DVD Tuesday: Gonna Get in the Hot Tub! (again)

A significant portion of the American movie-going audience probably avoided Hot Tub Time Machine because of its banal title. They missed a movie that was funnier than it had any right to be, particularly in the manic performance of Rob Corddry. Any fan of The Doors should automatically buy When You're Strange. It features a wealth of material previously unseen (though the narration by Johnny Depp leaves something to be desired -- namely, passion). If you missed White Ribbon during its brief theatrical run last winter, correct that mistake today. Michael Haneke is as good as it gets, folks! Think it's a coincidence that the film The Eclipse was released on DVD on the eve of Twilight: Eclipse hitting theaters? I say, nay! more ›

DVD Tuesday: Mel's Back And He's Pissed!

If you're able to put aside the anti-Semitic | uber-Catholic ravings of Mel Gibson, he can still be a very effective actor, particularly when cast in his wheelhouse role: a crazy cop bucking the system. Edge of Darkness is a pitch-dark drama about a father hell-bent on avenging his daughter's death. Sure, it's overly plotty, but I dug it. The same can't be said for Legion -- a silly meditation on angels and prophecy and farts (okay, I was tuned out by the end so maybe that last part didn't actually happen). Will the vampire craze just die out already? Daybreakers was a needless addition to an over-supplied genre. I don't miss Daria as much as I miss the ground-breaking Beavis & Butthead, but it's still funnier than anything currently being broadcast on MTV. more ›

Box Office Review: This Is Getting Ridiculous!

Box Office Review: This Is Getting Ridiculous!

Avatar continued its inevitable crawl towards history, taking in a robust $36M ($552M) to pass The Dark Knight in domestic receipts and Titanic on the international front. By next Monday, it should be the all-time box-office champ (not accounting for inflation, of course, in which case Gone With The Wind would be the easy winner and Avatar would be a mere 26th). The awful Legion had a respectable opening to place 2nd ($18.2M), just ahead of last week's runner-up The Book of Eli ($17M | $62M). Thankfully, The Tooth Fairy underwhelmed in its debut ($14.5M) while The Lovely Bones rounded out the top 5 ($8.8M | $31.6M). more ›

Weekend Movie Guide: Extraordinary Crap!

             + 1 more

Having seen -- oh, I don't know -- 20,000 commercials for Extraordinary Measures over the last few weeks, I still think I'm looking at a promo for a TV movie. The real question is will "I already work around the clock!" replace "Where's my family" in the Harrison Ford repertoire? Geez, Legion looks awful. Does everyone else just cackle when that old bird crawls up the wall? Can anything be done to stop Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson? His latest atrocity is The Tooth Fairy. By all rights, Creation should have been a good movie. Great story, solid cast, super production design. Reviews, though, have been dreadful. Shame. To Save a Life looks way too fucking wholesome. People who loved Dumb Fucking Chipmunk Movie will probably love it. Pass. more ›

Box Office Review: More Blart

Box Office Review: More Blart

To the great dismay of the human, vampire and lycan kingdoms, Paul Blart: Mall Cop once again triumphed at the box office this weekend ($21.5M/$64.8M). Underworld: Rise of the Lycans made a game effort, but only managed a close second-place finish ($20.7M). After that it was the resilient Gran Torino ($16M/$97.5M), the silly Hotel for Dogs ($12.3M/$36.9M), the surging Slumdog Millionaire ($10.5M/$55.9M) and the, uh, bloody My Bloody Valentine 3-D ($10M/$37.7M). more ›

Weekend Movie Guide: I'm Back!

Weekend Movie Guide: I'm Back!

In anticipation of the Oscar Best Picture nod that never came, The Dark Knight is back in theaters today. If you are one of the 113 people who somehow didn't see this movie over the summer, now might be the time. You know how you can tell when a franchise is completely and utterly out of steam? When the star of the franchise stops appearing in the movies. Such is the case with Underworld: Rise of the Lycans which lacks the lovely Kate Beckinsale (but does at least add the equally lovely Rhona Mitra). more ›
