Sorry, Trojans. Your team has been stripped of its 2004 Bowl Championship Series title. The announcement came today, according to the Daily News. The 2004 season will simply have no champion. The decision by BCS officials is not likely a surprise to the University of Southern California or their fans, as the team knew they were in jeopardy of having the title yanked after being "hit with heavy NCAA sanctions last year for rules violations committed during the 2004 and '05 seasons."
BCS 1, USC 0: Trojans Stripped of 2004 Title
Leave Cam Alone!
This smear campaign against Auburn quarterback Cam Newton has got to stop. Doing my best imitation of Chris Crocker, Leave Cam Alone!
Reggie Bush Forfeits Heisman
A week after saying the status of his Heisman Trophy was out of his hands, the Associated Press reported that former USC tailback Reggie Bush will be giving back the honors awarded to him after his 2005 college football campaign. In a statement released by Bush's current team New Orleans Saints:
LAst Night's Action: Dodgers, Angels Offense Continue to Mold
San Diego Padres defeat LA Dodgers 2-1. An Aaron Cunningham sacrifice fly in the second inning and an Adrian Gonzalez RBI double in the third marred Clayton Kershaw’s (L, 11-10) outing against the Padres. Padres’ starter Mat Latos (W, 14-5), a day after being scratched from a start against the Dodgers with flu-like symptoms, mowed through the Dodger lineup striking out 10 tying a career-high. Scott Podsednik finally sparked the offense in the sixth inning with a two-out double coming home on Rafael Furcal’s single. The Dodgers had a rally going in the eighth inning thanks to a leadoff double by pinch hitter Jamey Carroll off of reliever Mike Adams, but after Adams got pinch hitter Jay Gibbons to fly out closer Heath Bell (S, 39) came in and struck out Podsednik, walked Furcal and struck out James Loney to end the threat. By the way Kershaw had his second one-two-three first inning of the season, and the Dodgers fall under .500 for the first time since April 29.
Reggie Bush Releases Statement
Current New Orleans Saints and former USC running back Reggie Bush released a statement regarding the NCAA sanctions on USC: "I have a great love for the University of Southern California and I very much regret the turn that this matter has taken, not only for USC, but for the fans and players.
I am disappointed by [Thursday's] decision and disagree with the NCAA's findings..."
USC Football Reported to Face Two Year Bowl Ban and Other Sanctions
The ruling hand of the NCAA has come down and USC has been smote.
All reports point to the football program having a two-year bowl ban and a reduction of 20 scholarships thanks to the improper benefits to Reggie Bush’s mom, brother and stepfather who lived in a San Diego area home that was owned by a potential marketer who planned on representing Bush when he turned pro.
Colts, Saints Push on To Super Bowl XLIV
Before the game I gave out my predictions for today’s Championship Games on Twitter: Jets to defeat Colts; Saints to defeat Vikings. Of course given my playoff picks the last several weeks, it would only follow that the Colts and Vikings won. Well the Colts did manage to hold off the Jets in convincing 30-17 fashion while the Saints barely squeaked past the Vikings 31-28 in overtime making me 1-1 in my picks for the weekend.
Bush Probed By NCAA, USC Sanctions Soon? [Updated]
Yahoo! Sports writers Jason Cole and Charles Robinson are reporting that former USC Trojans running back Reggie Bush met with NCAA investigators prior to the 2009 NFL season after investigators spent more than three years trying to get him to talk. As expected he denied that he and his family took $300,000 worth of extra benefits while he was playing for the Trojans in 2004 and 2005.
Sports Whimper In the New Year
Things this weekend was just downright ugly. With NFL teams playing half-assed, USC’s self-flagellation and Pau Gasol going down with another hamstring injury for the Lakers, this weekend was just one long comedown from the high of the New Year.
Those NFL games were perhaps the most unwatchable exhibitions seen in a long time. While some teams simply rested their starters after the first quarter, other teams fearing fan and media backlash experienced by the Colts last week left their starters in but used the most vanilla plays in their playbooks. Look at these scores:
LAst Night's Action: Suns Blaze Lakers
Phoenix Suns defeat LA Lakers 118-103. Bad defense and bad shooting lost the game for the Lakers. While the Lakers overpowered the Suns in both games at the Staples Center earlier this season, the Suns defended the paint giving the Lakers’ bigs problems all night. The Suns torched the Lakers in the second half leading by as much as 22 points. While Kobe Bryant led all scorers with 34 points, Amare Stoudemire led the Suns with 26 points and six boards. The bench war was won by the Suns outscoring the Lakers’ subs 52-31. While this is the Lakers third straight mediocre game, it’s still a bit too early to panic and throw foam fingers onto the hardwood.
10 Reasons Why I Hate College Football
Today marks the first Saturday of the college football season. Millions across the country; especially here in the home of the #4 ranked USC Trojans and the recipient of seven votes in the AP Top 25 - UCLA Bruins, are excited to get the 2009 campaign kicked off. I, on the other hand, could couldn't care less.
ESPN Zone's Red Carpet Grand Opening Starring Pete Carroll
Just hours after saying goodbye to his quaterback, Mark Sanchez, USC football head coach Pete Carroll walked the red carpet at the grand opening of ESPN Zone at LA Live. ESPN Zone was already open, in fact, that night the place was packed with Kings and Red Wings fans grabbing a bite prior to the game, but that's what they call a "soft opening." Thursday night was the grand opening with the red carpet, bright lights and celebrities.
Tonight HBO's Real Sports Investigates Reggie Bush Controversy
Tonight's episode of HBO's "Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel," will investigate the Reggie Bush controversy. This segment will include an interview with Lloyd Lake, the man who claims to have given Bush $291,600 in cash, living arrangements and other benefits while he was playing at USC.
LAst Night's Action: Lakers Sting Hornets
Lakers 109, Hornets 80 - Two of the hottest teams in the NBA met in New Orleans, but only one of them lived up to the billing. Los Angeles thumped the Hornets despite playing on back-to-back nights and New Orleans having several days of rest. Maybe they just got cold. The Lakers bench was key, outscoring the Hornet's reserves by 42-9. It was like the reverse of a USC game.
LAst Night's Action: Big Game vs. Buffalo
Kings 8, Sabres 2 - Halfway through, it looked suspiciously like an SEC football score. Los Angeles was up 7-0 midway through the second period and coasted the rest of the way, making life easy on goalie Jonathan Quick. Due to injuries, Quick was making his first appearance in the NHL. For those keeping score at home, the Kings have tried more goalies this season than they had goals against the Sabres. Only in LA...
LAst Night's Action: Not So Happy Halloween
Perspective - The question around town is clear ... "Who's going to upstage everybody next?" Tuesday night should have been about the Laker's season opener. Or was it about Kobe possibly leaving the team? Nope, the Dodgers stole the headlines when manager Grady Little resigned. Could Joe Torre and Alex Rodriguez be reunited in Blue? Or could A-Rod go to LAnaheim? Curt Schilling has expressed interest in both teams. If baseball isn't providing the big...
LAst Night's Action: Plan Your Dodger Sleepover
Angels 7, A's 6 - Francisco Rodriguez blew a save opportunity despite a three run lead. Fortunately, he was saved by Maicer Izturis' RBI single with two out in the bottom of the ninth. Vladimir Guerrero took the day off and while the Halos generated plenty of offense without him, none of the 15 hits left the park. The team's recent home run slump coincides with Vlad's, who hasn't gone yard in 24 games despite...
LA's Newest Odd Couple
After bringing you the coolest Nike ad that you probably will never see here in the States, we thought we'd balance it out with Adidas' brand new "Futbol meets Football" campaign. This one couldn't be any more LA as past local superstar meets future local superstar. Notice that David Beckham speaks Spanish (the video was shot in Madrid), so we know he's going to fit in here just fine. Reggie Bush looked a little...
LAst Night's Action: Plenty For Mom To Talk About
Dodgers 10, Reds 5 - All nine Dodger starters had at least one hit or run scored, giving the team moms something to be proud of. Cincinnati's Ken Griffey, Jr. didn't disappoint, either, going deep on Mother's Day for the sixth time in his career. Ducks 4, Red Wings 3, OT - The Ducks evened the Western Conference Finals against Detroit at a game each and claimed home ice advantage heading into the next two...
I'll Take Procrastination for $100,000
Yes, that's Alex Trebek. No, he hasn't lost it. The Jeopardy! College Championships are going down at the University of Southern California and it looks like he's feeling the Spirit of Troy. College students could always use some extra cash, so one smart-Alex is going to walk away with $100,000 to pay for books and Ramen a new plasma TV and Trump steaks. A potpourri of California schools have been represented on the program this...
Is It Drafty In Here?
Even though Los Angeles doesn't have an NFL team, that doesn't mean this weekend's draft was irrelevant. Unless, of course, you're Mr. Irrelevant, but we'll get to that in a moment. Unlike most major cities in this country, LA is the only one that suffers a net loss of talent whenever the draft happens. The closest team is the San Diego Chargers, who didn't exactly have exciting picks. Choosing LSU wideout Craig Davis over USC's...

LAst Night's Action: At Least The Angels Won
Brewers 4, Dodgers 3 - The bums are playing like it. But they can still go 160-2, right? We'll find out on Wednesday when ace Jason Schmidt takes the mound. Angels 8, Rangers 3 - Anaheim is off to a great start, and guess what? The bullpen didn't allow a run in 3 and 2/3 innings. Sammy Sosa was held to 1 for 4. Nuggest 111, Lakers 105 - Denver just took away some breathing...
Is OJ the Next Reggie Bush?
Reggie Bush was the most exciting athlete LA has ever seen. In the end, he was also a fair amount of trouble for USC and some have questioned if he's a "class act." Enter OJ Mayo. Many consider this kid the brightest star in high school basketball. He's flashy and exciting, but he's been getting in a lot of trouble. This is a video from his final high school game -- a blowout victory...
Monday Night Head Trauma
What happens when you're skateboarding, hit by a car, severely injured and undergo four brain surgeries? In the case of dancer Kim Hagen, tonight a bunch of artists and musicians throw a benefit to help pay off nearly a million dollars in medical bills. If your you, ten bucks gets eight hours of live music, DJ's, and registered for some nice door prizes (like wine tastings, gift certificates and a good bottle of tequila.)...
LAst Night's Action: Ducks Try To Take Local Crown
Ducks 3, Kings 2, SO - With both local teams struggling lately, Los Angeles and Anaheim opened a weekend home-and-home series at Staples Center. The Kings tied it up with about five minutes to play, and neither team could score in overtime. The Ducks, with one of the best records in hockey, skated away with a shootout win over the Kings, with one of the worst. The scrappy rivalry featured 56 penalty minutes issued in...
LAst Night's Action: No Love for LA
Knicks 107, Lakers 106 - With time running out, the Lakers employed a brand new strategy against New York. Unofficially dubbed the "Let's not pass it to Kobe" play, Lamar Odom fired up an air ball as the clock ran out. So much for that idea. 7.1 seconds earlier, Eddy Curry slammed home the go-ahead dunk and propelled the Knicks to their 23rd win of the year -- matching last year's total with 30 games...
Trojan Telephony?
For as long as Pete Carroll's been head coach, the USC Trojans have consistently attracted the top high school football recruits. But Leinart and Jarrett shared a castle, Bush got his God-knows-what, and now this:Southern California is looking into whether it may have violated NCAA recruiting rules while pursuing highly rated recruit Joe McKnight, a university official said. McKnight signed a national letter of intent with USC on Wednesday and made comments during a...
LAst Night's Action: The ED! Edition
Ducks 4, Stars 1 - After taking more than a week off, the Ducks returned to the ice looking HEALED! Three key players were back after suffering from injuries before the All Star break. The fresh bodies helped Anaheim recover from their recent skid and play more like their impressive season start. Spurs 96, Lakers 94, OT - The Lakers led most of the game, but not when it counted the most. Tied at 80...
