Tonight In Rock: Frog Eyes, Or The Whale, Madi Diaz, Emily Jane White

Tonight critically acclaimed Canadian indie rockers Frog Eyes will be headlining the Echo, ringing in their fifth full-length studio album, 2010's Paul's Tomb: A Triumph, with none other than Seattle's own indie rock quintet Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band in tow. Nashville-bred singer-songwriter/actor Landon Pigg is poised to grace the Troubadour with LAist favorites, Berklee grad and Nashville's most promising pop folk songstress Madi Diaz. And, lastly, San Franciscan folk singer-songwriter Emily Jane White, who is fresh on the heels of the US release of her second album to date, 2010's Victorian America, will be taking on Pehrspace. But we strongly suggest heading over to Spaceland to catch local indie pop outfit the Parson Red Heads (LAist Review, #2, #3, #4). LAist favorites, local alt-rockers Olin & the Moon (LAist Interview) and San Franciscan alternative country outfit Or, The Whale are slated to perform as well. more ›

The Parson Red Heads' Top Ten of 2007

The Parson Red Heads' Top Ten of 2007

I've always been intrigued by other "best of" lists, but this year I decided to take it to a whole new level. I e-mailed a handful of bands that I've seen this past year in order to unearth what exactly captivated them in '07. As music listeners, it is our duty to take a keen interest in our favorite musician's influences. After all, they rocked our little world, might as well see what rocked their... more ›

Sunday Photoist: Inside UCLA Radio

Every so often when we feel so inspired to do so, we feature a photo from a photographer in the LAist Flickr Pool. It's another way of giving the many excellent photographers in our pool the attention that they deserve. Everyone knows Santa Monica College has a radio station (KCRW 89.9). And CSUN (KCSN 88.5) and CSULB (KJAZZ 88.1) too. Even Pasadena City College (KPCC 89.3) and USC (KUSC 91.5) have theirs. Where is UCLA's?... more ›

Sunset Junction Day One Photo Essay

Sunset Junction Day One Photo Essay

Sunset Junction on Saturday was one word: damn hot. Tons of bands played, gallons of sunscreen was applied, and hundreds of gallons of fluids were ingested. However, the sweat poured out in a way that was quite interesting. It was as if all the fluids inside wanted to go outside to see the pretty girls, be amazed by the variety of tattoos, and listen to the beautiful music. It didn't matter how much you... more ›
