This was the kind of game it was for the Pittsburgh Pirates in their 15-1 loss to the Dodgers.
In the first inning centerfielder Andrew McCutchen looked at the ball that came off Matt Kemp’s bat. He took a couple of steps back towards the wall as the ball was beginning its ascent into the hazy yet bright sky. As he continued to look at the trajectory, he stopped in his tracks realizing the futility of it and just went back to his position in centerfield.
Dodgers Laugh Away on Fan Appreciation Day
How Do You Solve a Problem Like UCLA?
It really is a shame. The Rose Bowl is a gorgeous place to catch a football game. Set in amongst the hills in Pasadena, knowing the history of the stadium, it is breathtaking.
James Loney Dots the Dodgers' Victory
With the Pittsburgh Pirates in town for what are essentially meaningless games, it was amazing the Dodgers drew 41,148 to the park. But with the confluence of fireworks night, Star Wars night, singles night and the start of the Hello Kitty promotion for the weekend, the astonishment was downgraded to a mere nod of respect to the promotions department. While the game might have dragged on, at least the crowd got a 7-2 Dodger win out of it.
Pirates Sink Eveland and Dodgers
With Dodgers’ starter Dana Eveland notching a 0.60 ERA in his two starts with the Dodgers, it was apparent that it was unsustainable considering his lifetime ERA of 5.52 in seven seasons in baseball. After breezing through the first inning, the law of averages got its revenge in the second inning in the Dodgers’ 6-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates.
LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Blank Bucs
Hiroki Kuroda got only the two runs of support in the top of the sixth inning thanks to a Juan Uribe double play and a Jerry Sands RBI double to right field. Kuroda (W, 4-3) in turn gave the Dodgers seven innings of a three-hit shutout walking only three batters and striking out eight. Paul Maholm (L, 1-5) unfortunately couldn’t keep up with Kuroda in that sixth inning. Matt Guerrier pitched a perfect eighth while Vicente Padilla got his third save of the season. Reliever Hong-Chih Kuo was put on the 15-day disabled list with anxiety disorder. Scott Elbert will meet the team in Pittsburgh to replace Kuo.
LAst Night's Action: Ducks Win Home Opener
Anaheim Ducks defeat Vancouver Canucks 4-3. Things didn’t look right from the start. It was the Canucks, not the Ducks who came into the game leading in penalties and penalty-minutes, who were in the penalty box in the opening minute of the game. In fact less than a minute later the Ducks went on a 5-on-3 man advantage. Something is wrong here. Right as the original penalty expired, Captain Ryan Getzlaf got off the schneid and scored his first goal of the season giving the Ducks their first lead of the season.
LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Do Nothing in Houston
Houston Astros defeat LA Dodgers 3-2. Another day, another loss. Andre Ethier had staked the Dodgers and Ted Lilly (L, 8-10) to a two-run lead after hitting a homer in the first inning after Jamey Carroll got on base thanks to an error. The lead held up until Lilly made one mistake to Chris Johnson who belted a three-run homer in the sixth. The Dodgers had many opportunities to take the lead, but if you’ve seen the Dodgers lately the results aren’t surprising. John Lindsey got his first at-bat after 16 years in the minors as a pinch hitter for Lilly in the seventh inning. Lindsey flew out to center. The Dodgers now have a six-game losing streak, yet are still not mathematically eliminated from the postseason.
Dodgers Got Busy Quick
The Dodgers and general manager Ned Colletti were busy today acquiring pieces in hopes of making a third consecutive postseason run.
LAst Night's Action: Lakers Claw Against Jazz
LA Lakers defeat Utah Jazz 104-99. In Game 1 of the first round, the Lakers got out to a big lead in the first quarter then coasted to a victory over the Thunder. In Game 1 of this series, the Lakers got out to a big lead in the first quarter, but had to fight and scrape their way to victor. The Lakers had an eight point lead going into the fourth quarter, but the bench would blow the lead. The starters came in with 7:32 left and the Jazz continued...
Dodgers Batter Pirates 9-3
With the Dodger bats backing him up, Hiroki Kuroda gave the Dodgers one of his patented starts with no walkages for the Dodgers’ 9-3 win.
LAst Night's Action: Angels Blow One in Detroit
Detroit Tigers defeat LA Angels 3-2. Scott Kazmir started out shaky getting the bases loaded with one out in the first inning. However he held it together allowing only one run to score. The Angels tied things up in a strange fourth inning. Howie Kendrick hit a one-out single off of Jeremy Bonderman and advanced to second on a missed catch error by first baseman Miguel Cabrera on a pickoff attempt during Bobby Abreu’s at-bat. Abreu then hit a fly ball that while tailing away from right fielder Ryan Raburn slightly went in and out of his glove allowing Kendrick to advance only to third base. Raburn threw the ball to Cabrera who once again could not catch the ball allowing it to dribble back to the pitching mound. Kendrick went through third base coach Dino Ebel’s stop sign and scored to tie the game. The three errors in the one at-bat vaulted the Tigers past the Dodgers, Braves and Marlins to the top of the blooper-prone list in the Majors. The game was tied 2-2 in the bottom of ninth when with one out and Scot Shields pitching for the Angels, Johnny Damon took a fastball to right field walking off with the game.
A Complete Dodgers Effort Tops Pirates
Despite a troublesome April, the Los Angeles Dodgers are perfect in May.
LAst Night's Action: Lakers Thunder On to the Second Round
LA Lakers defeat Oklahoma City Thunder 95-94. With five minutes left in the game the Lakers held a 91-84 lead. In a matter of two minutes they pissed away the lead and then some. With 2:11 remaining Kobe Bryant hit a jumper to bring the Lakers to within 94-93. And for the next two minutes both teams traded jumpers and bad shots seemingly not wanting to win the game. After Russell Westbrook missed a jumper with 19 seconds left in the game, Kobe Bryant got the rebound and dribbled down the court as everyone in the...
Dodgers Power Up Their Offense
It is amazing how facing a pitcher with a 16.20 ERA can jump start an offense. Home runs by Andre Ethier and James Loney helped propel the Dodgers to a 6-2 win breaking a five game losing streak.
Dodgers Continue Woes at Home
Pittsburgh Pirates defeat LA Dodgers 2-0. With the cold blustery winds making Dodger Stadium seem more like Candlestick Park, a strange night was to be expected. The Dodgers only managed four hits while stranding seven base runners in their 2-0 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates.
LAst Night's Action: Kobe-less Lakers Make It Interesting in Denver
Denver Nuggets defeat LA Lakers 98-96. In hockey terms, Kobe Bryant was a healthy scratch for the Lakers. In media terms, TNT was crying. As for Laker fans, it almost turned out well. The Lakers climbed back from a 15 point deficit in the...
LAst Night's Action: Dodgers, Angels and Clips All Lose
Pittsburgh Pirates (2-0) defeat LA Dodgers (0-2) 4-3 (10 innings). Since PNC Park opened in 2001 the Dodgers cruised through going 23-7 until last season when they struggled going 1-3 at the end of the season while trying to clinch the NL West. It looks like those struggles have continued in this first series of the season. The Pirates didn’t care that Clayton Kershaw led the Majors with the lowest opponents’ slugging percentage with Garrett Jones hit another homer in the first inning with runners on first and second. While Kershaw didn’t give up another run, he had problems finding the strike zone running up his pitch count. The Dodgers responded in the fifth inning when Russell Martin hit a leadoff homer, the first for the Dodgers this season. After Rafael Furcal reached on an error, Matt Kemp drove him home with a double and Ethier knocked Kemp home with a single to tie the game.
LAst Night's Action: Pirates Outpower Dodgers
Pittsburgh Pirates (1-0) defeat LA Dodgers (0-1) 11-5. Vicente Padilla’s and George Sherrill’s bad spring extended into the first game of the regular season as the Dodgers were shelled by the Pirates in a sunny Pittsburgh. Pirate’s right fielder Garrett Jones feasted on Padilla hitting two homers in his first two at-bats: the first with Akinori Iwamura on first in the first inning that landed in the Allegheny River to tie the game at 2-2...
LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Fail Again
Pittsburgh Pirates defeat LA Dodgers 11-1. On their second try to try and clinch the NL West, the Dodgers failed miserably. Only today they had no shot whatsoever. Three baserunning mistakes that led to three outs in the first two innings will not get it done. But then again having a spring training lineup won't help things either. Just to make sure the score was somewhat respectable, Chin-Lung Hu hit a sac fly in the ninth inning with one out to score Orlando Hudson. However a couple of positives come out of this: Vin Scully will now be calling the Dodgers clinch, and the Dodgers will do it in the visiting clubhouse at Petco Park. Sweet!
Kemp Powers Dodgers to Sweep Pirates
Usually weekday afternoon games are sparsely attended. But the Dodgers made a brilliant marketing decision to give away Manny Ramirez bobbleheads at the game leading to an explosion of humanity.
In fact 53,193 people showed up to witness the Dodgers sweep the three-game series from the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-1, the seventh sell out of the season for the Dodgers. It’s the largest weekday non-Opening Day day game in Dodger history.
Ethier Does It Again
Pittsburgh Pirates All Star pitcher Zach Duke was wheelin’ and dealin’ like Frank Dux trying to salvage what was left of the Pirates’ season with a victory against the Dodgers. However it was the Dodgers who had the final say with their Chong Li laugh beating the Pirates 5-4 in 13 innings.
Already Looking Ahead to Next Year
Lookie what we Dodger fans have here: the preliminary 2010 schedule.
For the second year in a row the Dodgers will be opening the season on the road. In what can be surmised as a way to make up for this season, the Dodgers will open the season at PNC Park against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
“That will be warm,” manager Joe Torre said when alerted of the fact.
Of Ideal Gasses and Pirates
The ideal gas law states that p=nRT/V where p is pressure, n is the amount of stuff, R is the gas constant, T is temperature and V is volume of the gas.
In a solid state pressure is defined as p=ma where m is mass of stuff and a is the acceleration of the stuff.
Acceleration is defined as a=v/t where v is velocity and t is time.
Therefore p=nRT/V=mv/t
How Do You Solve a Problem Like Billingsley?
Remember the days when Dodgers starter Chad Billingsley was that reliable arm? It didn’t matter what happened the night before. It was a given when he was given the ball you could pencil in a win for the Dodgers.
Since August 23 Billingsley in five starts has an 0-4 record with an 5.67 ERA. Opponents are batting .342 against him. Mind you these aren’t World Series caliber opponents. These numbers are against Cincinnati, Chicago Cubs, Arizona Diamondbacks twice and the San Francisco Giants.
LAst Night's Action: Heading Down the Stretch
LA Dodgers defeat Pittsburgh Pirates 4-3 (12 innings). This was a very strange game. Bad defense followed by great defense in one play. Squeaking runs through. It wasn't pretty, but a win is a win. Starter Clayton Kershaw could only go five innings and for most of the game it was back and forth. James Loney finally came through with the winning RBI single in the 12th inning. The Dodgers magic number is now down to seven and face only the Giants and Padres in their remaining nine games. If things go right, the Dodgers could clinch the division at home.
LAst Night's Action: The Bitch Is Back
Pittsburgh Pirates defeat LA Dodgers 15-8. So I'm on the other coast not paying attention while they win and Juan fucking Pierre hits a home run, and I come back and they give up eight runs in the seventh inning. All I have to say is at least there was more scoring than the Auburn-Mississippi State game on Saturday. But whatever. The Dodgers can't win every game, and at least they have a decent lead in the division.
LAst Night's Action: Dodger's Bats Continue On
LA Dodgers defeat Pittsburgh Pirates 8-1. I left work late, so I missed the six runs the Dodgers scored in the first two innings. Apparently Matt Kemp avoided a run down by playing dead. Really. Brad Penny pitched a strong 5 2/3 innings and closer Takashi Saito pitched a perfect ninth to come back from his disastrous outing Monday night. James Loney has now gotten a hit in the first 15 games, and Rafael Furcal went 4-4 with a walk tonight.
LAst Night's Action: Lakers are Number 1
LA Lakers defeat Sacramento Kings 124-101. No tacos for the fans, but joy still rang out with the Lakers clinching the #1 seed in the Western Conference for the first time since the 1999-2000 season. If anyone predicted this 57-25 season after the chaos of last summer that simmered through training camp, they are liars. It's amazing what the emergence of Andrew Bynum, Lamar Odom, the bench and the Pau Gasol heist can do to a team. The Lakers now face either the Denver Nuggets or the Dallas Mavericks in the first round.
LAst Night's Action: Saito Blows Save, Pirates Rally
Pittsburgh Pirates defeat LA Dodgers 6-4. The Dodgers were leading 4-3 in the top of the ninth, and I had just finished writing this blurb. Dodger closer Takashi Saito gave up two singles then the Earl Weaver to the Pirates Nate McClouth. This was a rough loss despite a good outing by Hiroki Kuroda who gave up three runs on six innings. Andruw Jones hit a triple and look to resemble the hitter we thought he was going to be. And of course there was Vin Scully butchering Pirates first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz's name.
They're All Outta There!
I love manager ejections. I love it when the manager gets up in the ump’s grill and lets him have it. With that said, it seems to me that Grady Little has the tamest ejections in the history of baseball (click on the appropriate linky for a video of the ejection).
