Tonight In Rock: Pearl Jam, Datarock, Paper Route, Voxhaul Broadcast

Tonight legendary Seattle-based alternative rockers Pearl Jam will be headlining a sold-out show at the Gibson Amphitheatre with none other than Claremont-bred multi-instrumentalist Ben Harper. Norwegian electro rock outfit Datarock (LAist Review, #2) are poised to take on the El Rey Theatre with English pop savant Esser in tow. And, lastly, local indie rock act Voxhaul Broadcast and LA-by-way-of-Pennsylvania indie rockers Eastern Conference Champions will be performing at the Echo in celebration of former LA Times music critic Kevin Bronson's first year blogging at Buzz Bands. But we strongly suggest heading over to Spaceland to catch Nashville-based electro-infused indie rock quartet Paper Route.

In 1995, Pearl Jam toured in support of their third full length, Vitalogy. Though the album wasn't the traditional send up to the band's unparalleled Ten, it was to be an otherwise ordinary tour of the best that grunge rock had to offer, save for one looming message: Ticketmaster is the devil.

Pete Thomas, a drummer since he was a kid in Sheffield, England, joined Elvis Costello to form the Attractions and continues as the drummer for the Imposters. He has also played as a session musician with countless artists including Johnny Cash, Sheryl Crow, Neil Finn, John Wesley Harding, Joe Jackson, Los Lobos, Joan Osbourne, Pearl Jam, Bonnie Raitt, Squeeze, Richard Thompson, Rufus Wainwright, and the Waterboys. In 2003, Thomas was inducted into the Rock...

Can we fast forward through the rest of the American Idol season? We already know the two finalists will either be Melinda Doolittle vs. Lakisha Jones (if America has its way) or Antonella Barba vs. Sanjaya Malakar (if the site votefortheworst.com has its way). It was boys' night out on American Idol and as a bunch, they were pretty bad sucked. Some of the lowlights included: >> Sanjaya with a new, straighter (more masculine???)...

Every morning at 6am we will be posting a video of someone singing or playing the "Star Spangled Banner". Back in the day television stations would end their "broadcast day" with an instrumental of the National Anthem accompanied by images of dandelions blowing in the wind, of flags being held by children, and olde fashioned barbers using leeches on alleged witches. When the song was over, the screen would flicker and a test pattern...

Texas is thawing, the Northeast is freezing, and a sort of natural order seems almost restored to the Ist-A-Verse. Almost.

Greetings from Drip City! -- The land where Jimi tread, Pearl Jam spread, and Kurt got dead. Watching last night’s Seattle auditions was like watching nine thousand Nells emerge from the forest only to be greeted by a cold and critical society. These hopefuls were awkward and fascinating and odd. You wanted to laugh, but it was more painful than funny. One could speculate that the bizarro-fest of talent was the toxic byproduct of...

Now that the weather is more normal we can go back to enjoying the fact that we live in LA and do Southern Californian things like skating, surfing, and editing movies on our Macs.

LAist is currently looking for a few good contributers. Do you have what it takes? Q. Why should I write for LAist? A. LAist is one of the hottest blogs in town. Just over the last twelve months our page views have continued to climb, increasing each month. This month we have quadrupled in popularity compared to last year at this time. This means that what you write will actually get read - one of...

There's only one band that matters in rock today. Their music is loud and offensive. They appear to be murdering cartoon characters. They appear to be invading the planet. They're funny and fast and have horrible songs, but you will never go to a Gwar show and come out of the pit unscathed without a smile on your face. Pearl Jam doesn't have the balls to let them open for them which is another...

"Love Pearl Jam. But Pearl Jam now is like the Gap crowd. The baggy trousers. It's a date. It's nice, lovely music. You know, there is a whole other world out there. But people are snobbish and don't want to mix with it. We love those people. We embrace them. They are as loyal as they can be." - Sharon Osbourne, LA Times 7/6

It just occured to us that we like the new Paris Hilton single “Stars Are Blind” (Heiress Records/WB) better than the entire new Pearl Jam record cleverly titled "Pearl Jam" (J-Records).

There were many repulsive things about Pearl Jam during the short yet beautiful Grunge Years. All of it had to do with their music.

Do you realize that The Replacements' "Let It Be" is 22 years old? Indeed, if "Unsatisfied" was a chick, she could buy you a drink at the swinging party. In 1997 Warner Bros put together a 34-track double disc of Replacements "hits" called "All For Nothing / Nothing For All" but none of their earlier groundbreaking Twin/Tone material was included.

LAist has so much fun this week! They go to E3, where they overhear the timeless remark "Man, this is where nerdy girls get laid." Is that a promise? They also give us this week's best CDs and make us realize that LA is the best place to use Zillow.

The Bellrays Have a Little Faith (Cheap Lullaby) – Local rock band with a powerful female soul singer. Catch them live at Sea Level Records on 5/2 at 7:00 PM and Safari Sam’s on 5/12. Listen to some tracks on their Myspace page.

Torontoist throws down the gauntlet and challenges all comers: pillow fight, bitch. They also stand up for a fellow blogger taking heat from the TTC and welcome city-wide WiFi.

Tuesday returns, and with it the overwhelming urge to empty the entire contents of one's bank account into the waiting coffers of Amoeba Music. It is a daily struggle not to give up the entire grocery budget in favor of finally compiling the ultimate record collection, but a struggle LAist is winning nevertheless—unless the bi-weekly shopping trips count against the groceries.
