It was a rough introduction to the Major Leagues for Angels’ 23-year old starter Garrett Richards. Called up during his first year in Double-A ball to fill in for the suspended Jered Weaver, Richards certainly got a baptism by fire.
LAst Night's Action: Richards Knocked Around in MLB Debut in the Bronx
Dodgers Blow 6-0 Lead, Swept By Phillies
Hip-hop and modern rock were noticably absent from the Dodger Stadium public address system this afternoon. Music from the 1940’s could be heard; it matched the Dodgers' powder blue Brooklyn uniforms from that era. However, with an emotional 9-8 loss to the Phillies, the Dodgers’ contemporary struggles were very much on display.
More Than Meets the Eye in Dodgers' 2-1 Loss to Phillies
Just a cursory look at the box score, and nothing would seem amiss in the Dodgers’ 2-1 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies. Phillies’ starter Cliff Lee was his usual transcendent self pitching eight innings of shutout ball. But a closer look would show how strange a night it was at Dodger Stadium.
Dodgers 5-3 Loss to Phillies a Sad Story
The Dodgers’ 5-3 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies was sad so many ways.
It was sad because the Dodgers really tried. They got nine hits off of Cy Young winner Roy Halladay and 13 hits total off of the best team in baseball.
LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Blanked in Philly
Philadelphia Phillies defeat LA Dodgers 2-0. Things were strolling along in the muggy night at Citizens Bank Park with Phillies’ starter Cole Hamels and Dodgers’ starter Hiroki Kuroda pitching a nice duel. The only hit in the early going was an infield single by Andre Ethier in the first inning. Then things got interesting.
LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Strike Out Against Cliff Lee, Phillies
Philadelphia Phillies defeat LA Dodgers 3-1. A leadoff double by Wilson Valdez in the third inning doomed Dodgers’ starter Ted Lilly’s outing. He would go on to give up two runs thanks to RBI singles by Placido Polanco and Ryan Howard. Meanwhile the Dodgers faced seven innings of Cliff Lee and his 10 strikeouts, enough said. After the Phillies added a run in the eighth, the Dodgers had something going in the bottom of the ninth with the tying run at the plate. Dee Gordon, in his first Major League game, came in to pinch run for Juan Uribe and scored on Andre Ethier’s fielder’s choice. But that’s it. Ryan Madson kept things from getting out of hand earning his 13th save of the season.
LAst Night's Action: Kings Get Sloppy Win against 'Canes
LA Kings defeat Carolina Hurricanes 4-3. With Head Coach Terry Murray deciding to save goalie Jonathan Quick for division foe Phoenix Coyotes Thursday night, a shaky Jonathan Bernier had a tough go of it for the first two periods having not played since Oct. 10, 2010 in Calgary in a 3-1 loss. Thankfully he loosened up in the third period and the offense bailed him out for the 4-3 win over the Carolina Hurricanes.
LAst Night's Action: USC Dominates Cal
USC Trojans defeat California Golden Bears 48-14. After consecutive conference losses against Washington and Stanford, the Trojans decided to take their frustrations out on the Bears. The first half belonged to the Trojans as they racked up 42 points and 372 of their total 589 yards while shutting down Cal in every phase of the game.
LAst Night's Action: Ducks Shutout in Opener by Red Wings
Detroit Red Wings defeat Anaheim Ducks 4-0. To be honest the Ducks didn’t look horrible the entire game, but early scoring by the Wings took the Ducks out of it. Johan Franzen got things started 5:11 in the game with Mike Modano, freshly signed after a nice send-off by the Dallas Stars, following up just 24 seconds later to give Detroit the quick 2-0 lead. Their overall deficiencies were further exposed as Pavel Datsyuk (5:29) and Dan Cleary (16:55) added two goals in the second period. Two positive notes for the Ducks: their penalty-kill group did not allow a goal in six Detroit power-play opportunities for 9:09 minutes, and top draft pick Cam Fowler played well in his debut playing 20:48 with five blocked shots and a hit. The Ducks will have to quickly regroup as they have a game Saturday night in Nashville. Jonas Hiller made 39 saves for the Ducks while Jimmy Howard saved all 21 shots for the Red Wings.
LAst Night's Action: The Almost Perfect Edition
Almost Perfect. Almost 12 years after making his Major League debut for the Toronto Blue Jays, Philadelphia Phillies’ starter Roy Halladay made his first postseason start on Wednesday...
Phillies Take Rubber Game from Dodgers
All the optimism after the Dodgers won four straight games last week to get to within 4 ½ games of the wild card have all but vanished now. Two solo homers did Clayton Kershaw (L, 11-9) and the Dodgers in as Philadelphia Phillies’ starter Roy Oswalt (W, 10-13) took a no-hit bid into the sixth inning for the Phillies’ 5-1 win and a 7 ½ game lead over the Dodgers in the wild card race.
LAst Night's Action: Angels Fall Short in Seattle
Seattle Mariners defeat LA Angels 3-1. Howie Kendrick’s ground-rule double in the eighth inning brought home Alberto Callaspo for the game’s first run. But Angels’ relievers Kevin Jepsen (BS, L, 2-4) and Francisco Rodriguez could not hold on to their slim lead as the Mariners essentially paper-cutted their way to three runs. Angels’ starter Dan Haren pitched on the edge for seven innings giving up seven hits and two walks but yielded nothing.
Phillies Earl Weaver-ed the Dodgers
It was a game that Hall-of-Fame Baltimore Orioles manager Earl Weaver would have been proud of. Armed with three-run homers in the second and third innings, the Philadelphia Phillies powered their way to an 8-4 victory fending off a rally by the Dodgers.
LAst Night's Action: Angels Score A Run (And More)
LA Angels Seattle Mariners 5-3. With the aid of the long-ball in the sixth inning, the Angels took the sting of their weekend sweep at the hands of the Orioles by pounding the Mariners. Peter Bourjos and Bobby Abreu hit solo homers and Hideki Matsui hit a two-run homer to break the 0-0 stalemate in the sixth inning. After the Mariners got two back in the seventh inning, the Angels scored once in the eighth inning thanks to a bases-loaded balk by reliever Sean White. The Mariners would get one more thanks to an error by Bourjos and a wild pitch by closer Fernando Rodney, but that would be all she wrote. Ervin Santana (W, 14-9) went 7 2/3 innings giving up only two runs striking out four.
Hiroki Kuroda Nearly Spectacular Against Phillies
It wasn’t quite a spectacular night, but it was good enough as Dodger starter Hiroki Kuroda one-hit the Philadelphia Phillies through 7 2/3 innings for the Dodger 3-0 victory.
Dodgers Fall 10-4 to Phils, Lose NLCS Again
For the second consecutive season, the Dodgers fall to the Phillies in the NLCS in five games. All that remains of a season filled with promise and optimism is a pool of disappointment.
RIP
One stinking out. That’s all the Dodgers needed.
The Dodgers had closer Jonathan Broxton who has been one of the more reliable players they had to hold a slim 4-3 lead.
He came in the eighth inning to get out of a two-on, two-out jam and got Jayson Werth to fly out to right field.
Good going so far.
A Season on the Brink
In a seven game series, the winning team needs four victories to advance to the next round. Although the Phillies hold only a 2-1 series advantage, make no mistake: Tonight is a must-win for this Dodgers squad. Following last night’s public execution of Hiroki Kuroda, the Boys in Blue are reeling.
Shortest Dodgers-Phillies NLCS Game 3 Recap Ever
Cliff Lee started. Cliff Lee pitched. Cliff Lee conquered. On the upside the Dodgers didn't waste a good start by a starting pitcher. Phillies lead 2-1 in the NLCS, and the sky isn't falling.
Dodgers Outlast Pedro, Attack Phillies Bullpen
For seven innings, game two of the National League Championship Series was a game played to Renoir-esque beauty. For the players in the game and the diehard fans, the beauty of this pitcher’s duel couldn’t fully be appreciated. But from afar it was a complete piece of art.
But the Dodgers stayed persistent and used the ugly strokes painted by the Phillies reliever and defense to come away with a 2-1 victory tying up the series 1-1.
Dodgertown Before the Storm
It has been a long wait for Dodger fans. The Phillies pushed the Dodgers around last year in the 2008 NLCS. Philadelphia made short work of the Boys in Blue, sending them home in just five games. And it wasn't that close.
Dodgers Aim for Phillies
t’s a rematch in the National League Championship Series! It’s the Dodgers and the Philadelphia Phillies!
Last year the Phillies came to the series being the cock of the walk physically intimidating the young Dodgers by pitching inside. While Dodgers starter Hiroki Kuroda shot back in game three, the tone had been set. The Phillies were going to take the pennant, and the Dodgers could do nothing but stand there.
Dodgers Faceoff Against Phillies in NLCS Rematch
The Dodgers and the Philadelphia Phillies will meet in the best-of-seven National League Championship Series for the second consecutive year. Last year the Dodgers fell to the eventual World Series champion Phillies in five games. Game one will be on Thursday at Dodger Stadium at 5:07 pm. All games of the NLCS will be broadcast on TBS with Chip Caray doing play-by-play and Ron Darling and Buck Martinez doing commentary. Dodgers-Phillies LiveBlog 6/6/09
On this day Dodger manager Joe Torre is only undecided about one thing: which horse to bet on in the Belmont Stakes.
LAst Night's Action: There Will Be A Game Seven
Houston Rockets defeat LA Lakers 95-80. You've got to be fucking kidding me. Let's take a look at the box score. The Lakers attempted 23 threes in this loss. In game five the Lakers attempted 13. While the Lakers were trailing by 15 in the second quarter it was very frustrating to see them settle for jump shots rather than take it to the hole. In the third quarter they responded well and cut the deficit to two, but then their defense fell apart. They made Luis Scola look like James Worthy while Pau Gasol looked like a big stiff. So let's review. No Tracy McGrady. No Yao Ming. No wins against the Lakers in the regular season. And now we're going to a game seven?
LAst Night's Action: The Calm before the Storm
LA Dodgres defeat Philadelphia Phillies 9-2. Mike Scioscia's Tragic Illness wrote a post in the morning about James Loney not hitting a homer. On cue, Loney hit his first homer of the season, an Earl Weaver, against Phillies starter Jamie Moyer in the fourth inning that helped the Dodgers break the game open in a five run inning. While it wasn't a steal of home, Matt Kemp scored on a Randy Wolf bunt - not quite a squeeze play but just as effective. Meanwhile the pitching held things together thanks to Wolf's strong six innings giving up an earned run on a Jimmy Rollins solo shot in the second inning. The bullpen didn't completely implode which is all any Dodger fan can hope for.
LAst Night's Action: Lakers Respond
LA Lakers defeat Houston Rockets 118-78. The start of the game was very touch and go. The Rockets were setting good screens and moving the ball crisply. The was tied 18-18 at the 5:20 mark in the first quarter when the Lakers dropped the hammer. They took advantage of every Houston turnover making this game a complete laugher in the second quarter with the Lakers leading by 25 points at the half. The question would remain whether the Lakers had the killer instinct, and they answered it by going up by 40 points by the end of the third quarter.
LAst Night's Action: Raindrops Keep Falling on Their Head
Tampa Bay Rays and Philadelphia Phillies 2-2 (bottom of 6th inning). There have been rainouts in the World Series before. But never before has a game been suspended in the World Series. Cole Hamels had managed to keep the Rays down to only one run until the top of the sixth inning when the Rays manufactured a run to tie the game. Although the commish Bud Selig promised that even if the Rays hadn't scored the tying run the game wouldn't have been called, it allowed the Rays to take a sigh of relief. Meanwhile the Phillies once again regressed to the team that couldn't get a hit with runners in scoring position. The final 2 1/2 innings will be played tonight at 5pm. The Phillies still lead the series 3-1.
LAst Night's Action: Farmar Continues to Lead Lakers to Victory
LA Lakers defeat Charlotte Bobcats 102-98. Jordan Farmar led all Lakers scorers with 17 points in just 22 minutes played to help the Lakers squeak past the still-winless Bobcats. After trailing by six at half time and by as much as nine in the third quarter the Lakers started to clamp down on the Bobcats to get back into the game. With an Andrew Bynum slam dunk to open up the fourth quarter, the Lakers took their first lead since the first half. Although Pau Gasol and Bynum seem to be playing better together, they still have a lot of shore up. Scary moment happened in the second quarter when new Laker Josh Powell and Kobe Bryant both went up for a rebound and collided knees. Bryant landed awkwardly and hyperextended his knee. He will be day-to-day.
LAst Night's Action: Kings Get Avalanched
Colorado Avalanche defeat LA Kings 4-3. This game was lost in the second period when costly turnovers by the Kings led to three goals scored by the Avs. While the Kings offense is promising, they puck handling and defense needs to be shored up if they hope to make a playoff run. Thankfully it's only the fifth game in the season. Game highlights below.
