Interview: Members of Local Gay and Lesbian Band to March in Inauguration Parade
For the first time in U.S. history, a marching band comprised of Americans identified as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and queer, will perform in the Presidential Inaugural Parade. Of the 177 musicians from twenty six states representing the Lesbian and Gay Bands Association (LGBA), four will represent Los Angeles.
Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 28, 1986
By William S. Burroughs For John Dillinger In hope he is still alive Thanks for the wild turkey and the Passenger Pigeons, destined to be shit out through wholesome American guts — thanks for a Continent to despoil and poison — thanks for Indians to provide a modicum of challenge and danger — thanks for vast herds of bison to kill and skin, leaving the carcass to rot — thanks for bounties on wolves...
TV Junkie: (Not So) Big Wednesday
If you don't want to watch football over the next 4 days you are screwed. Normally I would tell you to head over to TCM or IFC for some fine movie action but it's slim pickins my friends. TCM has (lamely) decided to schedule a 3 day Andy Hardy marathon starring everyone's favorite short actor, Mickey Rooney, as the misguided but lovable Andy Hardy. One or two Andy Hardy movies is fine, but several days...
DVD Tuesday: Apocalypse Then
movie as much as it does a big, dumb Hollywood action movie. I miss the old, non-invulnerable John McClane. Zeppelin party at my house! Bring the sharks!
TV Junkie: Tuesday Picks
This week seems to be the week that new sitcoms will be unleashed upon us. Tonight we have the bizarre historical moment in which commercial characters have now secured themselves an actual network television series. We're of course talking about Cavemen. While GEICO may have created a successful commercial campaign, one would think that the idea of a series could have been tested online much more economically. Everyone is predicting a flameout and that the...
I Heart WeHo Dykes
Last night I put on a white “I Love WeHo Dykes” t-shirt, merged with the throng of Dyke March 2007 attendees, and paraded down Santa Monica Boulevard, a street coincidentally named in honor of the patron saint of abused, victimized, and neglected women. It may seem strange to some that I would do such a thing given that I am not Dyke, Lesbian, or Queer. But as a woman, a West Hollywood resident, and a lover of civil rights, I cannot lie. It is true. My t-shirt is accurate. I do love Dykes. I love them for their courage, their defiance, and their sacrifice. And as women, we share a traceable genealogical line that extends beyond 180,000 mitochondrial generations, making us all grand-daughters of the same Eve-of-origin.
Where Are They Now - Richard Blade
LA's airwaves have been blessed with legendary personalities over the years - Chick Hearn, Vin Scully, Jim Ladd, and Rodney on the Roq just to name a few. Just as important was Richard Blade who for decades educated LA over KROQ's air by spreading the good news of Depeche Mode, The Smiths, Duran Duran, The Cure and so many of our favorites from the '80s when KROQ ruled the world. His "Flashback Lunch" hour...
A Pre-Valentine's Date With John Waters at Amoeba
Still wondering what to give your sweet transgressive for Valentine's Day? Filthy, lovable, mustachioed filmmaker John Waters is releasing A Date With John Waters, a stirring yet suitably bizarre compilation album of his favorite love songs. To celebrate the album's release Waters will be at Amoeba Records in Hollywood tomorrow, February 6 at 6 PM, signing CDs and posing with fans in a Valentines setting.
The album spans oddities such as the first record Waters ever owned, "Tonight You Belong to Me" by Patience and Prudence, to the "first trisexual song ever recorded," "Ain't Got No Home" by Clarence "Frogman" Henry, to the wailing blues of Ike & Tina Turner's "All I Can Do Is Cry" to the "perfect song for an awkward moment," "Sometimes I Wish I Had A Gun" by Mink Stole.

Amy Jo Goddard's Top 10 Sex Paraphernalia for the Adventuresome Spirit of any Orientation
Amy Jo Goddard, aka HoneyToes, is a professor, and professional sexuality trainer and consultant. The UC Santa Barbara graduate and author of Lesbian Sex Secrets for Men (well before the Queer Eye guys showed up), was nice enough to give us a Top 10 Sex accessories list that we are sure you would rather read than this intro...
Celebrity Photo: 1st Time.
Except for a visit to the set of "All My Children" in 1981, where I was photographed with a family friend, actress Ruth Warrick, I have never been in a photo with a real live celebrity. This tragic record of obscurity was unbroken, until yesterday afternoon, when I was waiting to see "Hollywoodland" at the Arclight..... and Jai Rodriguez of "Queer Eye" walked by.
Around the Globe with the -ists
San Francisco is proud host of a new reality show called "How to Get the Guy" that's unfortunately not a descendant of Will and Grace, Queer Eye, The L Word, American Idol etc. Also a biodefence lab is coming to the East Bay and SFist teaches wine pairing.
AM news: there's a riot going on
Rioting continued yesterday in the LA County jails in Castaic. The LA Times reports more than 500 inmates were involved, nearly 100 were injured and 28 had to be hospitalized.
LAist Loves Lesbians
We found ourselves at the premiere of the lesbiriffic romantic comedy April's Shower last night at the Regent Cinema in Hollywood. Attending a gaysploitation premiere is a little bit like attending a major movie premiere, only smaller and obviously gayer. There were all the usual requisites: a red carpet (small, no bouncer), television reporters (from something called 'Q Television') and plenty of sub D-list celebrities hoping to score an extra drink ticket, but the whole thing was a lot less Brokeback Mountain and a lot more Muff Dive Molehill.
LAist Watches: Forty Deuce
Guess we won't be visiting Forty Deuce Hollywood again. In what mostly can be described as a 44 minute infomercial, the burlesque bar noted for its famous clientele and high energy dance routines (not to mention insanely expensive drinks and tight quarters) began its run as a reality show on Bravo last night. Bravo has taken to Hollywood life like crazy with its reality schedule in the past year with Blow Out, Project Greenlight, and even an LA based version of Queer Eye. Forty Deuce the series takes a look at club creator Ivan Kane's expansion of his signature club into Las Vegas.
The LAist Interview: Dr. Josh Kun
LA native Josh Kun demolishes the myth of the tweed jacket wearing, Euro-centric cannon defending, Ivory Tower clinging English professor. As an intellectual jack-of-all-trades, Kun’s interest in mainstream and far-flung aspects of pop culture ensures he’ll never succumb to the latter component of the "publish or perish" maxim. In addition to his position as Associate Professor of English at UC Riverside, Kun contributes to numerous periodicals and is the author of numerous essays, such as the introduction to Papa, Play for Me: The Autobiography of Mickey Katz. Other projects include his forthcoming book, Audiotopia: Music, Race and America (due this fall from UC Press), and a post as contributing critic to "The Movie Club" with John Ridley (coming to AMC in May). His professional roster also encompasses multimedia curating, serving as a DJ and VJ, consulting on matters related to Latin music and numerous aspects of pop culture, and writing about Tijuana.
