The always innovative LACMA understands that everyday objects are so much more than that. In celebration of that notion and, well, the soon-to-open Resnick Pavilion, the museum invited percussionist and internet musical filmmaker Ben Meyers to check the new grounds out and make some of music of it with yarn mallets and drumsticks. Free (Classical) Concert Alert: The L.A. Percussion Quartet
The Los Angeles Percussion Quartet (recently awarded a 10,000 dollar grant from the Theodore Presser Foundation) is performing a free concert tonight at 8 PM at Newman Hall on the USC campus. The ensemble-in-residence of the LA Composers Project will perform works by Naidoo, Guinivan, and two works from Jeffrey Holmes. Piano Spheres regular Vicki Ray will also accompany the LAPQ on a few works. For more information, click here.
Tablacentric: Two-Week Long Residency Starts Tonight
Two years ago, Machine Project hosted a month-long Tablacentric residency, featuring the tabla -- a traditional drum of northern India. Twelve tablas were set up all month at Machine Project, and workshops and sessions ranged from tabla lessons to film screenings, cooking lessons, and a talk on robotics and the tabla. The month's events were devised and organized by Robin Sukhadia aka Tablapusher, a tabla performer, educator, and innovator.
