Tonight In Rock: The Swell Season, The Big Pink, Generationals, Radars To The Sky

Tonight the Swell Season, an indie folk duo formed by Irish musician Glen Hansard and Czech singer and pianist Markéta Irglová, will be gracing the Wiltern with Idaho's own pop folk singer-songwriter Josh Ritter in tow. New Orleans-bred indie pop act the Generationals are poised to perform at Spaceland, warming up the stage for Canadian indie pop outfit the Hidden Cameras and Guelph-based indie rock singer-songwriter Gentleman Reg. Local indie rockers Radars to the Sky will be ringing in their latest disc at the Echo with none other than Le Switch. But we strongly suggest heading over to the El Rey Theatre to catch London-based electro-infused rock duo the Big Pink. Long Beach natives Crystal Antlers (LAist Review) and LA-bred goth/dance-infused rock duo IO Echo are slated to kick things off.

Tonight In Rock: The Music Tapes, Saint Motel, The Flying Tourbillon Orchestra, Mike Stinson

Tonight the Music Tapes, a NY-based experimental indie-pop project of Elephant Six member Julian Koster, will be performing at the Echoplex. LA's own indie rockers Saint Motel (LAist Interview) are slated to rock Spaceland. And, lastly, local country troubadour Mike Stinson will be headlining an early show at the Echo. But we strongly recommend heading over to All Star Lanes in Eagle Rock to catch the Flying Tourbillon Orchestra (LAist Review, #2). LAist favorites Marvelous Toy, Radars to the Sky (LAist Review, #2, #3, #4) and Death to Anders (LAist Review) are poised to kick off the show.

Tonight In Rock: Shiny Toy Guns, Alex & Sam, Fol Chen, Calvin Johnson

Tonight Grammy-nominated electro-pop act Shiny Toy Guns will be performing at Hard Rock Cafe at Universal City Walk for KROQ's Super Bowl Party. Local folk duo Alex & Sam (LAist Interview, Review) are slated to play Home Restaurant in Silver Lake. This week's edition of Part Time Punks at the Echo will be centralized around the Cure. And, lastly, Olympia's own underground rock king Calvin Johnson is set to rock out at the Smell with local singer-songwriter Devon Williams in tow. But we strongly suggest heading over to Spaceland to see Highland Park-based indie-pop outfit Fol Chen, who will be accompanied by their contemporaries Light FM and Radars to the Sky (LAist Review, #2, #3).

Tonight Australian-American singer-songwriter Rick Springfield (LAist Review) will be performing at Club Nokia. Social Distortion (LAist Review) front man Mike Ness is closing out his extensive stay at the El Rey Theatre. Grammy Award winners Los Lobos will be rocking out at the House of Blues Sunset. Local musician/producer extraordinaire Jon Brion (LAist Review) is slated to jam with friends at the Largo at the Coronet. The Hotel Café will kick off their three-night "ho-ho-tel" holiday extravaganza with an impressive array of singer-songwriter types, like Meiko (LAist Review, #2, #3, #4), Greg Laswell (LAist Interview, Review, #2, #3) and Gary Jules. And, lastly, LAist favorites Radars to the Sky (LAist Review, #2, #3) are slated to celebrate the release of their forthcoming full-length at Spaceland with Swedish husband/wife act Wildbirds and Peacedrums. But we recommend doing whatever it takes to get into the Troubadour. Phantom Planet, who have struggled endlessly with their musical identity since the untimely departure of Jason Schwartzman (LAist Review), will be playing their last show ever!

Following a particularly boisterous weekend of exhaustive shows, Los Angeles will remain relatively mum. Liz Phair will be concluding a two-date stint at the Troubadour, revisiting Exile in Guyville in its entirety once more. NPR is currently streaming last night's performance. And as per usual, we've got the free Monday Night Residency at the Echo and Spaceland. Fresno-based indie rock act Rademacher (LAist Review) will be headlining the Echo with other noteworthy local acts Radars to the Sky (LAist Review) and Light FM. But we recommend heading over to Spaceland to see English folk rockers Noah and the Whale. Tonight will be the band's final performance in the States before returning to their side of the pond.

As aptly described by Mouse from Classical Geek Theatre, "Before a mixed-crowd of longtime fans and recent, true-believing converts, The Airborne Toxic Event rewarded ticket holders with a near flawless-set that could have just as easily been played at The Hollywood Bowl, The Kodak Theatre, or Coachella. There was no melodrama, very little hype, and nobody on stage had to prove anything. It was just the band and their songs; naked, raw, hard-boiled."
