This is Hendrix's original grave in the humble family plot before his memorial was built. It seems a little sad and neglected in this picture, but this Seattle cemetary is actually lush with grass. The only reason for the dirt is because the constant stream of visitors created a well-worn path that didn't allow the grass to grow. On November 26, 2002 Hendrix's body was exhumed and reburied under a much more fitting marble dome memorial in another section of the same cemetary, Greenwood Memorial Park. If you are in the area and would like to pay your respects, you can find the location at findagrave.com.

Seattle is all aflutter about salaries at KEXP, the hallmark indie rock public radio station. As the station struggles to become independent after an initial infusion of cash from Microsoft billionaire Paul Allen, it has made a few financial missteps. But that hasn't stopped it from paying their AM guy, John in the Morning, a $120,000 salary. Which is less than he'd make on commercial radio, but is pretty hefty for a 30-ish indie rock lover in Seattle.
At approximately 8:16 AM this morning, SpaceShipOne landed successfully in Mojave after reaching outer space — making them the first of over sixteen privately-funded companies to win the $10 million dollar Ansari X Prize for private space travel.

Congratulations to Mike Melvill of Mojave, the Yuri Gagarin of private space flight. He's the pilot of SpaceShipOne, the first ever private spacecraft. SpaceShipOne was built by designer Burt Rutan and funded by ex-Microsoft guru/#1 Portland Trail Blazer fan Paul Allen. The ship blasted out of Earth's atmosphere this morning at Mach 3, making SoCal aeronautics history. Melvill is a veteran test pilot who has logged over 6900 flight hours across over 100 different planes. According to his bio, he built a Long-EZ jet (pictured) at home and flew it around the world. Nice. LAist watched The Right Stuff last night and he is feeling a little warm and nostalgic to see another test pilot achieve the coveted title of "Astronaut."
