The Egyptian is having a John Ford film fest this week, focusing on some of the 50-plus films made while he was at 20th Century Fox. Screening tonight is 1924’s The Iron Horse, a silent film that chronicles the American push out West. Ford shot the film on location in Mexico, Arizona, New Mexico and Nevada. The film will be introduced by historian and author Robert Bircard.

THEATRE

Sam Watters, author of Houses of Los Angeles,1885-1935, will be discussing the homes of Eva Fényes tonight @ 7:30pm. Her homes are just two of 75 historic, famous, and outlandish homes Watters explores in his new set of books.

Steve Grody knows graffiti. What he really knows, is L.A. graffiti. Steve has been hunting and pecking his way through our back alleys, empty lots, bridge undersides and train cars for the past twenty years to capture what he believes is an art form unlike any other. The exuberant result of all that research is his latest book, Graffiti L.A., which features kick-ass photos and interviews with L.A.'s most prolific and famously reclusive writers.

The Museum of Jurassic Technology holds cabinets of curiosities, worlds of mysteries, and baffling phenomena explained in scientific, if gently obfuscatory, terms. From a humble storefront in Culver City, the MJT has created some of the most interesting artistic-technological-confusing exhibits and ideas circulating today. Maybe that's why the MacArthur Foundation gave its proprietor, David Wilson, one of those genius grants in 2001.

This Sunday, five museums in Northeast LA will throw open their doors (and garden gates) for free. They call it Museusm of the Arroyo Day; it's now in its 16th year.

THURSDAY

The free shuttles will loop throughout the City of Roses during the course of the 4 hour event; park at any one venue and ride around to the rest. Include time to have dinner at the One Colorado restaurants like Gordon Biersch, Il Fornaio, or Akbar. If you're dining ahead of your gallery crawl, between 5 and 6:30 the mention of Art Night will get you a free dessert with the purchase of an entree. To Art Night we say: Sweet!
