Any evening with Portland-based "little orchestra" Pink Martini is a party, and their two New Year's Eve shows at Walt Disney Concert Hall will be the perfect way to welcome 2012. Yesterday, LAist spoke with Pink Martini lead vocalist China Forbes to discuss her recent vocal cord surgery, why she loves L.A.'s music venues, and what to expect on New Year's Eve.

Tonight In Rock: Pink Martini, Wild Nothing, Bowery Beasts, Dunes
Tonight showtune maestros Pink Martini (LAist Interview, Review) will be headlining the Hollywood Bowl. Silver Lake-based rock and roll quartet Bowery Beasts are poised to take on the Troubadour with LA-based indie rockers Sweaters. And, lastly, local post-punk act Dunes will be gracing the Smell in Downtown. But we strongly suggest heading over to the Echo to catch Virginia's own retro 80s lo-fi pop sensation Wild Nothing, who will be performing for this week's edition of Michael Stock's Part Time Punks.
Hollywood Bowl Poster Art Show at the Arclight
After a summer of memorable shows at the Hollywood Bowl, the 2009 posters will be exhibited at the Arclight along with many images created for bowl performances throughout the years. No one will forget Grace Jones master class in theatricality and the night that Jenny Lewis and Ray Lamontagne shared their unique authenticity with the Bowl audience. These shows and more hold a special spot in our hearts and now can take their place on our walls.
Tonight In Rock: Pink Martini, The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart, The Most Serene Republic, The Henry Clay People
Tonight showtune maestros Pink Martini (LAist Interview, Review) will be headlining the Hollywood Bowl. Canadian indie rockers the Most Serene Republic are poised to take on Spaceland with Brisbane-bred trio the Grates. And, lastly, local indie rock outfit the Henry Clay People will be performing at the Lobster Festival at the Port of Los Angeles in San Pedro. But we strongly suggest heading over to the Troubadour to catch NY-bred indie pop act the Pains of Being Pure at Heart (LAist Interview).
Interview: Thomas Lauderdale of Pink Martini
One of the songs on Pink Martini's forthcoming album, "Splendor in the Grass", includes the line, "Life's a lot richer with a healthy mixture...not to mention lots more fun!" In addition to capping off a great musical romp, this statement also encapsulates the essence of Pink Martini. Over the course of 15 years, four albums and one live DVD, this little orchestra has crafted a sound that's both modern and retro, and Saturday night they'll take the stage at the Hollywood Bowl.
Tonight In Rock: Your Guide To NYE '09
Tonight LA has its fair share of NYE options. French Rumba Flamenca outfit the Gipsy Kings are slated to headline the newly renovated Conga Room (LAist Review). Long Beach-bred rapper Snoop Dogg is poised to flow at the House of Blues Sunset. Legendary alternative rockers Stone Temple Pilots will be performing at Club Nokia in Downtown. Showtune maestros Pink Martini are gearing up for two gigs, one early, one late, at the Walt Disney Concert Hall. Bob Marley's backing band the Wailers will be jamming at the Roxy. Santa Barbara-based folk rockers Toad the Wet Sprocket will be rocking out at the Canyon Club. Israeli trance outfit Infected Mushroom are set to headline the Hollywood Palladium. Little Radio will be throwing a NYE extravaganza at the Bank with Ariel Pink, Crystal Antlers, Restavrant and Port O'Brien. And, lastly, local indie rockers the Henry Clay People and the Happy Hollows will be coming through Spaceland. But from the bevy of options we strongly suggest heading over to the Echo to party with the Blood Arm. The rollicking quartet will surely kick the New Year off with a bang.
LAist Interview: Thomas Wilkins, Principal Guest Conductor of the Hollywood Bowl
Friday night the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra will be conducted by Thomas Wilkins, the new Principal Guest Conductor. A native of Norfolk, Virginia, Wilkins serves as the Music Director of the Omaha Symphony and the Resident Conductor of the Detroit Symphony. Last summer Wilkins led the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra in the fireworks finale with Pink Martini. With great enthusiasm for his new gig, he will be conducting several programs at the Bowl this summer.
Pink Martini @ The Hollywood Bowl, 9/14
As a big fan of music, the outdoors and people walking around with purple wine mustaches, I’m not pleased to report that this was my first trip to the Hollywood Bowl all year. I don’t know what happened – I’ve seen some of my favorite bands there and sometimes even go just to whoop it up in the cheap seats regardless of who’s playing for an excuse to eat too much cheese and hang...

China Forbes is the ultra-fabulous frontlady of Pink Martini, a 12 piece “little orchestra” based in Portland, Oregon. Pink Martini is the kind of band that serves up a little sumthin for everyone – their multi-lingual repertoire ranges from lounge to Latin, classical to cosmopolitan and they’re huge stars in France. This Friday, Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 14, 15 & 16) the band hits the stage at the Hollywood Bowl accompanied by our very...
LAist Interview: Carol Channing
The Cocoanut Grove at the Ambassador Hotel was the place to go for live entertainment in Los Angeles. Frank Sinatra, Barbra Streisand, Judy Garland, Sammy Davis Jr., and Merv Griffin were among the many legends to perform there. This weekend Pink Martini will recreate the nightclub's magic at The Hollywood Bowl. Merv Griffin was to have performed at these concerts. Now the evening will include a tribute to him. The one and only Carol...
