Weekend Movie Guide: Tron's Legacy? Awesomeness!
You've tracked the rotating light-cycle billboards on Santa Monica & Westwood all year. You've listened to the Daft Punk-composed soundtrack all month. You've visited the pop-up shop at Royal/T. You may have even stole a peek at San Fernando Valley spoof Pron. Finally, Tron: Legacy bursts off the screen this weekend! The blockbuster sequel to the cult sci-fi hit screens in 3D, but to really get in the game, try and catch an IMAX 3D screening or the props exhibit at El Capitan.
Box Office Review: America Still Dreaming!
For a third consecutive weekend, Inception ruled the box office. The twisty thriller brought in $27.5M ($193.3M) to easily top the unbelievably horrible Dinner with Schmucks ($23.3M). Salt enjoyed a solid second week ($19.2M | $70.8M) while Despicable Me ($15.5M | $190.3M) continued to print money. Newcomer Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Pussy Galore ($12.5M) rounded out the top 5.
Weekend Movie Guide: Get Low, Schmucks!
The movie that you should see this weekend is Get Low. The movie you probably will see is Dinner for Schmucks. The movie that no one should (or will) see is Charlie St. Cloud. The movie that only kids should see is Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore. The movie that makes you feel like you are taking medicine is The Dry Land. The movie that is entirely unnecessary is Hugh Hefner: Playboy, Activist and Rebel. Sorry for the short post today. Blame jury duty! But see Get Low!
DVD Tuesday: I Love You, Man!
I keep trying to resist these manufactured "bromance" movies, but damn if they don't continue to work on me. While some men enjoy the guilty pleasure of crappy, godless action spectacles like Transformers and G.I. Joe, I am helpless against the machinations of Paul Rudd. I gave 17 Again a chance in the theater only because I still have a soft spot for Matthew Perry. Probably should have waited for the DVD. The Class was one of the best-reviewed films of the year, so naturally no one saw it during its brief theatrical run. Correct that mistake today. Zooey Deschanel gets nekkid in Gigantic! Yay! (uh, the movie is okay, too). The way I figure it, any time I get a chance to point someone toward Led Zeppelin, I'm gonna point them toward Led Zeppelin.
Box Office Review: America Knows Nothing
Two very good studio films opened at the box office this weekend (I Love You, Man and Duplicity) and, naturally, neither of them managed to win the box office crown. That went to the terrifyingly moronic Knowing which tricked America's rubes into shelling out approximately $24.8M of hard-earned money. The quite funny I Love You, Man under-performed to the tune of $18M as did Julia Roberts' Duplicity which only managed to bring in $14.4M. Last week's champ Remake of Witch Mountain fell all the way to fourth but still had a solid performance ($13M/$44.7M). The ambitious Watchmen, however, continued to flounder ($6.7M/$98M).
Weekend Movie Guide: Toupee Alert! Toupee Alert!
Knowing looks so spectacularly bad that it may almost be worth seeing. Nic Cage really is a national treasure. The Apatow brand is so strong these days that a movie like I Love You, Man -- which isn't even an Apatow film -- actually feels like one. I'll see it for the ravishing Rashida Jones alone. Does Julia Roberts still have juice at the box office? The performance of Duplicity will let us know. I'm gonna go with a 'no' on this one. I've never understood the fuss about her anyway. It's still appalling that she beat out Ellen Burstyn for the 2000 Oscar.
TV Junkie: American idolPhone; Michael J. Fox Back on Primetime
"American Idol" fans can now shell out $1.99 for an iPhone app that will provide them with a weekly update them on the vital statistics of the remaining contenders for the rest of this season. What isn't clear from the press release is if there will be geosynchronous Ryan Seacrest hair gel monitoring.
DVD Tuesday: Let This One In!
Let the Right One In was a fiendishly good reimainging of the vampire story. Naturallly, it is now being re-made into what will surely be an inferior, American film. I thought Mickey Rourke gave the performance of the year in The Wrestler, but Sean Penn was almost as impressive with his rendering of the late Harvey Milk. Speaking of fine actors, Anne Hathaway stirs my drink. While I liked Synedoche, New York, I was let down by it because of my absurdly high expectations for Charlie Kaufman's directorial debut. Role Models was better than it had any right to be. I'm still amazed that Seann William Scott is the sole survivor of the American Pie crowd.
Weekend Movie Guide: Carpe Diem!
I doubt that Soul Men will be very good, but I'll watch it just to see the late Bernie Mac. His untimely death teaches all of us not to do tomorrow (or months from now) what you can do today! I know the perfect girl to take to the ghoulish Repo! The Genetic Opera, but she's so darn unavailable! Were there unresolved plot points from the original that required a Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa? Does anyone not like Paul Rudd? The great David Wain (watch this!) directed Role Models so I will definitely check it out.
Weekend Movie Guide: One gem, much coal
This weekend's new movie offererings are so spectacularly awful that I felt compelled to lead with the dreamy 1961 French classic, Last Year At Mariendbad, which opens this weekend at the Nuart. You'll probably walk out of the theater wondering what in the hell you just saw (it's trippy and plotless), but at least you'll be challenged a little bit. That certainly won't be the case with Jessica Alba's latest snoozer, The Eye. This "horror" movie is, of course, a re-make of a better Japanese film. Please Jesus, make this trend and this actress go away.
