Police Recover 23 Bicycles, 16 Strollers & More in the South Bay

A man and a woman were arrested Wednesday after the Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach police departments conducted a probation search at a residence in the L.A. neighborhood of Westchester, finding several stolen items. Bicycle theft was on the rise last fall in the South Bay and this was one reason why. Anthony Michael Taraszka, 33, and Michelle Renee Thomspon, 31, who were both arrested in 2004 for stealing 50 bicycles, were apparently stealing bicycles, strollers and motorized scooters to support their drug habit by selling parts on eBay. In all, 23 bicycles and 16 high-end strollers were found. Both were charged with multiple counts of possession of stolen property and identity theft. more ›

A Redondo Beach police officer who pleaded guilty to one count of grand theft by embezzlement last month was sentenced today to three months in county jail, following be three years of probation and one year of gamblers anonymous. 40-year-old Gene Tomatani embezzled $72,388.56 from the Redondo Beach Police Officer’s Association when in capacity as the organization's president and treasurer over a four year period beginning in May of 2004. He also embezzled $3,000 from the city of Redondo Beach. more ›

Prosecutors Have Yet to File a Case Against Mother of Trash Bin Baby

24-year-old Jessie Lauren Canfield says she didn't know she was pregnant before she delivered a baby girl in a bedroom during a house party in Redondo Beach last weekend. But the District Attorney has not yet filed a case against Canfield, citing a need for further investigation into the events leading up to the baby being left either dead or to die in a trash receptacle, according to the Daily News. It is precisely the baby's death that kept the DA's office from filing charges on Friday as perhaps anticipated; Deputy District Attorney Christi Frey noted in a report "[the] coroner's office has not yet determined cause of death and has not yet ruled the death a homicide." It will take 2-3 weeks for the cause of death to be determined, during which time investigators can continue to look into the bizarre details of the baby's birth and Canfield's actions. more ›

The 24-year-old woman who allegedly put her newborn daughter into a Redondo Beach trash can says she didn't know she was pregnant until she arrived at a house party when she began to have cramps and had a baby in one of the bedrooms, according to the Daily News. Nice Idea: Mosaic Installed on Redondo Beach Staircase

For $1,000, two artists, with the help of 50 volunteers, were able to install this mosaic public art piece in Redondo Beach. Found by the pier, the staircase links condominiums to a bikeway above the International Boardwalk, says the Daily Breeze. The artists are Patti Linnett and Debbie Collette, both based in Redondo. It's a great touch to the community and a nice creative way to beautify an area. Reminds us of the pubilc art recently put up on a staircase in Franklin Hills. President Bush Pardons Redondo Beach Man

A 78-year-old sailor's court martial from 1950 for two unauthorized absences and missing a ship's movement was pardoned by President Bush yesterday. The pardon should should clear his record, but just in case the near octogenarian wants to, he won't be able to rejoin the military, a naval lieutenant commander told the Daily Breeze. Robert Truman Reece, who lives in a Redondo Beach condo overlooking the ocean, is one of the 20 people that Bush pardoned on Tuesday. He's granted 191 pardons since entering office in 2000. more ›
