City Council Agrees Unanimously: Corporations Are Not People
Tuesday, the Los Angeles City Council voted unanimously in favor of a resolution declaring that corporations are not people, and consequently are not entitled to the same constitutional protections. The vote was taken following a discussion about money and politics in chambers during today's meeting. In the crowd were several participants of the Occupy LA movement.
City Council Votes in Support of Occupy L.A.
Persistence has paid off for Occupy L.A. protestors. The resolution in support of the movement passed unanimously today at City Hall in an 11-0 vote to formally support the campaign against Corporate America.

The Occupy L.A. resolution, which was introduced by Councilmembers Richard Alarcon and Bill Rosendahl on Wednesday, October 5, will be voted on this Wednesday, October 12. The resolution is #33 on the agenda for Wednesday's 10am meeting at L.A. City Hall.
City Council Introduces Resolution in Support of Occupy L.A.
Councilman Richard Alarcon introduced a resolution to support the protesters, and, with the seconding of several other councilmembers, the resolution will be voted on early next week. Additionally, Alarcon has asked Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa to issue an Executive Order that will allow the protesters to remain outside City Hall for the duration.
Will a Special Tax on Medical Marijuana Sales Get Your Vote?
The L.A. City Council is considering putting a special tax on medical marijuana collectives, however the voters will have the final say. Today the Council is expected to be presented with the City Attorney's recently issued report on the tax measure, and they are being recommended to adopt the resolution and have the proposition put on the March 8th, 2011 ballot.
It's Not Stopping: More Arizona Boycotts & Proclamations
This is really becoming a trend. Following in the footsteps of LAUSD, the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District Board of Education is the latest to approve a boycott of Arizona over their controversial immigration law, banning official travel and to the state and stopping any contracts with businesses based there. Meanwhile, two Riverside County and one Orange County cities have approved resolutions in support of Arizona's law. Pasadena Approves Resolution Against Arizona Immigration Law
In a 5-2 vote yesterday, Pasadena's City Council approved a resolution lending support to a call for immigration reform on a national level and to delay the implementation of Arizona's SB 1070 until the issue is handled by the courts, reports the Star-News.
L.A. Passes Arizona Ban
As expected, the Los Angeles City Council today passed a resolution limiting the city's dealings with Arizona-based businesses and opposing any federal immigration legislation that's based on racial profiling or discrimination. The move was approved by every councilmember except Greig Smith, who represents one of the most conservative parts of the city in the Northwest San Fernando Valley.

L.A. City Panel Recommends To Not Support State Parks Ballot Initiative
A resolution to support a ballot initiative that would fully fund state parks, thus protecting them from budget raids that prompt closures, failed to garner support from a L.A. City Council committee (.pdf) yesterday afternoon. At issue for Councilmembers Dennis Zine and Tony Cardenas were the fees associated with the proposal.
L.A. Likely to Back Ballot Measure to Fund State Parks
There's a good chance when voters hit the booths on Election Day next November, Californians will be asked to add an $18 vehicle license fee when they pay their annual DMV registration. If passed, the debate over funding state parks would be over, as the fee would guarantee the system of 278 parks an adequate and stable funding source to survive. As an added bonus, the initiative would end parking fees at state parks, meaning those who often take advantage of them will see a considerable amount of savings. Tomorrow, a City Council committee is poised to pass a resolution supporting the initiative, with a staff analysis recommending its approval. If passed, it will moved to the full Council and then to the Mayor.

Councilman Rosendahl to Iraq: Stop Torturing Gays
The city council has once before stepped into world affairs by denouncing the War on Iraq. Tomorrow, Councilman Bill Rosendahl will ask his fellow politicians to support a resolution to "condemn the Iraqi government for failing to stop, and call on the United States government and the mainstream, media to draw attention to, the systematic and brutal torture and murder of gay men in Iraq," according to a news brief sent out today. “This an outrage,” said Rosendahl, who is the only gay councilmember. “The annihilation of our people, ordered by religious decree in a nation where our troops have sacrificed their lives to restore religious freedom, is appalling. The Iraqi government must stop it, and the United States government must exert its leadership and pressure the Iraqi government to do so in a loud and unequivocal voice...
