Pencil This In: Good and Bad Poetry, Max & Jason at Paley Center

To celebrate the book launch of Pam Russell's new collection B is for Bad Poetry, the Better Off Dead Poets Society and ForYourArt presents an open mic at the Mandrake for people to share their bad poems. The evening’s hosted by Russell, and everyone’s welcome to bring your crappy blank verse and doggerel to foist on unsuspecting bar patrons. 8 pm.

TV Junkie: Interview with 'Bored to Death' Team of Ted Danson, Jonathan Ames & Jason Schwartzman

The season finale of HBO's "Bored to Death" is this Sunday at 9:30pm and it is a must-watch. There are plenty of McShows out there but this is not one of them and nor will it ever be. The brainchild of author and memoirist Jonathan Ames, the show about an author and part-time amateur private investigator bursts with uncompromised originality in every episode.

Pencil This In: New Filmmakers LA Monthly Screening, Donovan Leitch Musical @ Largo

Donovan Leitch’s musical The Dark Root of the Dream is a mix of glam rock, literature and theatre, and it take to Largo’s stage tonight at 8 pm. Written by Leitch and guitarist Larry Cordola, the songs center around the character Mr. E, the fictional son of poet Virginia Woolf. “After his mother commits suicide early in the boy’s life, E is raised by gypsies, going on to become an egotistical, disillusioned rock star. Subsequently, Mr. E struggles to fill the void left by his mother’s death - with drugs, music and love. Once all these fail, he is forced to confront his darkest dreams in order to survive.” Tickets are $20.

Interview: Film Critic Elvis Mitchell, Host of KCRW's 'The Treatment'

KCRW has plenty of excellent original programming, but among the best is "The Treatment", a weekly film-heavy pop culture show that airs on Wednesdays at 2:30pm. We suggest that you crawl through the archives and grab podcasts to play during long drives or other such travel. Mitchell has been a film critic for many newspapers, most notably and recently, the New York Times. He has taught at Harvard, is the host of Turner Classic Movie's "Elvis Mitchell: Under the Influence", and has produced two excellent documentaries about the experiences of being black in this country: The Black List: Volume One and The Black List: Volume Two.

Paleyfest 2009:  True Blood Panel

At 5 p.m. last Tuesday, the line for the True Blood panel at PaleyFest snaked around the Cinerama Dome toward the Arclight entrance. Many of the predominantly female fans of the HBO series had been camped out since early afternoon, traveling from as far as Texas and New York.

The Paley Center hosts the cast and creative team of Monk tonight at 8:30 pm. There’s usually a screening, followed by discussion and Q&A. In person guests include Tony Shalhoub, Traylor Howard, Ted Levine, Jason Gray-Stanford, among others.

FILM: To celebrate the opening of Saw V later this week, the ArcLight Hollywood’s having a Saw marathon all this week. Tonight at 10 pm is Saw.

TEEVEE: The Paley Center is hosting a Fall Preview Party for NBC shows tonight, starting at 6 with screening at 7. The shows being featured have changed since the original lineup, so out with Kath and Kim and Knight Rider, but in with Chuck, Life, Lipstick Jungle and Kings. The event is free to the public, but an RSVP is required.

THEATRE: The Company of Angels and The Management in NYC present the West Coast premiere of The Chalk Boy tonight at the Alexandria Hotel in downtown LA. Set in a small town, the story focuses on the relationship between four girls. “They struggle with faith, friendship, sex, the occult, algebra, and the disappearance of . . . The Chalk Boy. This is a deathly black comedy that punches as hard as your high school bully.”
