Memphis Tigers defeat UCLA Bruins 78-63. Memphis was too much for UCLA. While the Bruins kept it manageable for most of the game, the Tigers turned up the gear in the final five minutes to send the Bruins home. Darren Collison scored only two points before fouling out in the second half, and the Bruins couldn't get the ball to Kevin Love. Memphis will face Kansas Monday night in the championship game. San Diego......

UCLA 67, Washington State 59 - The #5 Bruins returned a favor by knocking off the #17 Cougars on their home court. Darren Collison scored all 18 of his points in the second half and Kevin Love had 16 on 6-of-8 shooting from the field. UCLA improves to 21-2 overall, and at 9-1 in the Pac-10 hold on to first place by a game over Stanford. USC 73, Washington 59 - USC looked strong in......

Clippers 103, Knicks 94 - Los Angeles won on the road for the first time in nine games, beating up on one of the only NBA teams that may be worse than the Clips. Two key players, Correy Maggette (19 points) and Chris Kaman (15 points), returned for the first time in several games. Coach Mike Dunleavy, however, was sick and stayed in the team hotel. He did have enough energy to issue an apology......

Rangers 16, Angels 2 - Welcome to opposite day; Cellar dweller Texas plastered playoff-bound LAnaheim and completed a three game sweep. A day after resting several stars, the Angels showed that they're still struggling with injuries. They got a couple runs in thanks to small ball (both were scored on sac flies), but gave up a whopping five home runs. One was hit in the first by Sammy Sosa. (You remember him, even if he......

Rangers 8, Angels 7 - Call it an emotional let-down. Call it a hangover. Call it whatever you want. The Angels lost when they should have been pushing even harder for home field advantage in the playoffs. Ervin Santana had a lousy start, giving up 6 runs on 8 hits in 5 innings. The loss left the Halos tied with Boston and Cleveland for best record in the AL. Beckham Watch - Paging Dr. Beckham.......

It's a national holiday, so we got this one posted a little late. For those of you wondering why we're not inundating you with USC coverage, that's because I'm posting All Things Trojan over at latimes.com. If you'd like to help us do some Trojan coverage here, drop me a line at adam@laist.com. Also, "LAst Night's Action" is only posting about three times a week but will return to a regular M-F schedule starting September......

So I survived a week in the desert, without having a shower or other modern amenities. Burning Man 2007 will go down as one of the most memorable burns in its 21 year history. From the premature immolation to the total lunar eclipse, from the dust storms to the increased security, from the late art installations to the amazing art cars, this year's burn will mark as the pivotal point for the future of......

The Dodgers have a certain way of making me look like a complete asshole. Just when I proclaim that it would take a miracle for the Dodgers to make the postseason, the offense explodes as if some saintly being was guiding them in the outfield. You know, they should make a movie about that. Against the Phillies on Wednesday the Dodgers scored 15 runs in an obvious show of laziness since a horrible Texas......

For many of us who live east of La Brea, Liquid Kitty is the Westside bar. On Sunday, they held their sixth annual Punk Rock BBQ. Swarms of old-school punks spilled from the super-packed watering hole and out onto Pico, where grills, crammed with hot dogs, hamburgers, and sausage sent smoke wafting high in the hot summer air. Inside, $2 Pabst Blue Ribbon and free music kept the crowd bopping and fist-pumping, and screaming......

Dodgers 5, Giants 3 - The Dodgers have been enjoying this rivalry lately, dominating over the past couple years and sweeping the Giants this weekend in San Francisco. It helped that Barry Bonds is mired in one of the worst slumps of his career, going hitless in his last 20 at bats (22, if you count the All Star game). He also booted a ball in left field and later threw a tantrum in the......

Thank heavens baseball is back. Despite my week of partaking in bacchanal debaucheries there was a void akin to eating empty calories. But enough about me. To open up the second half of the baseball season, the Dodgers and the Giants present the tale of two games. Friday night, the Dodgers held on to a slim 3-1 lead going into the ninth inning when the Dodger’s bats came alive for six runs to put......

Beckham Watch - The British are coming! The British are coming! Wait! The British are here! And they're drop dead sexy. Tonight's Action - Games are back! After a longer All Star break than most, the Angels will welcome the Texas Rangers at 7:05pm. Ten minutes later, the Dodgers will get underway in San Francisco. The Blue Crew joins three players (Martin, Penny, and Saito) who were already in town for the All Star game.......

The good thing about Chicago is that the beach that lines its Eastern border is all public beach. That's not so true about the city's suburbs. And in Malibu, it's tricky at best (remember the whole Geffen debacle?) But there are workarounds and if you want to get your sexy nerd tan on, the Los Angeles Urban Rangers have announced their "Malibu Public Beaches" Safari: The "Malibu Public Beaches" safaris will show you how......

Braves 8, Dodgers 6 - The Dodgers couldn't hold an early lead against Atlanta, as Brad Penny's stellar stats were tarnished with six runs and nine hits in just four innings. Chipper Jones was the star of the game, going yard from both sides of the plate. His 372nd career home run sealed the win for the Braves and set the club's all time record. Angels 5, Rangers 2 - LAnaheim avoided a sweep against......

Dodgers 7, Braves 6 - It feels like a good summer in LA. The weather is hot, the Dodgers are in first, three of the Blue Crew are going to the All Star Game, and everybody has the day off for the 4th. Well, almost everybody. The Dodgers will be back in action tonight and hope for some more on-field fireworks. Last night they connected for 13 hits to power home 7 runs. Wilson Betemit......

While a small number of hockey fans are still paying the electrolysis bill to remove "Mighty" from their bicep, many are just catching up with post-lockout rule changes. Around the Southland, people are scratching their heads over the possibility that the Anaheim Ducks may win the NHL crown. The Stanley Cup in Orange County? It almost sounds like a Chris Rock joke about the best golfer being black and the best rapper being white. Next,......

A Word or 146: It was fun to watch Molly Shannon on SNL. In general it was a great broadcast and she was just as funny now as she was then but who could really care about Linkin Park? Less fun is reading about the continuing poor decision-making by the networks in their upcoming program development. NBC is trying to cover all it's bases milking Heroes, their only good horse in the running, by creating......

Dodgers 10, Reds 5 - All nine Dodger starters had at least one hit or run scored, giving the team moms something to be proud of. Cincinnati's Ken Griffey, Jr. didn't disappoint, either, going deep on Mother's Day for the sixth time in his career. Ducks 4, Red Wings 3, OT - The Ducks evened the Western Conference Finals against Detroit at a game each and claimed home ice advantage heading into the next two......

Clippers 90, Lakers 82 -  LA's teams seem like they're headed in opposite directions. Kobe had 29, but the Clippers had five players in double digits. After the showdown at Staples, the Clippers have won seven of eight while the Lakers have dropped four of their last five. Both teams sit towards the bottom of the playoff field, with the Clippers (now a .500 team) only trailing their arena mate by a game and a half.......

Brewers 4, Dodgers 3 - The bums are playing like it. But they can still go 160-2, right? We'll find out on Wednesday when ace Jason Schmidt takes the mound. Angels 8, Rangers 3 - Anaheim is off to a great start, and guess what? The bullpen didn't allow a run in 3 and 2/3 innings. Sammy Sosa was held to 1 for 4. Nuggest 111, Lakers 105 - Denver just took away some breathing......

AP Photo/Francis Specker If you caught the last 4 innings of Monday's 4-1 Angel victory, you had a lot to like. Sure, earlier you saw Casey Kotchman lead off his season with a big fly to center field, and you even saw Mike Napoli steal a base, but what should really excite Angel fans is the way the Angels bullpen locked down the Rangers offense from the 6th inning on. John Lackey threw a......

Brewers 7, Dodgers 1 - Ben Sheets hurled a complete game two hitter, facing about as many batters in 9 innings as Dodger starter Derek Lowe did in 4. Read the highly optimistic LAist take here. Angels 4, Rangers 1 - It's not that Texas didn't have any opportunitites, it's just that Anaheim didn't let them capitalize. The Angels allowed eight men to reach scoring position, four on third base, but none of them made......

It has been a very busy week and although the weather has been pretty crappy, the play of the local teams have not. First and foremost with the MLB season opening, the Dodgers were picked anywhere from first to third in the division by various sports writers. LAist has always maintained that if the team, how ever hodge-podged it may seem, remains healthy they will contend. Well, we know how that went dont we?......

The Dodgers finished their disappointing season with a loss to eventual division champs San Diego Padres and closed the books on what was their worst season in over 10 years. We don’t know what was more frustrating, the fact that the Dodgers, just before the post season was to start last year, watched their first place team melt away under the misguided general management of the since fired Paul DePodesta. Or that the team......

The Mighty Ducks of Anaheim continued their dramatic makeover yesterday with the hiring of Randy Carlyle as head coach. Carlyle (right) comes to the Ducks with seemingly acceptable credentials (anyone seen the Manitoba Moose play recently?), and the promise of an up-tempo style of play. The up-tempo style comes under the orders of new GM Brian Burke (left), who is trying to turn the Ducks into Vancouver Canucks South. In theory, it sounds like......

The Angels won and the Dodgers lost on Opening Day, so as you can imagine, the Los Angeles Times interprets this a sign of things to come. While LAist doesn't doubt the Angels are a great team, we'd like people to evaluate the Dodgers on more than one game against Jason Schmidt. Perhaps halo fans should be concerned that only Vlad Guerrero could muster any damage off of Texas' Ryan Drese. But then again,......

The long-awaited and much-expected NHL lockout is in full effect, meaning you probably should not expect to see a Kings or Ducks game any time soon. The NHL's problem is that it's pretended hockey is a major sport for over a decade, and the reality is that with pathetic TV ratings, falling attendance, and an overambitious expansion, hockey barely registers a tick on the sports radar screen these days. After the Kings reached the......
