LAist REVIEW: God Of War III

LAist REVIEW: God Of War III

A hallmark of the series has been the deft combination of various gaming conventions - hack-n-slash, platform gaming, inventive puzzle solving, quick-time events, quest based item collection - with epic, over-the-top carnage, a viciously black sense of humor, and a homoeroticism-free take on Greek mythology. Plus, gratuitous titties. Two weeks ago, after nearly 3 years since seems almost superfluous - those who've played the previous games are going to love this one, sight unseen. more ›

Interview: Evan Wells, Co-president of Naughty Dog

"If you own a PS3, you've got to have this game. (Gametrailers.com)" 5 Stars. 10 out of 10. Game of the Year. Best of Show. The best action game to date. With a Metacritic score of 96 (out of 100), Uncharted 2 is universally acclaimed and with a million copies sold in the first week, it makes Uncharted 2 the must have game of the year. After many sleepless nights researching (read: playing) the sequel, LAist got to chat with Evan Wells, co-president of Naughty Dog. more ›

Soul Calibur IV: Holding You Over Until Christmas

Soul Calibur IV: Holding You Over Until Christmas

Earlier last month, LAist got to head over to E3 to check out the latest and greatest that the video game world had to offer. Sure we got to get our hands on some great demos like Little Big Planet and Mirror’s Edge, but it is in this blogger’s opinion that 2008 is the year of the fighting game. While the Internets have been abuzz with videos and screen caps of Street Fighter IV (the first Street Fighter to come out in about 10 years), there’s one little title that burst on to the scene during the Dreamcast era that pretty much revolutionized the combat-genre. Courtesy of our cool friends at Namco/Bandai, LAist received a copy of the latest installment of Soul Calibur, arguably the most in depth fighting game on the market. more ›

E3 2008 Roundup

E3 2008 Roundup

what with all the booth babes and swag bags and throngs of gamers huddled outside the LA Convention Center chomping at the bit for a taste of the next Soul Calibur or Resident Evil or Final Fantasy. But that isn’t to say that the entire industry is at a loss for its bespectacled past. In fact, the reinvented, invite-only E3 (as of 2007) and the creation of E for All (which welcomes the public) is highly indicative of the scope of the gaming world. So its hard to argue that the industry is more popular now than it ever was. That being said, read on to find out the highlights of this year’s E3.

This past week, LAist got a chance to travel up to San Francisco to check out the Game Developers Conference. This year we got to see a ton of kickass stuff, including an exclusive look at the new Street Fighter title from Capcom and a drunken jaunt on the Wii Fit. Check out more photos from GDC after the jump. more ›

I Paid $64.12 For This?

I Paid $64.12 For This?

With so many epic video game titles making their debut last year, 2008 has some pretty big shoes to fill. Several titles released in 2007 undoubtedly rank the highest among several industry top 10 lists; Bioshock, Call of Duty 4, and Mass Effect to name a few. These games have proven and will continue to prove that they will be quite difficult to surpass in quality. Such competition is exactly what makes the gaming industry as successful as it is; publishers pushing hardware technology to the limit to optimize the consumer experience. more ›

Holiday Gift Guide for the Die-Hard LAist

Holiday Gift Guide for the Die-Hard LAist

It's time. As much as we hated seeing silver stars and winter white wonderland at the Beverly Center as early as October (did they completely gloss over Halloween or did we just miss it when they were promoting it back in, say, July?), we must accept that Holiday shopping is indeed upon us now that it's December. To make it easier on us all, LAist has toiled, worn out our mouse clicking fingers, scoured... more ›

People Waiting Outside the Hollywood Best Buy for PS3

We were gonna go and interview the kids waiting outside for the new Sony Playstation 3, but a little thing called Life got in the way. Thankfully our pals at Current.tv not only took a crew out there but a guitar as well. Our only question, why did they bleep out the word "weed"? Anyways, thats what was going on in Hollywood which seemed sunshiney and chill, here's a rundown of some of the... more ›
