One word: government. Farrell believes, essentially, that the government and the music industry should totally start a band. The parks and recreation department for sure has a van we can use places to rock out, and your mom and the neighborhood won't mind the ruckus because they'll be so stoked by all the local merch being sold.
Perry Farrell Has A Plan To Save The Music Bizapalooza
Massive Attack & Thievery Corporation @ Gibson Amphitheatre | Live Review, 11/07/10
The “Monsters of Dub” double-bill of Massive Attack and Thievery Corporation wrapped up two months of co-headlining American tour dates in Los Angeles as part of the “LA 101” event at the Gibson Amphitheatre on Sunday night. The inspired pairing pulled an impressively large crowd that ran the gamut including post-rave survivors, music nerds, a thick swath of the city’s creative class and party people just down for heavy beats and heavier vibes (man).
Yoko Ono and Plastic Ono Band - Orpheum Theater 10/1/10
Ever since her Fluxus days, Yoko Ono’s art has often revolved around the challenging of her audience’s assumptions, specifically about the nature of art, social mores, gender roles, and the nature of celebrity. The live show she brought to the Orpheum last weekend continued this tradition, bringing together a collective of first-rate musicians and famous guests for a show that held enormous emotional impact. It was a surprisingly diverse (where else are you gonna get RZA, Iggy, Vincent Gallo and Carrie Fisher on the same bill?) and even accessible package for a woman whose music is often thought of as difficult and anti-rock.
But anyone expecting a Yoko show to be two hours of oi-yoi-yoi-yoi warbling hasn't heard her records, especially the new one, Between My Head And The Sky, which made up a good part of the set list. We heard a lot of different kinds of music, some of it simple, gentle and lovely. Some of it was tense and funky, some of it joyous and rocked-out. And, yes, some of it was dissonant, and she did break out the oi-yoi-yoi every so often. But the most discordant moments added texture, some of them loud and powerful, some quiet and fragile.
Perry Farrell Celebrates The Big 5-0 With A Star Studded Bash
The front man of Jane's Addiction, Porno For Pyros, Satellite Party and a number of other side projects celebrated his 50th birthday with a rock 'n roll blow out at the Mirage in Las Vegas Saturday night. It was a who's who of Hollywood and Rock N Roll with Deborah Harry, Bill Morrison, Tom Morello, Billy Idol, Juliette Lewis, Sen Dog, Bobo (both of Cypress Hill) and many more in attendance. Check out the flyer with all the guests for the complete list.
X to Rock the Fonda Tonight, Tomorrow
If you live in Los Angeles or know anything about punk rock circa 1977 then you know about X. If you don't, Perry Farrell will tell you in the clip on the right. Farrell introduced X last month at SXSW, headliners of Spin's day party at Stubb's BBQ. The place was only two-thirds full after a mass exodus of sweater vests following a short set by Vampire Weekend. But all four original members of X -- now touring in celebration of their 31-year anniversary -- proved once and for all that punk's not dead (or at least that rock and roll is alive and kicking).

LA, International Bands in the Spotlight at Detour
New York you're bringing us down. One look at this weekend's Detour Fest lineup and it appears that Los Angeles, once again, is the center of all things rock. While dozens of acts will descend on downtown LA this Saturday, from as far as Australia, Sweden, France, Mexico, and Missouri, the NYC rock scene is MIA. Hell, even the two-headed Raveonettes are staking their claim to Hollywood, listed as hailing from "New York, Los...

Perry Farrell's Satellite Party Flash Mob Sign-Up
If Perry Farrell wants to have a Flash Mob situation happen in Venice on Sunday, fine. Bro invented Jane's Addiction, an LA band so great it ranks right up there with the Doors, Guns n Roses, and the Beach Boys. Like Brian Wilson, Perry could have holed himself up in a house doing drugs and thinking about surfing, but instead he invented Lollapalooza and then made the underground classic film The Gift. So if...
Ruby Isle's "Teenage Riot" and more Music News
- We get a lot of press releases. We get lots of music. We got lots of invites. And lately we have been getting a lot of eCards. We appreciate all of it, but what we most appreciate is when something rules. Not only does Ruby Isle's version of the classic Sonic Youth tune, "Teenage Riot" rule, but so does the bio that describes the band (after the jump). - Snoop Dogg is getting...

The -isty week
We track an award-winning TV writer who worked on Good Times to a homeless shelter and see a Little Old Lady get a jaywalking ticket because she can't get across fast enough (in the same post!). Poets invade Metro and an LAist contributor's new book asks WWJB.
