Shepard Fairey Fair-Use Case Fallen Apart?

Los Angeles-based artist Shepard Fairey might be left with only his "hope" when it comes to the suit and counter-suit battles being waged in court right now regarding his iconic adaptation of a photograph of Barack Obama for use in his 2008 Presidential campaign.

The Leaked Rihanna Photo: 2 Officers Placed On Leave

Two officers have been placed on paid leave as a probe continues into how a battered photo of Rihanna was leaked to TMZ, according to four unnamed sources speaking to the LA Times. In the early morning hours before the Grammys last February, Chris Brown threatened and assaulted Rihanna, his girlfriend, after a dispute. About a week and a half later, TMZ posted a leaked police photo of Rihanna showing cuts and bruises. The celebrity website was very hush-hush on where they obtained it and the LAPD asked the public's help in the case.

Santa Barbara Fire: As Seen from Space

As they always do with major fires in Southern California, NASA released a photo showing the burn scared mountains from the Jesusita Fire from May 10. The photo "shows the northern part of the burned area, which stretches from the outskirts of Santa Barbara (hidden beneath clouds) into Los Padres National Forest," says NASA. "Many valleys throughout the burned area appear to have been spared; green vegetation lines them like the veins in a leaf."

Photo of Rihanna Following Her Fight with Chris Brown Leaked to TMZ

Early Thursday evening, TMZ released a leaked photo taken of Rihanna immediately after her altercation with Chris Brown in which he allegedly beat her. From the picture one can see that Rihanna's whole face is extremely swollen with two huge bruises on her forehead, a busted lip and what looks to almost be a broken nose. If reports of the abuse are true, Chris Brown didn't simply get upset, yell at and shove his girlfriend. No, he full on beat the crap out of her, making the beautiful songstress hardly recognizable. Unfortunately, with the degree of the injuries, one can assume this wasn’t the first time something like this had happened.

Where Shepard Fairey Got that Obama Pose for the Poster

Barack Obama was sitting next to George Clooney at a 2006 National Press Club event in Washington D.C. when freelance photographer Mannie Garcia snapped some shots of the now-president for the Associated Press. One o those images is now one of the most famous in the world. "It looks like the image that poster artist Shepard Fairey said looked presidential, telling the Washington Post: 'He is gazing off into the future, saying, 'I can guide you,' ' actually showed our new president listening to George Clooney. Or, probably more likely, fellow Senator Sam Brownback (R-Kan.)," said photographer and sleuth blogger Tom Gralish of the Philadelphia Inquirer. Gralish was obsessed with finding the photo behind the Obama poster and he finally did.

At least 100 residences were destroyed by an uncontained brush fire that was spotted in the Montecito hills northeast of Santa Barbara around 6 p.m Thursday and up to 1,200 more remain threatened, according to officials.

Last night's election was, as it has been and will be oft repeated, historic.

And this is why smoke related air quality and public health advisories are being issued everyday as the fires continue.

I'll just start by saying this: I LOVE Korean food. These Asian brothers and sisters know how to eat! And the selection of Korean food here in LA is just spectacular, just take a quick drive over to Korea Town and see for yourself.

I have so many fond memories of this place. I came to Pho So 1 at least once a week while studying at UCLA. The food is cheap, it came out fast, and right next door is Ranch 99 where you can pick up most anything you'd want to cook for the week. Pho So 1 is also probably one of the best Pho places even remotely close to West LA, and I'm very happy to revisit my old feeding grounds for a meal.

When my old boss Mike wrote to me a couple of weeks ago to tell me about Alligator Tacos in the valley, I was immediately sold. Big vicious remorseless killer reptilian taco? I'm so there! Hot's Cantina is in Northridge, inconspicuously occupying a single storefront in a mall. It seemed like this place is all about the ridiculously large nachos and tacos. (Nachos, by the way, were the size of costco pizzas.) Boy, there was a lot of tacos. 8 kinds of chicken, 7 kinds of pork, 9 kinds of beef, 9 kinds of seafood, and even 3 kinds of vegetarian. Oh, and there's a small section labeled "Exotic." I'm here for that. Alligator, duck, shark, kobe beef and lobster, and crayfish.

It's been a perfect weekend on the beaches near Los Angeles. There's a bike path that stretches from Pacific Palisades to Palos Verdes, and along one stretch of Dockweiler State Beach you'll find an area that's been dedicated by the City, County, and State as the home of modern hang gliding in the United States. Seemed like a perfect "photo of the day."

Il Chanti is a hidden gem, I tell ya, because although I had heard that there's a nice Japanese Italian place in Lomita, I could not have guessed that it was THIS good. This is definitely one of the best meals I've had so far this year. There's tons of pictures today, so let's get right to it.

Cracked Crab is my seafood fantasy come true.

Morro Bay is a beach town about 200 miles northwest of Los Angeles. On a recent trip I had the pleasure of dining in the area, and the result is this quick back to back weekend series. Come back tomorrow for even more seafood as we head down the coast to Pismo Beach. Today, though, we're sticking to the beautiful town of Morro Bay. Known as a fishing port and a tourist town, Morro bay has a good selection of seafood restaurants and I've got my sight locked on this one. Giovanni's is one of those half-seafood-market, half restaurant places. It came highly recommended for their fish and chips, and while I'm game for fish and chips, what I'm really here for is their oysters and crabs.

LAist Featured Photos pool contributor pink_fish13 ordered up the Farmer's Market Salad from Milk. With all those tantalizing ice cream concoctions on their menu it's tough to remember that not only do they serve meals there, but they have fresh, light fare, like this salad which is dotted with a delicious kind of milk product: "yummy goat cheese!" says our photog.

Our photo storage/sharing network of choice, Flickr, is finally offering a video component. In other words, Flickr will store, stream, and enable the embedding of any kind of content that can be produced by a basic digital camera (now that most shoot moving as well as still pictures). A Flickr Pro account is required to upload video, which at $25/year was already necessary to upload more than 100mb of photos each month. Also, at least for the time being, videos are restricted to 90 seconds (and no larger than 150mb).

I was very excited to go to Barrio Fiesta with my Filipino friends Isabel and William. I had very little exposure to Filipino food before, so I was mentally pumped to try all the new stuff they were going to throw at me. Let me say it now, I was not dissapointed. The restaurant is on the East side of Eagle Rock Blvd in Eagle Rock. The parking is a bit tough, as the good-sized restaurant only has a small valet lot. There's plenty of street parking in the residential zones a block away -- but the downside is that you have to breathe in the incredible smell of food as you walk to the restaurant.

I don't know about you, but I like my seafood fresh, cheap, and in big hearty portions. So when I heard about Seafood VIllage and their crab special, I had to drive over and see for myself.

It was a craaaaazy night on the town. You took dozens of photos with your pocket-sized digital camera. But you don't have Photoshop, and all you want to do is upload your pics directly to Flickr (something you could even do wirelessly if Hanukkah Harry hooks you up with with an Eye-Fi). Good news. Flick just went live with a new feature that allows you to crop, resize, touch-up, de-red-eye, brighten, and flip your...

Ah, Santa Barbara. Wine, adobe buildings, wine, nice scenery, wine... So a few months ago I shot a beautiful, simple wedding at the Santa Barbara Courthouse (Most of us bloggers have a life outside of LAist, dear reader. I happen to be a photographer.) Afterwards, we walked through the huge grassy courtyard, across the street, and right into this gorgeous little restaurant called Elements. We had some unbelievably good sandwiches and wraps at the...

I love shooting macro photos, especially involving things that don't move. It really allows you to leave the shutter open for a while and get some crazy detail on very small objects. For me, it takes a lot of things that people would find mundane and turns them into objects of beauty. I took a failed trip to McLogan's this morning, not knowing that they would be closed on Friday. As the foremost supplier to...

1. Cajun Style Deep Fried Turkey from Miss Peaches. See above. It's off the hook. 2. A seemingly endless supply of ethnic restaurants in Los Angeles. This is such a great place to be a food blogger. 3. LAist, of course. 4. Del Taco, which is actually open today. 'Cause when you're cooking up something ridiculous for dinner, the last thing you want to worry about is making lunch. 5. My Fujifilm camera --...

Here in the land of stars, we see celebrities all the time. Whether out shopping at the Beverly Center, grabbing a bite at Canter’s, or filling up their ride at the gas station, famous people still have a regular life to live just as much as us “common folk,” even if some celebs view themselves as God's gift to mankind. It’s nice to see these performers outside the context of their onscreen/on-camera/behind-the-mic personas to see...

Sitting on Main Street in Downtown Culver City, Novecento is a cozy little Italian joint you could easily overlook. I was walking by with mom on one of our ventures out to the local Indian spices shop when she noticed it and took a liking to the decor, so I took the parental units there on a friday night. Indeed, it's a lovely place inside, warmly lit (dim) and cozy, but it's the food...
