the brush in Yorba Linda, and may in fact have merged into one flank of fire. The fire has consumed over 800 acres, and officials are saying they believe 12 homes have been burned, although some are estimating the total between the two fires to be 16. "Two Corona firefighters were slightly injured when flames engulfed their engine," reports KFWB. Area residents remain under evacuation orders as winds continue to drive the flames through the neighborhood. The 91 Freeway is closed in both directions in the Corona area and there are reports of people stuck on the freeway in total gridlock.

Begging the question of "how much does gasoline cost in Riverside", a man was discovered carrying 125 gallons of gasoline in his van when witnesses saw vapors rising from his parked love machine.
