Tonight In Rock: Amanda Blank, Barcelona, Local Natives, Alex & Sam

Tonight Philadelphia-based rapper and singer Amanda Blank will be performing in-store at Amoeba Music in Hollywood. Seattle-based Barcelona will be headlining the Troubadour with Denver-based pop-rockers Meese. And, lastly, local jazz-infused pop duo Alex & Sam (LAist Interview, Review) are poised to grace the Hotel Café. But we strongly suggest heading over to Spaceland to catch the second night of Local Natives' (LAist Interview) month-long residency. LAist favorites Red Cortez (LAist Review, #2) and Rademacher (LAist Review, #2) are slated to open.

Local songstress Juliette Commagere has had the Monday night residency at The Echo, and last week, she was joined by Ceci Bastida, Commagere's brother Robert Francis, and Fresno-based Rademacher.

Last Monday, local indie band The Movies (MySpace) continued their month-long residency at Spaceland (MySpace) in Silver Lake, with support from Sarah Negahdari and The Sad Solids (the acoustic version of The Happy Hollows), Rademacher (MySpace), and Vibe Slayer (MySpace). It was also a release party for The Movies' new album , and what a party it was.

Tonight LA is busy with the usual Monday night residencies. We've got Rademacher at the Echo, Kenan Bell at Spaceland and Manhattan Murder Mystery at Mr T's Bowl. And San Diego-based indie rockers Pinback will be headlining the Echoplex. But seeing them live does tend to expose how big of a slob front man Rob Crow actually is—both musically and, well, otherwise. Could we pass up recommending to go see Andrew Bird perform at Largo at the Coronet? Absolutely not. The classically-trained violinist will demonstrate his mastery of the language with his awe-inspiring one-man show for one last night.

It's Monday and that means the lion's share of shows are free residencies. Fresno-based Rademacher will continue to rock over at the Echo. And LA-based new wave outfit Manhattan Murder Mystery will continue to croon at Mr T's Bowl. But we wholeheartedly suggest checking out Kenan Bell's Monday Night Residency at Spaceland. Our favorite two-man instrumental band El Ten Eleven, who are best known for the seldom-used guitar/bass doubleneck, will be opening up the show with wailing notes and disco beats.

Following a particularly boisterous weekend of exhaustive shows, Los Angeles will remain relatively mum. Liz Phair will be concluding a two-date stint at the Troubadour, revisiting Exile in Guyville in its entirety once more. NPR is currently streaming last night's performance. And as per usual, we've got the free Monday Night Residency at the Echo and Spaceland. Fresno-based indie rock act Rademacher (LAist Review) will be headlining the Echo with other noteworthy local acts Radars to the Sky (LAist Review) and Light FM. But we recommend heading over to Spaceland to see English folk rockers Noah and the Whale. Tonight will be the band's final performance in the States before returning to their side of the pond.

Last month, local band The Airborne Toxic Event (MySpace) returned to Spaceland (MySpace) in Silver Lake to headline a show that included The Deadly Syndrome (MySpace), and The Henry Clay People (MySpace) with support from I Make This Sound (MySpace) and Le Switch (MySpace). As aptly described by Mouse from Classical Geek Theatre, "Before a mixed-crowd of longtime fans and recent, true-believing converts, The Airborne Toxic Event rewarded ticket holders with a near flawless-set that could have just as easily been played at The Hollywood Bowl, The Kodak Theatre, or Coachella. There was no melodrama, very little hype, and nobody on stage had to prove anything. It was just the band and their songs; naked, raw, hard-boiled."

Last month, local band The Happy Hollows (MySpace) performed at The Echo (MySpace), opening for The Ruby Suns (MySpace) and Architecture in Helsinki (MySpace).

Last month, local band Radars to the Sky (MySpace) had a month-long residency at The Echo (MySpace).

Last Friday, LA-Underground presented a showcase with Shiloe (MySpace), El Olio Wolof (MySpace), Rademacher (MySpace), and The Monolators (MySpace), at Mr. T's Bowl (MySpace) in Highland Park. El Olio Wolof and Rademacher also performed on Sunday at Spaceland (MySpace) in Silver Lake as part of Classical Geek Theatre's show.

Speaking of local rock duos (and also tonight), The Pity Party (MySpace), who were interviewed here at LAist earlier this month, conclude their February residency at Spaceland (MySpace) in Silver Lake.

I've always been intrigued by other "best of" lists, but this year I decided to take it to a whole new level. I e-mailed a handful of bands that I've seen this past year in order to unearth what exactly captivated them in '07. As music listeners, it is our duty to take a keen interest in our favorite musician's influences. After all, they rocked our little world, might as well see what rocked their...
