Pastrami, Hold The Listeria: 16,000 Pounds Of Meat Recalled

Nearly 16,000 pounds of ready-to-eat pastrami and roast beef deli meat products from a Los Angeles-based food company are being sought in a Class I recall, "a health hazard situation where there is a reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death," because of a potential bacteria contamination, according to the USDA. more ›

Happy Hot Pastrami Sandwich Day

Today is National Hot Pastrami Sandwich Day. To celebrate, carnivores can get themselves to their nearest and/or favorite deli for a stack of meat on their bread of choice (though, come on now, to have a pastrami sandwich on anything but rye bread is sacrilege). Veggies and vegans, if you are craving the flavor without the flesh, hopefully you've got a spot in mind for a meat-free meal that can pass as observance. Not out to lunch yet? Take this quiz to see how much you know about pastrami. And let us know in the comments where you think L.A.'s best Hot Pastrami Sandwich can be found. more ›

Food Truck Farewell: Fresser's Hanging Up the Pastrami

Launched in December of last year, Fresser's is the latest food truck to announce they will be calling it quits as of this weekend. Today they posted on their site: "After much thinking, conversation, and soul searching we have decided that the time has come to close our doors. We enjoyed our time on the Fresser’s truck serving you our delicious pastrami..." more ›

New Truck Will be a Jewish Deli on Wheels

New Truck Will be a Jewish Deli on Wheels

Looks like all the bases are starting to get covered. Last week pizza, this week we learn of Fresser's, which will mostly service Jewish deli meat sandwiches, reports Eater LA via Thrillist. They're serving pastrami, turkey, roast beef and even pot roast sandwiches in addition to " flyover-state-style bowls, jammed with mashed potatoes and gravy and loaded up with your choice of roast beef, pot roast, or turkey & corn, all of which are served with a baguette," says Thrillist. It's already on the streets on the sly and will officially launch in the new year. Follow them on Twitter at @Fressers more ›

Eye Nosh: Is This the Best Pastrami in America?

Eye Nosh: Is This the Best Pastrami in America?

If we're talking nosh, there's no item perhaps more quintessential than pastrami on rye. The one pictured above hailed from a plate served up at Langer's, a deli that has been a longtime favorite of locals, but has now been praised for offering up the best of its kind in the whole country. The accolade comes from writer David Sax, whose pursuit of the pastrami--and other deli delights--was profiled recently in the LA Times. more ›

Villaraigosa's Weekend of Meat-ing, Greet-ing, & Tweet-ing

Villaraigosa's Weekend of Meat-ing, Greet-ing, & Tweet-ing

Incumbent Mayor Antonia Villaraigosa wouldn't take Steve Lopez up on the offer of comparing french dip sandwiches along with his challengers a few days ago, but according to his Twitter feed, he's happy to shake a few hands with voters at another famous LA meat sandwich shop: Langer's Deli. Villaraigosa is kissing babies and finding photo ops as part of a very busy weekend campaign bus tour of the city. Already today he has "rallied the troops in support of the solar plan Measure B" and "open[ed] a Fire Station in the Pico Union area." His campaign blog lists many such visits today and tomorrow (although the midday ones are absent from today's agenda) and includes an awful lot of greeting, and a lot of potential meat-eating. His late-night nosh stops include Canter's Deli at 10 pm and Pink's Hot Dogs at 11. more ›

Langer's Celebrates its 60th today at 1:30pm

The diversity of MacArthur Park couldn't be more dramatic than the 1940's style old school deli known for its pastrami as Langer's Deli, firmly entrenched on Alvarado, and surrounded by Central- and South American cuisine and shops. Langer's keeps it so real that they close at 4pm and take Sundays off. They have cozy, leather booths, a big menu, and bigger servings. LA Observed reminds us that Langer's celebrates their 60th birthday with a... more ›

Oinkster: This Little Piggy Went to Eagle Rock

Oinkster: This Little Piggy Went to Eagle Rock

We wanted to wait a while before checking out the new-ish Oinkster in Eagle Rock--and, admittedly, gear ourselves up for a major pig out on what they call their "slow fast food." So recently we stepped inside the red and white "shack" on Colorado in Eagle Rock for some lunch. Sitting in the interior made us feel like we'd crossed over into one of those nouveau "indie" films with big budgets; maybe it was... more ›
