Imagine a land of wall-to-wall music, booze and BBQ. Now, make it green for St. Patrick's and add the revelry that comes with it, and you have Clusterfuckpalooza '11. The worlds of SXSW and St. Patrick's Day converged Thursday night in Austin in what amounted to a city wide party that would rival the greats. What has been learned and painfully realized in the past few days, is that SXSW is a war of stamina and patience. Treating this like a normal festival will only leave you frustrated and exhausted. At any given time there can be up to 10 bands you really want to see at entirely diffrent points across town, and LAist did the sprinting to bring you photos from some of these killer sets. Thursday night included: The Bangles, TV on The Radio, The Kills and Portugal. The Man.
LAist @ SXSW : Day 3 - TV On the Radio, The Bangles, The Kills, Portugal. The Man
Tonight In Rock: No Age, Avi Buffalo, Portugal. The Man, Nico Stai [Updated]
Tonight local noise-infused rock act No Age (LAist Review, #2, #3), Mika Miko (LAist Review) will be performing at the Center for the Arts, Eagle Rock with none other than Brooklyn-by-way-of-Olympia ambient outfit Growing. Wasilla-bred indie rockers Portugal. The Man are poised to perform for free at Space 15 Twenty in Hollyweird, touring in support of their sixth full-length endeavor—2010's American Ghetto. And, lastly, LA-based indie rock troubadours Nico Stai will be taking on the Bootleg Theater with Shadow Shadow Shade (formerly known as the Afternoons) in tow. But we strongly suggest heading over to the Troubadour to catch Long Beach/Los Alamitos natives and recent Sub Pop signees Avi Buffalo (LAist Interview, Review), who will be ringing in their hotly anticipated self-titled debut. Local ambient rockers Voices Voices and Brooklyn-based indie rock act the Wailing Wall are slated to kick things off.
Coachella: Day Two 04/17/10
With so many bands playing, the breadth of Coachella’s line-up can be a curse as well as a blessing. It forces the fans to make a choice between potentially up to 5 acts they may all love. Unfortunately, I have been faced with decisions such as Them Crooked Vultures or Grizzly Bear, Dead Weather/MGMT or Muse, and on Sunday Phoenix/Thom Yorke or Pavement/Gorillaz. Most of these decisions have essentially been an old favorite vs. a curious desire to see a different band. So far, the old favorites are up 2-0.
Tonight In Rock: Bon Iver, Rain Machine, Telefon Tel Aviv, Portugal. The Man
Tonight Wisconsin-bred folk singer-songwriter Justin Vernon, otherwise known as Bon Iver (LAist Review), will be performing at the Wiltern with none other than Durham's own Megafaun. Brooklyn-bred TV on the Radio's Kyp Malone is poised to stop through the Echo with his solo endeavor Rain Machine. And, lastly, Wasilla's own rock outfit Portugal. The Man will be headlining the Troubadour with Cambridge-based rock duo Drug Rug. But we strongly suggest heading over to Spaceland to catch Telefon Tel Aviv, a Chicago-based experimental electronic duo that experienced the unexpected passing of one of its two members—Charles Cooper—at the beginning of the year.
Tonight In Rock: Usher, Portugal. The Man, Miranda Lee Richards, AIDS Wolf
Tonight Atlanta-based R&B-pop sensation Usher will be charming the pants off ladies at Club Nokia in Downtown. LA-based singer-songwriter Miranda Lee Richards is gracing the tiny stage at Tangier. Texan indie rockers Tenlons Fort will be playing Mr. T's Bowl alongside two local singer-songwriters, Angela Correa (of Correatown) and Rachael Cantu. And Montreal-based noise rock band AIDS Wolf is plowing through the Smell. But we recommend stopping by the Troubadour to catch Halifax's own Wintersleep. The Canadian indie rock maestros will be opening for Portugal. The Man, who find themselves in the unfortunate position of sharing a hometown with a despicable woman—Wasilla, Alaska it is!
