This weekend’s LA Times Festival of Books was jam-packed with all things literary. USC’s campus swelled with book-loving Angelenos. Children enjoyed readings by R.L. Stine and Jamie Lee Curtis, USC students waxed poetic from the USC stage, and laughs ebbed from comedian Patton Oswalt's audience. Publishers met new readers, bookstores found new customers, and literacy nonprofits got due public attention. And this weekend’s panels were pretty entertaining. In case you missed any of the festivities, here are some highlights from the 2011 LA Times Festival of Books:
The LA Times Festival of Books, Abridged
Pencil This In: Patti Smith at Book Soup, Celebrating Soul Train, Free Theater Readings
It’s Hawaii Night at The Grammy Museum. Beginning at 7:30 pm tonight, celebrate Hawaii’s cultural heritage through its music. Current Grammy nominees in the Best Hawaiian Music Album category Tia Carrere—we’ll always remember her from Wayne’s World--Daniel Ho, Amy Hainaiali’i, George Kahumoku Jr. and Jeff Petersen perform on the GRAMMY Sound Stage. It’s free to the public, and doors open at 7 pm. If you mention attendance at Trader Vic’s, you’ll receive 20% off dinner items (not booze, merchandise, tip or tax).
Tonight In Rock: Patti Smith, Mos Def, Fruit Bats, The Parson Red Heads
Tonight legendary Chicago-bred alternative rock singer-songwriter Patti Smith will be gracing the Hammer Museum. NY-based actor/MC Mos Def is poised to take on the Key Club in Hollyweird. And, lastly, local indie pop outfit the Parson Red Heads (LAist Review, #2, #3, #4) will be performing at the Echo with none other than LA-based folk pop trio the Chapin Sisters. But we strongly suggest heading over to Spaceland to catch Portland-by-way-of-Chicago folk rock outfit Fruit Bats. LAist favorites, San Franciscan psych rockers Citay are slated to kick things off.
Patti Smith: Dream of Life Airs Tonight on PBS
About one year ago, Nuart Theater in Los Angeles premiered the award-winning Dream of Life, a documentary about rock legend Patti Smith, filmed by Steven Sebring. It was not highly publicized but the theater was crowded with an audience spanning all ages, all curious to see how a piece that was filmed over eleven years would portray Patti Smith. At the end of the documentary, my friends and I found ourselves wanting more, even though we secretly admitted it was quite long.
DVD Tuesday: Horses, Weed, Costner
I'm a huge fan of the revisionist Western movement currently threading its way through our culture, but didn't Deadwood do it so well that everything else feels tired (fine films like Appaloosa included)? Conversely, can anyone name a good Kevin Costner film in the last decade? And you can't say The Upside of Anger because he was just a co-star! Humboldt County is all about weed and freedom so this column approves purely on principle (review coming up very soon!). Two Tyler Perry movies in one week?! Who did I piss off?
Tonight In Rock: Patti Smith, Tegan and Sara, Under the Influence of Giants, Franklin for Short
Tonight the "Godmother of Punk," Patti Smith, will be gracing LA with a performance at the vaudeville-esque Orpheum. Canadian singer-songwriters Tegan and Sara will be finishing off the third night of their sold-out four-date extravaganza at the Henry Fonda Music Box. And, lastly, Mr T's Bowl will play host to the excessively sweet pop antics of Ventura's own Franklin for Short, Auckland-based the Ruby Suns, LA-based singer-songwriter Angela Correa and yet another Ventura-based band, the Spires. Call us crazy, but we recommend you go catch the Muslims at the hole-and-corner Pehrspace. Something about the no-frills vibe at the tiny office space-turned-venue really gets us amped about tonight's show. Oh and need we mention that it's BYOB?
Pencil This In: Friday
FILM: The Aero in Santa Monica screens the L.A. premiere of the rock doc Patti Smith: Dream of Life at 7:30 tonight. “Twelve years in the making, the first film directed by fashion photographer Steven Sebring stitches together layer upon layer of human experience to paint a portrait of Patti Smith, the artist as a tireless and dynamic worker for music, poetry, peace, family and friends.”
Box Office Review: Dark Knight again!
For an unprecedented fourth week in a row, , which pulled in $10.7M ($19.7M) despite the fact that none of the film's winsome co-stars had a topless scene.
Win a Clash Shirt from The Sweet Relief Musicians Fund
Don't forget to donate to the Sweet Relief Musicians Fund this month, because you should, and for a chance to win their latest fun gift: a special, one of a kind silk-screened Clash T-shirt designed by bassist Paul Simonon (now of The Good, The Bad, and The Queen). The shirt goes to one lucky person who donates at least $20 to the charity between January 15th and February 26th. Simonon designed most of the band's look, and this is an original, 1977 era "Security" T-shirt. The shirt's cred is upped one further by the fact that its original owner was Patti Smith, who gave it to her drummer, Jay Dee Daugherty, who in turn donated it to Sweet Relief. Find out how to donate at Sweet Relief's website or myspace.
Pencil This In: Tuesday (The New Year Hungover Edition)
It’s pretty quiet today in LA. So take another Alka Seltzer and rest up for work tomorrow.
"It’s Hard To Find Oatmeal In Italy" - Deep Thoughts by Patti Smith @ The Santa Monica Pier - 8/16/07
Bluesy, smokey, growly, and deep -- Patti Smith the original She-punk poet, commanded the Santa Monica Pier last Thursday night. Her voice was clear and the sound was fantastical. Her stage banter was absurd and somewhat drowned out by the rumblings of the mostly parental type fans in attendance. I’m pretty sure there was talk of tacos, but I’m definitely sure there was discussion of oatmeal. Patti thought she was at a festival, but hey,...

Patti Smith at the Roxy: Pushin Too Hard
Last night Patti Smith put the rock in the Roxy. Then she tore it back out, spit on it, stomped on it a bunch of times, punched it in the face and put it back. Patti was in her element last night, backed up by a band comprised of family and long-time friends. Supported by one of her earliest collaborators, guitarist and legendary rock journalist Lenny Kaye, Patti Smith had heart and soul to spare....

How much is a legend worth?
Maybe you should think about buying a ticket to the Second Annual Hullaballo benefitting the Silverlake Conservatory of Music. The benefit, at the Edendale Grill on June 21, promises to be a swank eastside evening. Rob Zabrecky, who led Possum Dixon and is a magician, will be MC. There will be a dinner buffet, open bar and, of course, live music. Expect performances from the conservatory, Catherine & Jonathan Karoly from the LA Phil and unnanounced guests. The headlining act is Flea (from the Red Hot Chili Peppers), who is the conservatory's founder, performing with Patti Smith — who, with her Lower East Side credentials, is the east-sider-est of all.
