Halos Suffer from Premature Evacuation

Halos Suffer from Premature Evacuation

The Angels have been dating a mysterious figure known as World Champion off and on over the last 5 years or so. It hasn't reached the serious level yet, but they've flirted with the possibility of going all the way. There's always been competition, because quite honestly, World Champion is a slut. She's always willing to go with whoever is offering the most bang at the time. This year she's had her eye on Ray from Tampa. He pulled a Ronald Miller and went from totally geek to totally chic this season. They even went out and bought her expensive gifts, like a new center fielder and first baseman. more ›

Napoli-on Dynamite, Angels Not Dead Yet

Napoli-on Dynamite, Angels Not Dead Yet

The average labor length for a third child is about 5 hours. That's how long it took the Angels to squeeze out a win in Game 3 of the ALDS last night in Boston. It was their first postseason win against the Red Sox in 11 straight attempts. The Halos avoid the sweep and now trail in the series 2-1. more ›

Fallen Angels on the Brink of Elimination

Fallen Angels on the Brink of Elimination

It was my understanding that the team that wins a division is also supposed to be the same team that reports to work during the playoffs, not its evil and less talented twin (no offense to Minnesota). The Angels came into Friday night's game down 1-0 and in need of a win before hopping a plane out to Beantown for Sunday's possible series ending game. With the best record in the regular season behind them and $124 million on the field in red and white, a win at home was crucial. Unfortunately for Angels fans, we've witnessed the film version of a long running and critically acclaimed TV show these last two games, The Simpsons Movie of baseball, if you will. more ›

Angels Need a Little Hell Fire

Angels Need a Little Hell Fire

It’s not that the Angels lacked offense in Game 1 Wednesday night in Anaheim, but like me at the end of every high school dance, they just couldn’t score. The Halos had 9 hits to Boston’s 8. However, their traditional small ball way of playing the game is not going to work against these guys…again. Hey, that’s why they went out and bagged Texiera from the Braves so they wouldn’t find themselves down a game, played at home, after finishing the season with the best record in baseball. But that was then, and this is October. Maybe someone should tell Vladimir Guerrero. more ›

What are the Odds of a 'Freeway' World Series?

What are the Odds of a 'Freeway' World Series?

Could it actually happen? A spokesman for BetOnline.com e-mailed over saying he has calculated the odds: "With the Dodgers two wins away from a trip to the NLCS, and the Angels in a 1-0 hole... [the] odds on a possible Dodgers-Angels 'Freeway' World Series," are 7-to-1, he explained. "Not to be left out, a Cubs-White Sox 'Red Line' World Series is currently at 9-to-1." If that happens, can Mayor V and the Anaheim Mayor make a bet? If the Dodgers win, Anaheim can't use "Los Angeles" in their team name anymore. The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. pfffft. more ›

Beautiful Place for a Ballgame

When the Dodgers host the Boston Red Sox on Saturday, the game could break baseball's all-time attendance record with almost 115,000 fans cramming into the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. A lot of people are excited about the exhibition, but it's not without detractors. Congestion and dimensions are two of the biggest fears. After going on a tour of the setup this morning, I don't think you could ask for more out of this historic location. File those concerns under "be advised" but not under "big deal." more ›

LAst Night's Action: Kaboom Goes the Kobe

Lakers 108, Mavs 104, OT - The Laker's season just keeps getting sweeter. This time, it was all Kobe Bryant -- who managed to score even when triple-teamed. End result? 52 points, including 22 in the 4th quarter and 8 in OT. It was the first game between the refurbished Laker's (Pau Gasol had 17 points and 14 rebounds) and the refurbished Mavs (Jason Kidd had 15 points and 11 assists). more ›

Breaking News: Baseball is Full of Effing Cheaters

Former Senate Majority Leader (and current Boston Red Sox director) George Mitchell just announced the results of his 20-month, $20 million investigation into allegations of widespread steroid usage in baseball. The long-awaited, 409-page Mitchell Report (document here) identifies more than 80 current and former players as being linked to using performance-enhancing drugs. While the report casts blame on the lack of institutional control within baseball as much as the players themselves that cheated, what everyone cares about are the names. more ›

Feds Order Cops to Return Pot to Owner, 2 1/2 Years Later

While you were sleeping: There's nothing wrong with the ganj in California, as long as you've got a scrip to use. So decided the 4th District Court of Appeals in the case of a 22-year-old who had a quarter of weed confiscated in a traffic stop by LAPD, despite having a prescription for marijuana as treatment for severe back pain. Now, how exactly will LAPD go about "returning" weed to rightful owner 2.5 years... more ›

Week Around the -Ists

In Los Angeles, LAist most definitely celebrated Thanksgiving like no other. After all, one has to keep up all the energy to keep on walking the line at the Writers Strike and fighting the unfortunate return of the wildfires in Malibu, which single handedly destroyed over fifty homes within the first 24 hours. National outlets may be covering the fires, but CNN also found it is easier to buy a gun than fruit and veggies in South Central. On the entertainment front, the Red Hot Chili Peppers are suing Showtime over the show titled Californication and Rami Kashou of Project Runway chatted with LAist about his Palestinian heritage and, of course, designing beauty. more ›

What's Up Dodgers?

What's Up Dodgers?

So what has been going on in Dodger land since I last posted? Well a big hearty congrats go to Russell Martin for winning the Silver Slugger Award for National League catchers. Voted by coaches and managers, Martin led the NL catchers in hits, homers, runs, stolen bases, batting average, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage. Only Mike Piazza (from 1993-1998) was the other Dodger catcher to win the award since its inception in 1980.... more ›

LAst Night's Action: We're Talking Baseball

But first - Kobe vetoed a trade! Baseball in the Coliseum - Just after it was announced that the Red Sox will open the exhibition season against Oakland in Japan, the Dodgers confirmed that the defending World Champs would play three games against the Blue Crew. The cool part? One of the games will be in the Coliseum as part of the Dodger's 50th anniversary in Los Angeles. Yes, it can be configured that way... more ›

They also got on a runaway train without an operator provoking a response from the transport authorities. Elsewhere, London's answer to Central Station is about to open for business, and Londonist got a sneak preview. Meanwhile, spooky goings-on beneath London Bridge, where a cache of skeletons provided an apt story for Hallowe'en.

Vegoose Music Festival, Las Vegas, 10/27-10/28, Pt. 2

By now you've probably heard that this year's Vegoose was a smashing success. Pretty much everything about the show was great; plenty of booze, food, facilities, and the availability of televised sports (for the adamant college football/NFL/World Series fans willing to miss their favorite bands to catch the score.) The crowd seemed highly content throughout the whole show, save for a few rumbles between Red Sox and Rockies fans. Lucky for us, LAist got about 5 minutes to talk to Troy from Queens of the Stone Age, so check out the interview and a few vids after the jump. more ›

Week Around the -Ists

Week Around the -Ists

The Red Sox has permeated nearly every facet of Bostonist's lives. When they're not live-blogging the games, waxing poetic about the games, thanking Curt Schilling for his splendid work, or telling Dane Cook to watch his hair, they're watching certain presidential candidates hop on the Red Sox bandwagon (sorry, Gothamist). The Sox are so branded on the local brain that people are using the Series to spice up their sex lives. Speaking of spice, Bostonist is really sick of that taco promo. And, while they're proud of John Williams, Bostonist is still trying to figure out Williams' "Very Special Arrangement" of the "Star Spangled Banner." more ›

LAst Night's Action: Ducks Face Plant Again

Coyotes 1, Ducks 0 - The Duck's road problems have come home to roost. They were held scoreless against lowly Phoenix in Anaheim last night and couldn't convert on six power plays. Four players -- Ryan Getzlaf, Rob Niedermayer, Mathieu Schneider and Todd Bertuzzi -- missed the game due to injury. The only thing hotter than the Southern Californian fires on the web today is a company in Irvine, who, unfortunately, are being recognized today for something that they probably don't want. Red Sox Nation Celebrates!!

The Boston Red Sox, after coming back from a (reminiscent) 3-1 series deficit, last night beat the Cleveland Indians 11-2 to win the AL Championship Series and secure a spot in the World Series for the second time in four years. The Red Sox held a close 3-2 lead until the seventh inning, when Dustin Pedroia hit a 2-run homer to bring their lead to 5-2. Six runs in the eighth inning clinched the... more ›
