LAst Night's Action: Kings Needed Overtime To Get to Stanley Cup Finals

LAst Night's Action: Kings Needed Overtime To Get to Stanley Cup Finals

The Kings are going to play for Lord Stanley's Cup. As improbable as that statement might have been when they were losing to the Columbus Blue Jackets 1-0 in January, it's real. more ›

LAst Night's Action: The Clippers Season Is Over

LAst Night's Action: The Clippers Season Is Over

San Antonio Spurs defeat LA Clippers 102-99. And so the charade that is the Clippers' season comes to a screeching end. Despite trying to make a game of it, the Spurs calmly took control of the final minutes of the game sweeping the Clippers out of the STAPLES Center. more ›

Coyotes Bite Back Kings to Send Series Back to Phoenix

Coyotes Bite Back Kings to Send Series Back to Phoenix

It was a bit premature to crown the ascension of the Kings. For the second time in this playoff run that began 39 days ago, the Kings have been staved off from sweeping a team. Like Vancouver did in Game 4 at STAPLES Center in the first round series, so too the Phoenix Coyotes have found a couple of breaths of precious life in their season with their 2-0 victory. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Clippers Still Have No Answers for the Spurs

San Antonio Spurs defeat LA Clippers 105-88. The Clippers tried. After falling down 15 points in the first quarter, they managed to bring the deficit down to a point in the second quarter. But the Spurs were too good. more ›

Kings Put Coyotes on Brink of Extinction

Kings Put Coyotes on Brink of Extinction

The Kings are a scary team. After taking the Coyotes' best punch, the Kings responded in their stoic intensity taking Game 3 with a 2-1 win. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Kings Take A Licking, Keep on Ticking

LAst Night's Action: Kings Take A Licking, Keep on Ticking

Stick a fork in them, the Coyotes are done. Granted the Kings only have a 2-0 series lead thanks to Jeff Carter's hat trick. But the clawing desperation shown by the Coyotes and their cheap hits in the latter stages of the Kings' victory was an indication that this was over. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Kings Tame Coyotes in Game 1 Victory

LAst Night's Action: Kings Tame Coyotes in Game 1 Victory

LA Kings defeat Phoenix Coyotes 4-2. One week off didn't matter to the Kings as they continued where they left off winning Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals. They went into Glendale, Ariz. and thoroughly dominated the Coyotes in all three zones becoming just the fifth team in NHL history to win their first six games in the playoffs. more ›

LAst Night's Action: No "Laissez Les Bon Temps Roulers"

LAst Night's Action: No "Laissez Les Bon Temps Roulers"

Phoenix Coyotes defeat LA Kings 5-4 (SO). That’s it folks. Unless General Manager Dean Lombardi gets Rick Nash or Zach Parise or both or all or what not before the trade deadline on Monday, this is it folks. more ›

Horrid Play By Kings Brings Up Scary Questions

Horrid Play By Kings Brings Up Scary Questions

The Kings lost to the Phoenix Coyotes 1-0. I’m trying to think of positive things to say about this game, and unfortunately the only thing I could come up with was that Dodgers’ pitchers and catchers report to spring training on Tuesday. Being Dodgers’ Pride Night, Dodgers’ General Manager Ned Colletti dropped the puck in a pregame ceremony. more ›

Lakers and Ducks Get Lopsided Yet Ho-Hum Wins

Lakers and Ducks Get Lopsided Yet Ho-Hum Wins

After a night where two of the three best teams in the NBA Western Conference matched up and featured a ferocious dunk, somehow Tuesday night was a bit of a breather on the excitement meter in Southern California. Hell, only the last two championship winning teams in Southern California played. more ›

Doughty's Controversial Goal Mercifully Ends Offense-Deprived Hockey Game

For the 21st time in 23 home games, there was a sold-out crowd of 18,118 fill STAPLES Center to watch the Kings edge the Phoenix Coyotes 1-0 in overtime. Why? more ›

Kings Get the Gift of Offense

Kings Get the Gift of Offense

It’s appropriate that the Kings have worn all black as their home jerseys this season. Their offense has really fallen into a black hole this season with them dead last in goals scored in the NHL. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Kings Look Up at the Stars

LAst Night's Action: Kings Look Up at the Stars

Dallas Stars defeat LA Kings 3-2 (OT). After withstanding a Dallas flurry at the start of the second period, the Kings scored twice in just over 30 seconds: Mike Richards extending his career-high five-game goal streak and Kevin Westgarth with his first career goal. The last King to have a five-game scoring streak was Dustin Brown who had a six-game streak from Jan. 17 to Jan. 31, 2009. But with 20 seconds from a win, Loui Eriksson scored off of a neutral zone faceoff win to send the game to overtime. Steve Ott gave the Stars the overtime win. more ›

Kings Prolong Clinching Playoff Berth As Long As Possible

Two stinking points - that’s all the Kings have needed since after their Saturday afternoon victory over the Dallas Stars to clinch a playoff berth for the second consecutive season. After they got the snot beat out of them in San Jose on Monday to the tune of a 6-1 loss, the Kings tortured the sold-out STAPLES Center crowd of 18,118 into the shootout. But they prevailed with a 3-2 win to clinch a playoff berth for the second consecutive season. more ›

Kings Outlast Coyotes in 1-0 Victory

Kings Outlast Coyotes in 1-0 Victory

It was not a pretty game by any account unless you love a game filled with checks and blocks limiting scoring chances. For reference think of the Detroit Pistons-San Antonio Spurs NBA Finals of 2005. But the Kings players reveled in the challenge as Jarret Stoll’s power-play goal from deep down Figueroa at 12:13 in the third period was the lone score in the their 1-0 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes while tying a season low of 18 shots-on-goal. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Duck, Duck, Coyote

LAst Night's Action: Duck, Duck, Coyote

#1 Oregon Ducks defeat UCLA Bruins 60-13. Oregon made sure they didn’t repeat Alabama’s and Ohio State’s mistakes being felled as the top-ranked team of the country. Granted they racked up “only” 582 yards of offense, but they held the Bruins to 290 yards of total offense in their rout of UCLA. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Ducks Pull One Out

LAst Night's Action: Ducks Pull One Out

Anaheim Ducks defeat Phoenix Coyotes 3-2. For the second consecutive game, the Ducks led by two goals going in to the third period only to cough up the lead. Unlike Friday night’s game against the Thrashers, Corey Perry gave the lead back to the Ducks on a great feed from Ryan Getzlaf with 5:37 left in the period to put the Ducks on top. The Ducks tried their best to get the game to overtime allowing the Coyotes to take eight shots on goal thereafter, but Jonas Hiller stopped them all to give the Ducks the two points. more ›

Kings Can't Face Off Against Coyotes

Kings Can't Face Off Against Coyotes

Two faceoff losses by the Kings allowed the game to be tied 2-2 late in regulation as the Phoenix Coyotes beat the Kings 3-2 in the shootout. Neither team was sharp from the starting horn with the Kings having to go on the penalty kill three times within the first 14 minutes of the game. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Kobe-less Lakers Make It Interesting in Denver

LAst Night's Action: Kobe-less Lakers Make It Interesting in Denver

Denver Nuggets defeat LA Lakers 98-96. In hockey terms, Kobe Bryant was a healthy scratch for the Lakers. In media terms, TNT was crying. As for Laker fans, it almost turned out well. The Lakers climbed back from a 15 point deficit in the... more ›

LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Squeak by Nats

LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Squeak by Nats

LA Dodgers defeat Washington Nationals 7-6. What is it about the Washington Nationals that confound the Dodgers? The Dodgers pounced on rookie starter JD Martin with a four-spot in the first inning thanks to a Manny Ramirez RBI single and a Matt Kemp Earl Weaver. But they allowed the Nationals to come back and eventually tie the game up at six in the sixth inning. But Rafael Furcal led off the eighth inning with a solo shot to put the game out of the way. Furcal was a triple short of the cycle while Kemp was a double short of the cycle. Furcal now has two consecutive games of four-hit ball, and Kemp with his homer in the first inning collected his 100th RBI. Kemp and Andre Ethier become the first Dodgers duo to have 100 RBI since 2001 when Shawn Green and Gary Sheffield. With the Rockies loss to the Padres the Dodgers magic number for the NL West is four. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Smash Angels

LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Smash Angels

LA Dodgers defeat LA Angels 6-2. It was so nice to be back at my summer manse especially seeing the Dodgers beat down the Angels. This game put me a little more at ease about the pitching situation after watching the boys in blue shut down an Angels offense that have been running on all cylinders during spring training. Randy Wolf gave up an unearned run on four hits in three innings while Ronald Belisario pitched two scoreless innings in relief. Recently acquired Will Ohman struck out Bobby Abreu, the only batter he faced, on three pitches. While Jonathan Broxton had a shaky outing closing things out, he did strike out a lefty which had been a problem in the past. Meanwhile the Dodger bats seemed to come alive with homers from Casey Blake and Andre Ethier. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Can You Hand Me the Antacids?

LAst Night's Action: Can You Hand Me the Antacids?

#6 UCLA Bruins defeat #11 Virginia Commonwealth Rams 65-64. The game was awfully like UCLA's entire season. There were some good points when they took a double digit lead. There were bad points when they couldn't score a point for long stretches. But in the end it was defense that saved them. Down by one point with 11 seconds left to go, VCU inbounded the ball to Eric Maynor. Darren Collison was draped all over him and forced a short shot to preserve the Bruin victory. Up next for the Bruins is Villanova on Saturday on what can essentially be called home-court advantage for Nova. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Bobcats Maul Lakers

LAst Night's Action: Bobcats Maul Lakers

Charlotte Bobcats defeat LA Lakers 117-110 (2OT). Coming into the game the Lakers had lost their last two matchups against the Bobcats at the Staples Center. A team that has never won more 33 games in their four seasons of existence has really confounded the Lakers. It was more of the same in this game. Despite being outplayed by the Bobcats from the opening tip off, the Lakers had plenty of chances to win the game. But their shoddy defense of the Bobcats' screens left shooters wide open. Kobe fouled out towards the end of the first overtime, and the Bobcats took advantage. Trevor Ariza left the game in the first half with a concussion. No word yet on how long Ariza will be out. The Lakers now head off on the road. more ›

LAst Night's Action: A Tale of Three Runs

LAst Night's Action: A Tale of Three Runs

Indiana Pacers defeat LA Lakers 118-117. The Lakers outscored the Pacers in the first three quarters. They led by 16 points a minute into the fourth quarter. Then the Pacers went on a scoring run that was capped off by a Troy Murphy put-back off of a miss right before the buzzer went off in the fourth that gave the Pacers the one-point victory. Despite being 7-10 the Pacers also handed the Celtics a 16-point defeat in their second game of the season. The Lakers meanwhile suffer only their second loss of the season and face Philadelphia tonight. more ›

Hockey's Back!

             + 8 more

Oscar Moller scored during a power play goal-mouth scramble with 1:17 remaining to give the Los Angeles Kings a 6-4 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes on Monday night in the opening day of their pre-season competition. Meanwhile, in Kansas City, the other half of the Kings beat the St. Louis Blues, putting the Kings in first place. But don't get too used to it since this is a rebuilding season, and the Kings are on a youth movement with a lot of young new names like Voynov, Hickey and Doughty. We were at Staples Center to capture photos of the new recruits. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Hu Clutch in Dodger's Victory

LAst Night's Action: Hu Clutch in Dodger's Victory

LA Dodgers defeat San Diego Padres 3-2. Dodger second baseman Chin-Lung Hu zinged a liner down the third baseline in the top of the ninth to score in Russell Martin from second base for the go-ahead run. The Dodgers end up taking two of three games from the Padres at Petco, and Jake Peavy denies using pine tar Saturday afternoon. more ›

Game Day Preview: Kings Must-Win?

Game Day Preview: Kings Must-Win?

It might seem hard to believe that tonight’s game between the Phoenix Coyotes and your Los Angeles Kings carries any weight, but it does, and I’ll tell you why. With 21 games left in the season, and a lowly 53 points to their cellar-dwelling name, the Kings would be mathematically eliminated from playoff contention with a loss tonight. more ›

Found in [Greater] LA: Jobing for Prophet

Found in [Greater] LA: Jobing for Prophet

This billboard has been bugging me for months and it's all over LA. WTF is "Jobing?!?" Surely it's more than just a website designed to capitalize on typos of the unemployed. But what is this Jobing Community of Greater Los Angeles all about anyway? Is it community in the Eco-Village sense? Is there a secret society that worships the prophet Job? Do they have gaming casinos? more ›

LAst Night's Action: Belated Birthday

LAst Night's Action: Belated Birthday

Last night's only local action on the field, court, or ice was the Kings. Since nobody was surprised that they fell 3-2 to the Phoenix Coyotes, we figured we'd use this edition to ask a simple question: What kind of freebies can you get in LA on your birthday? A certain LAist sports editor remembers getting cones at Baskin Robins, and this past Tuesday YAS (Yoga and Spinning) in Venice Beach invited him down for... more ›

TV Junkie

Weekend Edition OK, so the TV Junkie completely missed Friday, this was because of a 50 mile backup on the MassPike so that's unlikely to happen in the near future. Now the TV Junkie is quite drunk in San Francisco which doesn't mean he doesn't want to be drunk in LA with you wonderful people. This doesn't mean it won't happen again, we're only somewhat human. College Football (ABC, ESPN and wherever else, at... more ›
