DVD Tuesday: Porno!

In more able hands, Zack and Miri Make A Porno could have been a funny and insightful movie about sexual commerce, exhibitionism, friendship, financial desperation, etc. With Kevin Smith writing and directing, though, it was a shallow, dirty joke that had a scene where a guy was shit on by a constipated whore. I laughed a few times overall, but isn't it time Kevin just went away? If you want to see an infinitely superior movie, check out Nick and Norah's Infinite Playist. Michael Cera is as close to a guarantee as we have right now. Had Bottle Shock just stayed with Rickman it would have been better than merely mediocre.

As expected, Marky Mark's had a surprisingly strong start on Friday before tailing off slightly as the weekend continued. Apparently, Americans just can't get enough of their flawed yet heroic president, George W. Bush.

Judging by the sour critical reception, it sounds like Max Payne probably sucks. They did cut one hell of a trailer, though. Harry Knowles loved Sex Drive, but then again he also loved Godzilla. How do you not go see W.? I mean, a film about George W. Bush directed by Oliver Stone. The curiosity factor alone will pull me in. What Just Happened? received a dismal response at Sundance this year. The original book by Art Linson, however, is a gem. Who knew Alec Baldwin was such a douchebag? Everyone.

If you're as excited as I am about was only a half-success.

I'm shocked at the middling critical response that Cloverfield has generated. Sure, it's only a popcorn movie, but it's a is not a huge box-office hit. I also can't imagine there not being a huge backlash any day now. Flame away!

Of all the big holiday releases, I Am Legend is probably the one I'm least excited to see. And that's saying a lot considering , I just get the feeling that there's absolutely nothing in the movie that will surprise me. And I'm sure that the dark ending of Matheson's source novel has been scrapped in favor of something more life-affirming. Because Will Smith never loses, right? Depressing.

Last night I got a ticket at the last minute to go see Harry Potter and The Order of The Phoenix, because my rabid Potter fan of a friend had discovered the release was bumped up from the 13th, (although the posters everywhere had not been changed). And while I'm not quite rabid, I did want to see it. It was a 10:30 showing at Grauman's Chinese Theater and I was still blissfully lounging...

Well, it's Red Bulls and vodka for those of you playing the LAist Oscar drinking game. ? Really? That was the one nominated film this contributor has seen, and, as Jason observed months ago, that movie featured well-crafted dialogue, but blatant messages more than subtle insight. But it was the cherry on top of the Academy's Sunday of earnest self-congratulation.

This post is like Lewis Black on Sometimes there are stories that slip through the cracks, big and small, around LA and we don't get to them during the week. Stories We Missed is here to catch them and bring them to you. Better late than never, right?

The average taxicab driver of Los Angeles must be out to prove something. Maybe they have a chip on their shoulder because they aren't the first thing that pops into someone's mind when they think of a typical "cabbie". That honor has to go to the New York taxicab driver. Those guys are usually pictured in one of two ways; either an overweight, older man, with a pull-down cap on his head, growling "Where to, pal?", or the foreign driver, speaking barely passable English, who has only just arrived in the city yesterday.
