L.A. Left Off Top City List

L.A. Left Off Top City List

Investment firm Mercer yesterday released its annual list of international cities that top the quality of living rankings and Los Angeles was not included. In fact, out of 50 cities, the highest ranking U.S. one was Honolulu at #31. San Francisco came in at #32, New York at #49. That's some tough competition. As for their eco-city list, L.A. didn't make it either. Honolulu came in a #2, Minneapolis at #6 and Pittsburgh at #13, to name a few. Does this mean L.A. is a bad city? No, but there's lots of room for improvement. more ›

We're Not Crazy Enough: L.A. Ranks 28 Out of 57 in 'America's Craziest Cities' Study

We're Not Crazy Enough: L.A. Ranks 28 Out of 57 in 'America's Craziest Cities' Study

Is Cincinnati truly the craziest U.S. city, as told by the Daily Beast's latest ranking of major metropolitan cities. We understand San Francisco earning the number two spot, but Providence at number three? Ranking was based on four criteria--psychiatrists per capita, stress, eccentricity, and drinking--leaving Los Angeles half way there to be fully crazy. more ›

LAist-CS: Pac-10 Here to Save the Day

Every college football fan in the Best Coast in America has heard the same thing over and over again: the Pac-10 is not real football. During the baseball season, Orlando Hudson and Juan Pierre echoed that sentiment very loudly one Saturday in the Dodger clubhouse during an LSU-Georgia game. more ›

LAist-CS: Pac-10 Up in the Air

Yesterday Ohio State printed their ticket to the Rose Bowl with their 27-24 win in overtime over Iowa, but who will they be facing? That is a question that no one has had to ask in the last four years. more ›

Welcome to Schadenfreude Saturday

Welcome to Schadenfreude Saturday

As Adam Rose pointed out on his twitter it was schadenfreude yesterday with losing being the cool thing to do. Losses by Iowa, Notre Dame, Oregon, Michigan, Penn State and LSU made it almost seem trendy. By looking at the rankings it’s easy to think college football is having a down year, but the rankings are only part of the story. There have been great games all weekend long with teams looking evenly matched. Whether that’s due to parity or mediocrity does not diminish the excitement. more ›

LAist-CS: Ducks Sit on Trojans' Face

LAist-CS: Ducks Sit on Trojans' Face

Let me channel my inner Vic the Brick. "Trojan fans! One word: UY!" In a Saturday where all of the excitement was contained to the margins (Southern Miss-Houston; Miami (FL)-Wake Forest; Cal-Arizona State; Rutgers-UConn), all eyes were on USC and Oregon. And in the spotlight, the Trojan defense withered. more ›

Travel + Leisure to LA: "You're Dumb, Ugly & Rude but You've Got Nice Shops"

Travel + Leisure to LA: "You're Dumb, Ugly & Rude but You've Got Nice Shops"

Travel + Leisure's November 2007 issue features a fun little ditty called America's Favorite Cities. They've asked people from all over the country to rate 25 well-known cities on everything from culture and nightlife to public transportation and weather. We're not quite sure who these 60,000 respondents think they are, but they don't have anything nice to say about our fair city. Oh, except for the fact that we have nice shops. Los Angeles... more ›

Washington Monthly's College Rankings: California Love!

Washington Monthly's College Rankings: California Love!

While the Great UCLA Versus USC Debate may never reach a resolution (those damn Trojans are too hard-headed and engorged with pride to recognize true superiority when they see it), all Californians can hold their heads up with pride thanks to our excellent universities. I don't know if you noticed the recent Washington Monthly ratings of the nation's top schools, but they're giving the U.S. News and World Report a run for their money.... more ›

Extra Extra: It's Hammer Time!

Extra Extra: It's Hammer Time!

North County just can't catch a break lately: another fatal freeway pileup near Antelope Valley today, this one involving eight vehicles and at least one fatality. The freeway has been closed in both directions. Things Not Worth Beating Someone With a Hammer For: six dollars? A group of males accosted and hammered a man in Canoga Park last night; then they blew the cash on penny candy and stamps. Not really, but six bucks??... more ›

Worst (Long) Weekend In LA Sports History?

Worst (Long) Weekend In LA Sports History?

If you're a local sports fan, hopefully you had Columbus Day (International Day of Solidarity with Indigenous People, whatever) off to nurse a wicked hangover. In fact, maybe you should take tonight off from Sports Center, too. It's Leif Erikson day. Honest. Even George W. Bush knows that (and don't worry, he's probably not working today, either). Maybe it wasn't the worst, but it was up there. T.J. Simers hit the nail on the... more ›
