City Hall Rumor: LADOT Chief to Step Down

Word on the street is that Rita Robinson, who heads up the L.A. Department of Transportation -- traffic, parking enforcement, etc -- will soon step down. That's according to Streetsblog LA's Damien Newton, who has confirmed the news with anonymous sources. If true, Newton already has transit community abuzz with possible replacements. Ideas include the former Mayor of Bogota, Columbia, who brought Ciclovia, an event coming to L.A. next month, and Janette Sadik-Khan of New York City's transportation department. more ›

This is L.A.'s Transit Leader: 'I Wish We Were New York & Could Magically Make Things Happen'

This is L.A.'s Transit Leader: 'I Wish We Were New York & Could Magically Make Things Happen'

While Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa is making popular headlines for his transportation plans, his appointed head of the Department of Transportation, Rita Robinson, is not doing so well. She came in strong a few years ago, after a great success from running the Bureau of Sanitation, but what she's done with the country's biggest urban landscape of roadways is sad, to say the least. more ›

Long Beach, Hermosa Beach Install Sharrows, L.A. Lags Behind

The idea of putting sharrows on Los Angeles streets has been on the books since Council President Eric Garcetti introduced a motion in June 2008. The motion was simply for a pilot program--not even citywide--to see how they work. The original motion asked for them to be along Vermont Avenue between Hollywood Boulevard and 4th Street as well as Fountain Avenue between the 101 freeway and Hoover Street. more ›

LADOT & Downtown DASH Now on Twitter

Has the world gone topsy turvy? The city's Department of Transportation is finally using Twitter for real-time updates to their DASH service. That's a great first step as there have been many times we've waited for the Studio City/Van Nuys DASH thinking, "it'd be nice to know if it's ever coming..." You can follow the transit service here and more specifically, the downtown DASH here. Mobility Maven is the department's General Manager, Rita Robinson. more ›

Dealing with Those Pesky RVs

Dealing with Those Pesky RVs

I live on Gower, south of Sunset, and my street is always filled with homeless people living in RVs. Is there any recourse I can take to get them to leave? Are they breaking any laws?
Technically, these folks are not breaking the law... yet. And all this can change in a matter of a few months all because LADOT got a new General Manager (Rita Robinson, formerly of the City's Bureau of Sanitation). For almost 18 months, the City has had an ordinance on the books that prohibits parking of recreational vehicles over 22 feet long and 84 inches high on City streets between 2am and 6am. This ordinance was not able to implamented because the Council wanted to allow for the loading and unloading (read: parking) of such vehicles on a tempory basis by permit only. Addionally, this ordinance could only be put into effect if signage was posted indicating the new rule. All of this was supposed to be done over a year ago, but just last week, LADOT issued a report acknowledging the plan they have in place to adhere to these requirements. more ›

My failed attempt to get a crosswalk

My failed attempt to get a crosswalk

Last December, I embarked on a mission to find a solution to a problem in my immediate neighborhood. Trying to cross Moorpark St. on foot (or left turns in a car) during rush hour is a nightmare. There is just too much constant flow and you really have to have a brave moment to cross at the unmarked crosswalk because as we all know, there is about .001% of drivers in the city who... more ›

Today, they announced the 30/30 program:LADOT will install and activate 30 left turn arrows in 30 business days at some of the City’s most congested and bottlenecked intersections.... more ›

"She says the Mayor … who did the firing … did not give her an annual performance evaluation, gave her no explanation for the firing and demanded that she resign within 21 hours." A spokesman for the Mayor, Matt Szabo, countered: “Gloria Jeff received numerous indications from the mayor’s office that her management of the Department... more ›

Did the press not act fast enough on traffic issues?

Did the press not act fast enough on traffic issues?

Brady Westwater at the blog, LA Cowboy, asked some fair questions on his blog yesterday about the former head of the city’s transportation department, who was fired last week: “Why Did The Press TOTALLY Fail Us On The Gloria Jeff Disaster?” After some research, he found that “not a word was ever printed about her past” – if that’s true, Gloria Jeff is in the wrong business. Get this woman to a PR firm... more ›
