‘Bald’ Bryan Bishop’s ‘Inconvenient’ Brain Tumor

Colored lights flared and strobes flashed. Dozens of exotic dancers gyrated and jiggled as music suited for getting undressed pulsed through Las Vegas’ Spearmint Rhino. Thirty year-old Bryan Bishop, or “Bald Bryan” as he’s known to listeners of The Adam Carolla Show, and now The Adam Carolla Podcast, opened a tiny plastic baggy and slushed back a pill with his ice-cold vodka and Red Bull. A glittery stripper expressed her curiosity for what she assumed was Bishop kicking his Bachelor Party revelry up a notch.

Even the occasional Adam Carolla listener -- whether during his decade on KROQ's Loveline, mornings via KLSX's The Adam Carolla Show, or digitally on his iTunes-topping The Adam Carolla Podcast -- knows the Ace Man has a great much to say about his formative years in North Hollywood. This 2007 rant (part of Zocalo's Public Square lecture series) is no different. (Zocalo hosts the full chat: How to be a Genius Without Even Trying: A Conversation with Adam Carolla.)

SuperEgo Interview: Inside the Mind of the Podcast

As podcasts go, more often than not there are the kings of the ring, and everyone else is sitting on the sidelines. It’s sort of like the presidency: technically anyone can run for office, but historically old white dudes have passed the torch from one wrinkly hand to another. But every once in a while, there are wonderful examples of podcasts, and presidents, rising from the ground up to really do something spectacular. Barack Obama is one of these. The SuperEgo podcast is another.

About those Petroleum Eating Bacteria Found in La Brea Tar Pits

Here in Los Angeles, the non profit charged with conserving most of Catalina Island's 76 square miles is not exactly one you hear about every day. But who knew that the Catalina Island Conservancy has been producing a daily environmental podcast for over three years now that is broadcast on over 225 radio stations across the country? They're short and sweet, fact checked by two scientists and speak to the group's larger mission of the environement--after all, as they say, we are all on an island.

Gone from KLSX 97.1 FM, Adam Carolla has taken to the Internet. The North Hollywood-native’s first podcast was released today. It spanned a commercial-free 37 minutes. This begins Carolla's promised Monday - Friday daily podcast.

Pencil This In: Podcasting Mixer, The Crimson Kimono Screening,

There’s a screening of Sam Fuller’s The Crimson Kimono tonight at 8 pm in Ramo Auditorium. Here’s the premise: “A pair of LAPD detectives, a murdered stripper, and a love triangle—the quintessential mid-century L.A. story. The twist in director Sam Fuller's largely unseen gem are its interracial relationships and Little Tokyo setting.” A panel discussion, hosted by Larry Mantle of KPCC FM, will features Lon Kurashige, Associate Professor of History, American Studies, and Ethnicity, University of Southern California; Henry Sheehan, Film Critic; James Shigeta, actor from The Crimson Kimono..

Los Angeles is filled with hardworking comedians; they’re practically bussed in from Milwaukee or St. Louis or Tampa or wherever funny comes from. For long-time writer/actor/comedian Jason Nash, it took years to discover that maybe the comedy can come from your own basement. With the continued success of his long-running podcast Guys With Feelings, Nash uses his own basement to talk about familial frustrations, life in (and outside of) ‘the biz’, and any interesting tidbits his hilarious comic friends can think up.

We caught up with Mahalo Daily host/producer Veronica Belmont at Community Next over the weekend to discuss her daily (weekdays) video podcast for Santa Monica-based Mahalo.

Today we interviewed a top online news editor and wanted to share the goods. This interview was conducted by LAist during the Knight New Media Centers Politics and Cyberspace conference. Does anyone really still call it "cyberspace?" Dave Herman is the daily editor of the MSN.com homepage. We discussed the hits and misses on the evil empire's Redmond, WA-based portal, including the Janet nip-slip and the Virginia Tech massacre, before we were rudely cut off......

Podcasting may have not tipped the point like blogging has, but its significance and importance will last long. And to insure proper service to yourself in this day and age, you need to jump on the bandwagon and at least grab the daily free music offered to you. iTunes Store users know that every Tuesday brings a free song to your collection. How would you like an additional 10 songs a week? Thanks to...

While UCPD tinkers around with tasers, LAPD has been playing with their audio equipment. What they presented on their blog yesterday is not truly a podcast, but merely an audio stream of a news conference. But hey, one step at a time, right? The first "podcast" is an audio recording of Chief Bratton's November 14th press conference where he reads a statement in response to the videos floating around the 'net (one, two) and...

It’s easy to forget how many Angelenos influence what we read, consume and think. For every telegenic actor accepting an award or CEO discussing his latest stock offering with a journalist, there is a phalanx of publicity professionals and marketing specialists choreographing the entire event.

If you're a hockey fan in LA, you may feel your sport gets short shrift. It's hard: the Kings take the better part of a season to score 81 points, and Kobe can do that in a single night. Yet there are determined hockey fans here, and one of them has the weekly SoCal Hockey Cast, podcasting about local favorites and hockey beyond LA. We're hockey novices, but we like this podcast: it's conversational and engaged and we could kind of figure out what it was talking about. And while we're usually a bit wary of podcasts that include precocious children, we absolutely loved Genevieve (maybe 5 years old) saying "The Kings had a pitiful week."

The Bloggie award nominees are up, and we want to give props to those, em, getting props. Now the voting is open, so hit the page and give your love to those who deserve it. We must note:

One of our favorite things to do is to download a Podcast of Evan Kleiman's KCRW show, Good Food. This past week's installment was its usual mix of informative and delightful, highlighted by a chat with the Food Network's handsome grilling man Bobby Flay, who gave out some pointers on maximing your grilling potential. Even though we here in LA can chill and grill just about all year, we thought we'd pass on the basics before we're too knee-deep in summer.
