Metro is using their new blog the right way--with timely updates. From today: "The Gold Line is currently shut down between Highland Park and Southwest Museum stations. At about 1:15 p.m. an umbrella from a neighboring residence blew onto city power lines above train tracks, creating a potentially dangrous situation for the trains beneath. DWP, Fire Department and Metro officials are on the scene. Metro riders are advised to use either Metro bus lines 81 or 83 or to take the Gold Line to either Highland Park or Southwest Museum station and board buses that are shuttling passengers between the two stations. We’ll be posting updates as they occur." UPDATE: Trains are running on a single track, expect 10-15 min delays this afternoon, says the LA Times.

As firefighters get an upper hand on the Station Fire in portions of Acton, officials with the L.A. Department of Water & Power feel relieved enough to announce a decreased threat to two of their 500 KV lines. If those lines were to be cut off from the city's power grid, there was the potential of blackouts due to the mixture of hot weather with increased power consumption and reserve power plants not being able to handle that demand on energy.

The downed power line that caused the 14,000 acre Sesnon Fire was owned by the Southern California Gas Co., who are not regulated by the state's Public Utilities Commission, at least when it comes to power line regulations, the LA Times finds: "Commission rules require power lines owned by electric utilities to be inspected regularly and to have brush under the lines cleared to prevent fires. But commission spokesman Tom Hall told The Times that the rules don't extend to nonelectric utilities on private land." Looks like it's time to change the law.
