Tonight In Rock: Ray LaMontagne, Oneida, Loch Lomond, The Summer Cats

Tonight Portland-based pop folk sextet Loch Lomond will be performing at Spaceland with Oakland's own garage rock outfit the Heavenly States in tow. Early in the afternoon, Brooklyn-based psych rock outfit Oneida will be performing at the Echo. And, lastly, Melbourne-based twee-pop act the Summer Cats will be performing at the Echo late in the evening for this week's edition of Part Time Punks. But we strongly suggest doing whatever it takes to get into the Hollywood Bowl to catch Maine-based folk troubadour Ray LaMontagne. Local ruddy-haired songstress Jenny Lewis (LAist Review, #2, #3, #4) and LAist favorites Blitzen Trapper (LAist Interview) are slated to kick things off.

Week In Rock: Ray LaMontagne, Andrew Bird, Dirty Projectors, Everest

This week Maine-based folk troubadour Ray LaMontagne will be performing with local ruddy-haired songstress Jenny Lewis (LAist Review, #2, #3, #4) and LAist favorites Blitzen Trapper (LAist Interview) in tow. Chicago-based multi-instrumentalist Andrew Bird (LAist Review) is poised to headline the Greek Theatre with Syracuse-bred indie rockers Ra Ra Riot and yet another LAist favorite, Cincinnati's own garage rock outfit Heartless Bastards. Local alt-rockers Everest (LAist review, #2) will be performing with Red Cortez (LAist Review, #2) at UCLA's Hammer Museum for this week's edition of Also I Like To Rock. And, lastly, Brooklyn's crown jewel, the erratic experimental indie rock collective known as Dirty Projectors (LAist Review), will be gracing the Troubadour.

Tonight LA will be taken over by folk-driven rock. As you very well know, we already doled out the opportunity to witness the Experience Hendrix concert at the Greek Theatre. But Maine-based singer-songwriter Ray Lamontagne will be concluding a two-night stint at the Wiltern. And we never thought we'd find ourselves saying this, but Portland's own folk troubadour Adrian Orange, or rather Thanksgiving, will be performing at Echo Curio with experimental rockers White Fang. Also, our favorite children's show host Lance Rock will be taking over Amoeba Records on Sunset for a Yo Gabba Gabba! session of sorts. However, we suggest catching Whispertown 2000 (LAist Review, #2), who will be playing an early show at the Echo with another Rilo Kiley-related act, the Elected bassist Michael Runion.

Tonight we're really bummed. Neil Young canceled on us over a pretty murky labor dispute. And with LA's own alt-rockers Everest and indie rock mainstays Death Cab For Cutie opening, it was shaping up to be one of the most memorable shows of the year. We've officially put the Forum on the blacklist, twice over. Alas, English psych-pop rocker Pop Levi will be gracing the Echo. Ray Lamontagne will be performing new songs from 2008's Gossip In The Grain at the Wiltern with NY-based singer-songwriter Leona Naess (LAist Interview) opening. NY-based rock trio the Secret Machines will be playing at the Key Club with Montreal-based indie rockers the Dears. And, lastly, the ruddy-haired Jenny Lewis will be checking into the Orpheum in Downtown with the Beachwood Sparks. But, in light of recent developments, we suggest heading over to the Troubadour to catch Fujiya & Miyagi. The Brighton-based quartet will be laying down funky grooves from 2008's Lightbulbs.

In one respect, Leona Naess’ current album, Thirteens, could be described in numbers. She spent four years crafting 13 album’s worth of songs from which she carefully selected 11 for her fourth album. But Thirteens could also be described in terms of raw emotion. For Naess, music became an outlet through which she could channel her grief after the tragic death of her father in 2004.

Earlier today we got Nic Harcourt's Top 10 albums of 2007. Some of our more snarky commentors were put off that some of Nic's picks included artists who were signed to omg major labels. So as we continue this week to spotlight KCRW dj's favorite cds of 2007, we shift gears to the more exotic world of Tom Schnabel whose picks are a tad more off the beaten path which is probably something to...

The remaining 10 guys performed on American Idol last night, and thankfully, it wasn't two hours of excruciating torture like last week. First, it was only a 90-minute show to make room for Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader. (Hence, the shameless Jeff Foxworthy shots in the AI audience. He hosts the show, so you know it's gonna be redneck good.) And while the guys greatly improved from their first outing, they still...

Compton gangsta rap is #1, sweet girl harp is #2. We can't wait for that mash-up.
