For dogs, summer can be the worst time to be without a home, as it's the slowest season for adoption, reports the OC Register. To combat the problem, a local German Shepherd Rescue group is trying to adopt 63 dogs in 63 days -- between July 9 and Labor Day -- in an effort to make room for more who need temporary homes. more ›

Meet Poppy and Penny, Orange Tabby female siblings who are approximately 8 months old. They were found cowering near a water heater during the rainy season in San Fernando. The lucky sisters were scooped up by a nice lady and brought to Purrrfect Solutions Feline Rescue for shelter and TLC. Poppy and Penny greet new visitors and love receiving pets and attention. Over 64 animals went missing from six shelters over the past year, reports KTLA. The animals, most of which were dogs, were reportedly "highly adoptable," said KTLA. It's usually the smell that is the give away when it comes to cat hoarders. And it was indeed the smell that tipped neighbors off in Santa Ana last month to the home of the people who work with the Cat Connection Rescue Network Inc., the OC Register reports today. Inside the home were 110 cats, and two young children. Both the kids and the kitties were removed from the property in a five hour-long effort on February 8th. more ›

On Saturday, Los Angeles-based pet products company Dogswell was one of the sponsors behind the Homeward Hound Hike, a benefit event held in Griffith Park to raise money for Friends of Animals. The organization is a no-kill dog and cat shelter that has been around since 1983. They are a volunteer-only group who rely on private donations for support, and who focus on helping as many animals as they possibly can. At the event were dog enthusiasts and hikers, as well as their furry four-legged friends, including several available for adoption.
