Peanut Butter Company Knew They Were Shipping Salmonella

Peanut Butter Company Knew They Were Shipping Salmonella

The FDA has said the Georgia peanut plant that is the focus of the salmonella recall knowingly sent out tainted products, according to an e-mail breaking news alert from the LA Times, who noted the plant had not gone through an inspection since 2001. The FDA is also under fire for recalling incorrect products in the past and being too slow with the peanut butter one. One representative has proposed a bill that would create a food-dedicated agency that would separate it from drugs and medical devices. more ›

What Peanut Butter Products Got Recalled at Trader Joes

What Peanut Butter Products Got Recalled at Trader Joes

The salmonella peanut butter recall is still in effect and one of Los Angeles' favorite grocery stores had to pull back a few products, too. Trader Joe's late last week announced that they were taking caution and de-shelving their Peanut Butter Chewy Coated & Drizzled Granola Bars, Nutty Chocolate Chewy Coated & Drizzled Granola Bars and Sutter’s Formula Cookies "because the products contain peanut butter that was manufactured by Peanut Corporation of America (PCA), which is the focus of an ongoing Salmonella investigation," they said in a press release. more ›

Put That Peanut Butter Cookie Down!!!

Put That Peanut Butter Cookie Down!!!

The LA County Department of Public Health has issued a warning about frozen cookie dough that was sold in several area schools as part of a fundraiser. Aside from the fact that raising funds by selling frozen cookie dough is kind of weird, the problem is that the dough could possibly be tainted with salmonella. Tasty! more ›

Tonight in Rock: Rock The Bike!!

Tomorrow is the finish up the AMGEN Tour of California in Pasadena. But before hitting the old money city, they're headed towards Santa Clarita this afternoon (where Six Flags Magic Mountain has decided to stay put). From 4 to 10 p.m. tonight “Rock the Bike,” a free outdoor cycling expo and music festival, will bring together an array of people following the stage 6 finish. Various bands will be playing and headlining act, the Gin Blossoms, will be on stage around 8 p.m. (of course, if it rains, who knows what will happen, this is an outdoor event). The tour itself is aired on the cable channel, VERSUS, at 2 p.m. today and tomorrow. For more check our TV weekend listings. more ›

Tonight in Rock: War Tapes, KRS ONE, Elaine Brown

Two highly recommended Hip-Hop shows take place tonight. Experience the powerful Gospel of Hip-Hop with KRS ONE at The Roxy or explore some electronic Hip-Hop with Sole and the Skyrider Band. And we mean no disrespect to Peanut Butter Wolf who is playing at El Rey with Chromeo, but we know for sure that show is sold out (scalp away!). The Troubadour has some jazz fusion rock going on (MP3s after the jump) and you can find straight ahead jazz at UCLA. more ›

LAist Cookie Exchange: The Peanut Butter Kiss

LAist Cookie Exchange: The Peanut Butter Kiss

I am a peanut butter freak. And my Mom knows it. No matter how old I get (and I’m waaaay past the age of consent), she makes my favorite cookies – Peanut Butter Kisses – when I come home for Christmas. Typically, I’ll be sleepwalking through the door straight from a redeye from LAX to the east coast with nothing but the sofa is calling my name. But there’s always a stack of PB Kisses on the counter that need a little loving before I can sleep. Who am I to disappoint my mother? (Don’t answer that.) more ›

LAist Cookie Exchange: Oatmeal Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies

LAist Cookie Exchange: Oatmeal Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies

I think it started about a year ago, when the students in one the classes I was teaching found out that I was going to cooking school. "Will you make us something?" they begged. I pictured myself whipping up something in the French tradition from my growing pile of recipes and modifying it to serve thirty or so college freshmen. "No," I replied sensibly. "But if you're good, I'll make you cookies!" more ›

On Moorpark Street: The Coffee Fix

On Moorpark Street: The Coffee Fix

Ventura Boulevard tends to get all the buzz when talking up the Valley. Boutiques, restaurant after restaurant, salons, Starbucks with TV celebrities, etc. But what about the main street just north of Ventura - Moorpark Street? You can easily miss The Coffee Fix with it's anonymous facade on the inner southwest corner at Moorpark and Whitsett in Studio City. Directly across the street is the modern looking and newish Studio City library which dominates... more ›

Toys for the Cool Kids

Toys for the Cool Kids

Outside the Standard Downtown on Thursday night was a two-hour wait wrapping around the corner, a flashy red carpet, and huge security guards keeping attendees in order. With a quick passing, one would most likely think Hollywood’s A-list celebs and socialites were inside swanking it up, but in reality, the mega-event was in celebration of the release of Kidrobot’s new toy, the “Hello My Name Is Dunny,” seen above. more ›

Blue Bongo's goodbye bash

Blue Bongo's goodbye bash

If you're looking for something to do tonight, why not treat yourself to the last night ever of Blue Bongo. The regular club at Little Pedro's has managed to be dance club, blues club, avant-rock club and artist hangout all at once without ever copping attitude. But Little Pedro's, a chronically underappreciated Moroccan-Spanish hybrid bar, restaurant and club on the southeast edge of downtown's art-n-architecture district finally captured the imagination of a new buyer. Who lacks the imagination to keep the Blue Bongo folks around. more ›

Jazz Mondays at the Lincoln Steakhouse

Jazz Mondays at the Lincoln Steakhouse

For the past few months we've noticed a trend with restaurants and the many inventive and interesting ways they've put a twist on dining out on Monday nights. Santa Monica's Lincoln Steakhouse is one such place, and their Jazz Mondays is one sure way of losing those weeknight blues. The Lincoln, which opened just over a year ago, is a top notch steakhouse offering high-quality cuts of prime grass-fed California beef, along with a number of tasty side dishes and steak alternatives. Our favorite is the Cowboy Steak, a savory 16 oz cut that pairs perfectly with sides like the grilled asparagus wrapped in proscuitto and drizzled in Hollandaise sauce, the Logan Turnpike White Cheddar grits, or the savory Mac & Cheese made with gouda and sprinkled with light Japanese bread crumbs. We'd started out with some thin slices of seared Ahi tuna complimented by cucumber sorbet, which was an intriguingly fresh surprising taste. The Lincoln has an excellent wine menu, and their servers are well-informed and able to make a suggestion to match your preferences. The southern twang to the classic steakhouse fare menu is thanks to their chef, Jack Melson, who spices things up with a Bayou and bourbon flair. more ›
