LAist Film Calendar 07/28-07/31: Summer Frights
Nothing screams summer like Sleepaway Camp! It's a delightfully sick slasher that wrings every penny out of its low budget. It's part of an informal series of summer frights screening this weekend!

Video: Helping Comics Are The World
Despite a lack of demand, "We Are The World" is back.
This is all thanks to the charitable efforts of Scott Aukerman (LAist Interview) and a host of comedians who regularly perform at Aukerman's Comedy Death-Ray show at the UCB Theatre in Hollywood. Actor Kurt Russell (of "Captain Ron" fame) also lent his pipes.
Box Office Review: Expendables Not Expendable!
The Expendables has legs, albeit creaky and wobbly ones. The Sly Stallone actioner hauled in $16.5M ($64.8M) to hold off shitty newcomer Vampires Suck ($12.2M | $18.5M). In close succession after that it was the silly Eat Pray Love ($12M | $47.1M), the mediocre Lottery Ticket ($11.1M), the okay The Other Guys ($10.1M | $88.1M) and the nude-tastic Piranha 3D ($10M).
Weekend Movie Guide: Piranha 3D Looks Awesome!
Is anyone else as excited to see Piranha 3D as I am? I am both shocked and delighted at the great critical response this paean to 80s jiggle flicks is receiving. In a completely different vein, The Tillman Story provides a searing look into the phony stories that our government tried to tell us about the "heroic" death of Tillman at the hands of the enemy. No, he was negligently -- not accidentally -- killed by his own troops. Kids movies are usually terrible, which is why Nanny McPhee Returns is such a welcome film. Take your kids this weekend. Jennifer Aniston movies are also usually terrible, and the same seems to hold for The Switch. Why is Jason Bateman slumming? Real quick: see A Film Unfinished; don't see Vampires Suck; don't see Lottery Ticket; see Mao's Last Dancer; and don't see The Scenesters.
Seven Questions: Paul Scheer, Actor/Comedian/Host of The Streamy Awards
Prior to his days as one-third of MTV's "Human Giant (LAist Interview)," co-star of FX's "The League," panelist on VH-1's "Best Week Ever" or guest starring on "30 Rock," comedian/actor Paul Scheer was making audiences laugh online as one of the stars of "Shutterbugs," a Channel 101 classic featuring fellow "Human Giant" stars Rob Huebel and Aziz Ansari (Seven Questions, LAist Interview) as cutthroat agents to infant Hollywood stars. Paul, who recently hosted "A Night of 140 Tweets" -- celebrity tweet-a-thon benefiting the people of Haiti, continues to make us all laugh online with his numerous Funny or Die.com videos and his must-follow Twitter updates.
DVD Tuesday: She Wuz Robbed!!
Now that all the publicity and hype have passed, isn't it obvious that there is no way in hell Sandra Bullock should have won an Oscar instead of the divine Carey Mulligan in An Education? I had serious doubts about Sherlock Holmes when it was originally announced, but I found it to be much better than I expected. Sure, it was your typical, bloated, over-done studio film, but it was actually a pretty good one. Baader Meinhof Complex was the best foreign movie you didn't see last year. If you couldn't get onto the incredibly exclusive guest list at UCB, at least now you can see the star-studded A Night of 140 Tweets on DVD. Cheers to Paul Scheer for organizing this charity bonanza. Spankers and Horat released in the same week? Amazing!
LAist Interview: 'Human Giant' - Season 2 Premieres Tonight @ 11pm on MTV
Human Giant unleashed itself upon an unsuspecting public last year via MTV and the bell just rang for Round 2 - are you ready? There's sketch comedy, there's underground sketch comedy, there's in your face on-the-streets sketch comedy, and then there's Human Giant, a team that presents, in each episode, collections of bits that are more like experimental movies than the sketch comedy we've been seeing for the last 15 years. There's plenty of parody to be sure although none of it is familiar-feeling, "safe", or boring - which is perfect for Human Giant's 11:00pm slot (what, the kids can't handle this at 10:00pm?).
Human Giant Cracks Up SXSW
Besides exposure for new and upcoming music, SXSW also serves as a launching pad for products, companies and shows like MTV's upcoming Human Giant. Starring funny men Aziz Ansari, Rob Huebel and Paul Scheer, the show kicked off a sneak preview party last night at Friends on 6th St. We ran into Sam Grossman, development exec at MTV. He talked about the new sketch comedy show with us over beers. “There’s a Bugs Bunny...
