Tonight there is way too much going on in LA. For starters, Latin/hip-hop outfit Ozomatli will be spending their second night at the House of Blues Sunset. The front men of Thrice, Saves the day, Sparta/Sleepercar and Switchfoot will all be playing to a sold-out crowd at the Troubadour for an Invisible Children Benefit. Local musician/producer extraordinaire Jon Brion (LAist Review) is poised to jam with friends at the Largo at the Coronet. LAist's favorite b-boys People Under the Stairs are headlining the El Rey Theatre. Hawthorne-bred rapper Pigeon John will be performing at the Knitting Factory with electronic mastermind Daedelus. And, lastly, Darker My Love and the Soft Pack (formerly known as the Muslims) are slated to headline the Echoplex. But, all things considered, we recommend making a trip out to Eagle Rock. Somehow, someway Fuck Yeah Fest organizer Sean Carlson has arranged for Metallica (LAist Review) to play an acoustic set on the tiny stage at the Center for the Arts, Eagle Rock.

Yesterday was Xena: Princess Warrior picket day at the WGA Strike. Tonight, Xena herself, Lucy Lawless, will be bashing heads and belting out songs over at the Roxy. And earlier this morning, we interviewed Talib Kweli who will be at the House of Blues down the street from the Roxy at House of Blues.

Here at LAist, we know that everyone loves a Derby Girl. So we’re pretty sure that this Saturday night, when the lovely ladies of Angel City Derby Girls pair up with Meltdown Comics to hold an art auction, Eat Your Art Out, it promises to be a good party.

We didn't think there would be any Tonight in Rock column today, but we were wrong. Vault 350 in Long Beach is hosting a night of hip hop and rap starting at 8:30 p.m. Twenty bucks at the door.

Etta James & Chuck Berry - "Rock n' Roll Music"

Every so often when we feel so inspired to do so, we feature a photo from a photographer in the LAist Flickr Pool. It's another way of giving the many excellent photographers in our pool the attention that they deserve. Everyone knows Santa Monica College has a radio station (KCRW 89.9). And CSUN (KCSN 88.5) and CSULB (KJAZZ 88.1) too. Even Pasadena City College (KPCC 89.3) and USC (KUSC 91.5) have theirs. Where is UCLA's?...

Pigeon John is so LA that he doesn't neglect the South Bay, like so many others choose to do. That's why he's gonna be at Venezia in Redondo Beach tonight, bringing the love to all the bitches, as per usual. We love Pigeon John, partly because he can make non-hiphop people stop and say, "Hey what's that? Turn it up!"

You may have noticed a new button on our left-hand column with the title We See The Best Concerts. It dawned on us the other day that we really do go to the best concerts and we usually write about them the next day or a few days later. So here's a wrap up of all 37 shows we reviewed this month, with links to the posts just in case you missed it. Chris...

Packing the house, Pigeon John got silly-tastic his first time headlining the Troubadour Friday July 20th (yesterday). He had DJ Chief XL, of Blackalicious fame, keeping the beats-a-bangin and the wax-a-scratchin. The above video is from almost the end of his set, of which was an hour long, and fun as hell. Pigeon John is the kind of hip-hop show you would bring your non-rap friends to, so that you could convert them into hip-hoppers, cuz they would see that it's not all about bling and whatever crunk is.

Sonic Youth - "Kool Thing" (yes we know tonight they're playing Daydream Nation in its entirety but surely there will be an encore, right?) After suffering an enormous hiphop-deficit in the beach cities, some relief is on the way via Pigeon John. Have you heard of him? He's that clueless, sister-dating, blues-singing, summertime pool-partying rap star from Los Angeles. Yeah that dude with all those dapper duds on. Now you be with it.

So check it, that dude is gonna play that new hotspot The Shore, in Hermosa Beach on June 27th. It's some kinda KRCW Presents type thing, and there'll be other rap stuff too.

We don't know about you, but it's friggin cold out there. Well, not for some of you. It seems as though places that are supposed to be cold are warm and places that are supposed to be warm are cold. Or maybe that's just us. Either way, we're freezing.

coffee, in the morning, outside, sitting alone) the best thing about
being PJ is the shoes. The shoes come from everywhere and they make
me feel like the young Sammy Davis Jr., if you will. They glisten on
the dusky sidewalks of L.A. They keep me company. Now the worst thing
about being the Pigeon is the vats of depression that spill on me in
the morning....the huge puddles of despair that I fight to leap
over...and the little dark guy in the corner that wants to ruin my
life....slowly.

Where are your favorite cities to do shows, and where does LA
rank?

Whittier, CA is my favorite city in the world to play. They're number
one. There's Memphis, Orlando, Boulder and Seattle too. L.A. Is
always fun, but the fun comes at a price. I get real nervous when I
headline shows in Lost Angels. The weight of trying to blow up leans
in on you all day. Show LA or more precise, Hollywood would rank at
number 15 in the places I like to play.

Where's the best place to buy clothes in LA?
Another great question Sherlock Holmes! That's 2 for you and none for
me. The best place to shop for clothes would be Wasteland on Melrose.
They have one in SF as well. Vintage, classic, endless amounts of
anything you'd ever think of thinking of thinking about. Its cheap
too. Great, sleek shoes laughing at you and the slacks dance around
on their hangers....the hats float.

What happened with you and L.A. Symphony?
Wow, you're really going for it aren't you? Is your name Dracula? Do
you want blood? Me and LAS went our separate ways in 2003 when I had
to make a decision to do LAS or PJ full time. I was missing Symph
shows because I'd be out touring alone....so it had happen I guess. I
always wished we all could come and go and schedule tours around each
other, keeping our identities as well as keeping the group
alive...but I guess you can't have your cake and eat it too. Or we
didn't think we could. We could've though....we strangled each other
out of wanting to do it anymore. Oh well.

What non-hiphop influences do you draw upon?
Rock and Roll is great. Jazz delivers. Electronic kills. Old Country
is rad. The Streets and The Strokes dance in my head a lot. Bob Dlyan
intimidates me. Stevie Wonder is untouchable. D'Angelo too. (Where's
is he now? Please come out with another album coke head!). Honeycut
is our Bread. The list goes on and on. I have very big ears and
eyes.....Charles Bukowski is King. I try and draw solely from people
that are way ahead of me....I try not to hang around the playground
too much. Crabs in a bucket.

The obligatory: How did you get the name Pigeon John?
Jesus gave it to me. I was walking through Inglewood one day when out
of nowhere Jesus rolled up on me in a '77 Cutlass Supreme...4 doors,
grey. He hopped out and handed me a dead pigeon. He whispered "Please
have a good time, you're really bumming me out." I watched him sink
back into the cushioned seats and drive, quickly away. And that's
when it happened, the pigeon started shaking violently and became
awake, picked up and flew away. I don't think I had a choice....its
was "pigeon" or die.

Not that we care what they think in Frisco but the SF Weekly (wait, we thought you weren't supposed to call it SF? hmmmm) named Honeycut the Best Soul/Funk Band in town.
