About 30 people gathered yesterday to assist the National Park Service and other regional parks agencies in developing a new interagency headquarters, centrally located in the Santa Monica Mountains at King Gillette Ranch, just outside of Calabasas.

It's about 18 square miles in size, has more than 60 entrances, contains 36 miles of trails and is surrounded by eight communities, but the last time any plan was set in motion about Topanga State Park was in 1977 (.pdf). This year, state officials are revisiting the parks' general plan, which in essence revisions the park's future development and programming.

  

When it happens, it will be a one seat ride from Long Beach to Pasadena and Culver City (or perhaps Santa Monica) to East LA without an extra fare or timely transfer (officials say you can save up to 21 minutes on an end-to-end commute). Count eight years into the future and this could be the reality for Los Angeles, thanks to Metro's Regional Connector, a light rail link to connect the Gold, Blue and Expo Lines. Currently, the routes terminate just over a mile from each other, either at Union Station or the 7th/Metro Center Station.

Tomorrow is the first public workshop of an 11-part series called "Creating a Humane LA," which seeks to help people better familiarize themselves with LA Animal Services’ efforts to achieve “No-Kill” in their shelters. Currently, with the high volume of animals, shelters euthanize them to make room for more. To that end, tomorrow's topic explores high volume, low-cost, spay/neuter programs. Shocked by the horrific road raging motorist vs. cyclists incident on Mandeville Canyon Road this past holiday weekend, the cycling community has rallied in the last four days to fight for justice and to ensure that Los Angeles city leadership, law enforcement and the judicial system respond to incidents such as this.
