A section of the Pacific Coast Highway was closed this morning after part of a tree fell on a bus around 8 a.m. in the area of Chautaqua Boulevard. The tree fell onto some power lines and a Metro Route 534 bus, knocking out electrical service to about 1,200 customers, according to Kim Hughes of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power. No injuries were reported. Eastbound PCH remained closed between Las Tunas beach and Temescal Canyon Road while crews worked to clear the scene.

An 38-year-old homeless man died after he was struck by an SUV last night on the Pacific Coast Highway, just north of Sunset Blvd. The LAPD describe the driver of the green sports utility vehicle--possibly a 1999 to 2002 Nissan Pathfinder--as a white male, but have few other clues other than he was driving northbound.

A fire near Will Rogers State Historic Park was reported at around 2:00 p.m. today, but was put out in just under an hour thanks to the 64 firefighters on the scene.

At 7:53 a.m., Ventura County Fire dispatchers received calls of a wildfire in Point Mugu State Park's La Jolla Canyon north of Malibu. As of 8:55 a.m., it burned 10 acres of brush on the westside of the canyon, according to Capt. John Alford of the Ventura County Fire Department. Dominate northeast winds are blowing the fire towards the top of a sheer cliff where the Pacific Coast Highway lays below and the ocean 50 ft away.

A small brush fire that began early last night is under investigation for the possibility of murder and arson. The fire near the Pacific Coast Highway and Topanga Canyon was first reported at 6:27 p.m. and burned three to four acres before being knocked down at 7:08 p.m., according to LA County Fire over the phone. Firefighters noticed a vehicle in the fire and upon further investigation, found a dead body inside. Calls made to the LA County Sheriff's Department described "persons fleeing the area," says the LA Times. Also: An earlier fire on the other side of the mountains in Agoura Hills that started around noon is also under investigation for arson.

Chip Kinman and PCH will be celebrating the release of their new album “My First Punk Rock Record” with a performance this evening at La Luz De Jesus Gallery. The band will be performing their album in its entirety, augmented by an interpreter for the deaf.

A fire that began with a spark of lightning in Big Sur is now responsible for burning over 42 acres and is reportedly only 3 per cent contained. A 12-mile segment of the Pacific Coast Highway (Highway 1) has been closed down as firefighters work to control the blaze. Over 1,000 fires have been burning in Northern California for the past week, many of which were ignited by lightning strikes. President Bush has declared a federal state of emergency for the afflicted areas.

Today was the day that the first Barbie doll made her debut at the American International Toy Fair in New York in 1959. Make fun of her all you want, but Barbie's an icon whose life has been far more interesting than any reality show, and yes we know if she were real her head wouldn't be supported by her body dimensions or some such thing, but come on. Following a flap from an LA Times article that found 60,000 LAUSD students attend school within 500 feet of a freeway, the school district is looking into ways it can reduce the health hazards for kids close to pollution-filled freeways. Maybe the school district can use the $53 million in funds they're trying to recoup to build domes over playgrounds. Thousands of birds and an immeasurable amount of fish have died as a result...
