Local singer-songwriter Angela Correa's band Correatown has held this month's Monday residency at The Echo, and tonight is their final show before embarking next month on a European tour. Local songstress Juliette Commagere has had the Monday night residency at The Echo, and last week, she was joined by Ceci Bastida, Commagere's brother Robert Francis, and Fresno-based Rademacher.

       

LAist first met Long Beach/Los Alamitos-natives Avi Buffalo last March at an LA-Underground-presented showcase that included local rising stars The Sweet Hurt, Ema and the Ghosts, Amnion, and Cobra Lilies.

              

Last Wednesday, San Diego-based Tristan Prettyman (MySpace) and local Jesca Hoop (MySpace) anchored a solid night of female singer-songwriters at Hotel Cafe (MySpace) in Hollywood that included openers Lucy Schwartz (MySpace) and Annie Bethancourt (MySpace).

Born the son of a professional guitarist who played with Bo Diddley, Rocco Deluca had blues in his soul since he was a boy. Inspired by the classic Delta bluesmen, Muddy Waters, Son House, and Robert Johnson, Rocco Deluca has created a blues/rock sound that pays homage to these late greats. The kind of blues that make you want to rip off your shirt and howl.

                     

Earlier this month, local singer-songwriter Gary Jules concluded his "Old School Tuesdays" residency at the Hotel Cafe (MySpace) in Hollywood, supported by openers Simone White (MySpace), Oren Lavie (MySpace), and Jim Bianco (MySpace). At first a space for jazz musicians, the Hotel Cafe was revitalized as an alternative to Largo -- for early-adopters Jules, Bianco, and Joshua Radin (MySpace) -- a fact that hasn't been lost on Jules, who reminsinced during his set about those early days.

                      

Last Monday, local indie band The Movies (MySpace) continued their month-long residency at Spaceland (MySpace) in Silver Lake, with support from Sarah Negahdari and The Sad Solids (the acoustic version of The Happy Hollows), Rademacher (MySpace), and Vibe Slayer (MySpace). It was also a release party for The Movies' new album , and what a party it was.

For the next three Thursdays in a row, local psychadelic indie powerpop outfit West Indian Girl is headlining at Spaceland in Silver Lake. The first show (tonight) will draw exclusively from their critically-acclaimed eponymous 2004 debut, featuring hits like What Are You Afraid Of, Hollywood, Miles From Monterey, and Still Lost. Their Nov. 13 set will pull from their 2007 sophomore effort, 4th & Wall, with popular songs To Die In LA, Blue Wave, Sofia and the enthusiastic Get Up. Their Spaceland residency will end on Nov. 20 with a set full of brand-new tunes they're considering for their forthcoming (still-untitled) third album, which is expected to hit stores sometime in 2009.

                      

On Halloween, New York-based shoegazers Asobi Seksu (MySpace), whose previous Southern California appearance was two years ago at The Echo (MySpace), returned there to complete the final stop on their current domestic tour, performing songs from their existing repertoire and the new album that is tentatively scheduled to street in February. The show was a homecoming for frontwoman Yuki Chikudate, as she grew up in Gardena and her relatives were in the audience.

        

Last night, local ethereal shoegazers Warpaint (MySpace) closed the evening's lineup at the Hotel Cafe (MySpace) in Hollywood. Formed in March 2007 with actress Shannyn Sossamon as drummer, the once all-female band has had two residencies this year -- February March at the Silverlake Lounge and August at Spaceland (MySpace) in Silver Lake -- as well as a spot on last month's Clean Air Clear Stars Festival (MySpace) at Pappy and Harriet's Pioneertown Palace (MySpace).

                      

On Saturday, locals The Monolators (MySpace) -- covered previously here -- celebrated the release of their new album at Spaceland (MySpace) in Silver Lake, along with Correatown (MySpace), You, Me, and Iowa (MySpace), and Summer Darling (MySpace).

In a court case that's so pedestrian other than the defendant (and even that could be disputed), it's big news. The Britney Spears driving without a valid license case has finally come to a close, days after the the jury tried, but failed, to agree on a verdict.

                     

Last Thursday, Australian singer Lenka (MySpace) performed the second night of her month-long residency at the Hotel Cafe in Hollywood, backed by openers Emy Reynolds (MySpace) and New Orleans-based Theresa Andersson (MySpace), and locals Caitlin Crosby (MySpace) and The Ventriloquists (MySpace) completing the evening's lineup.

Don’t be fooled. Just because, Dios(Malos) formerly Dios, soon to be We Are Dios, change their name more often than Prince, it doesn’t mean they are flaky about this music stuff. These guys are in it for the long-haul, calling themselves “lifers.” Veterans as it were of the Los Angeles music scene which is as beautiful, quick burning, and potentially dangerous as a homemade bottle rocket.

Last Sunday, local Alex Lilly's solo project Obi Best (MySpace), formerly known as Colorforms (MySpace), performed the first show of her month-long residency, celebrating the release of her debut album , at Tangier in Los Feliz.

                                   

Last month, local band The Airborne Toxic Event (MySpace) returned to Spaceland (MySpace) in Silver Lake to headline a show that included The Deadly Syndrome (MySpace), and The Henry Clay People (MySpace) with support from I Make This Sound (MySpace) and Le Switch (MySpace). As aptly described by Mouse from Classical Geek Theatre, "Before a mixed-crowd of longtime fans and recent, true-believing converts, The Airborne Toxic Event rewarded ticket holders with a near flawless-set that could have just as easily been played at The Hollywood Bowl, The Kodak Theatre, or Coachella. There was no melodrama, very little hype, and nobody on stage had to prove anything. It was just the band and their songs; naked, raw, hard-boiled."
