LA Lakers defeat New Orleans Hornets 110-99. The Lakers hang on just long enough defensively to give the Staples Center crowd their tacos. Andrew Bynum led all scorers with 21 points and nine rebounds while Kobe Bryant scored 18. The Hornets who were without Chris Paul and Peja Stojakovic were led by former UCLA point guard Darren Collison who scored 20. The Lakers blew the game open in the second quarter taking a 20 point lead going into the locker room at the half. While the Lakers dropped off the intensity a little bit in the fourth quarter, it’s yet another win for the Lakers who take the lead in the conference thanks to the Phoenix Suns losing to the New York Knicks.

Kemp, Hudson Win NL Gold Glove Awards
Dodgers centerfielder Matt Kemp and second baseman Orlando Hudson won the National League Gold Gloves for their respective positions. This is the first Gold Glove for Kemp and fourth for Hudson becoming the first Dodgers duo to win the Gold Glove since Cesar Izturis at shortstop and Steve Finley in centerfield in 2004. Kemp led all center fielders and ranked third among outfielders with 14 outfield assists. Kemp becomes the second everyday Dodger center fielder to win the award. Willie Davis took home the award three straight years from 1971-1973. Congratulations guys!
Lingering Issues Addressed by Dodgers
When we last left the Dodgers they had a lot of things to address for the playoffs. Manager Joe Torre had no idea who would start in St. Louis for game three of the National League Divisional Series nor who would start at second base.
These two questions finally had some sort of closure today.
The starter for game three will be Vicente Padilla while Chad Billingsley will start if there’s a game four in St. Louis.
Belliard Complicates Infield
The Dodgers surely have a luxury item in infielder Ronnie Belliard.
When he was traded by the Washington Nati(o)nals on August 30, I immediately thought he was this year’s Julio Lugo: an average player with experience but not much else. At Washington this season he had a .246 batting average and an OPS+ of 75 (100 being an average player).
Orlando Hudson Always an All-Star
Baseball is often used as a metaphor for life. In so many ways, it is about the moments. Not just the moments on the field, but every moment from the time you enter the stadium gates until you leave.
Some are content to gloss over these details, fixated on box scores and home runs and batters charging the pitcher’s mound. To leave it at that is to miss the more human side of the game, the side that makes you ignore the bloated player salaries and the excessive cost of beer and hot dogs at the stadium. There’s humanity in the tiniest moments.
Dodgers Sign Second Baseman Orlando Hudson
According to Dodgers.com, the Dodgers have signed second baseman free agent Orlando Hudson to a one-year incentive laden deal. The deal has a base salary of $3.4 million with an additional $4.6 million in incentives with the Dodgers also giving the Arizona Diamondbacks a first-round draft pick in the upcoming draft. Hudson will be taking over second base for the retiring Jeff Kent. Where this puts Blake DeWitt is still unknown. Hudson is a three time Gold Glove winner and a 2007 All Star with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
LAst Night's Action: Kings Top the Senators
LA Kings defeat Ottawa Senators 1-0. It's good when a team wins a game they're supposed to win. The Kings did just that against a horrible Ottawa team who just fired their head coach over the weekend. It wasn't a pretty game by any means - neither team got more than 30 shots on goal - but goalie Jonathan Quick saved all 29 shots on goal for the Kings to preserve the win. Michael Handzus scored a goal late in the third period to break the tie.
