We're not trying to discount the severity of the accident by making note of it in opposition to our usual -Ist lightheartedness - we just wanted to take a moment and recognize those affected last week.

What with Paris Hilton's release earlier this week and the upcoming celebration of American Independence (sorry, Londonist!), we've been thinking a lot about freedom. Freedom to vote, freedom to choose, and most importantly, freedom to blog. Here are a few things we're happy we've been free to blog about this week.
Back during the most heated moments of the Shaq vs. Kobe war that (probably) lead to the dismantling of the championship Lakers, I had an equally combative debate with a co-worker about which of the two players should get the heave-ho. My co-worker, a lifelong Lakers fan, said there was no way Kobe, the best player in the NBA and in the prime of his youth, should be traded instead of the frequently overweight...
- It's always nice to go to Lahaina, but it's better to come back with some hardware. UCLA did just that as they won the EA Sports Maui Invitational by easily rolling past #19 Georgia Tech 88-73. Arron Afflalo had 19 points in the win, but sophomore Darren Collison was named the tournament MVP. This is a well-deserved award for Simmons who went from nowhere to solid scorer seemingly overnight. But, as everyone will remind you, Simmons is a free agent now and the NBA awaits to find out if Donald Sterling will pay up. Our advice to Sterling: Wait.
The Kobe-haters of LA were desperately hoping Bryant's recent absence coupled with a 3-game win streak would in some convoluted world make the Lakers trade him.
"If Kobe doesn't see he needs two and a half good players to be a legitimate playoff contender or win a championship in about a year or two he'll be calling out to Jerry Buss that 'We need some help in here,' or 'Trade me,' " Allen said earlier this month. "And we'll all be saying, 'I told you so,' when he says that."
