Giovanni Ramirez, one of the men suspected in the beating San Francisco Giants fan Bryan Stow on Opening Day at Dodger Stadium, has been transferred to a prison in San Diego, according to ABC Local.
Bryan Stow Beating Suspect Moved To San Diego Prison 33 Days After Arrest
Parole Agent Tip Led To Suspect Arrest In Bryan Stow Attack
Police in the Sunday morning SWAT apprehension of one of the two men suspected in the brutal beating of Giants fan Bryan Stow were led to the individual on a tip from a parole agent, reports the L.A. Times. The agent alerted LAPD detectives of his suspicions "that a parolee under his supervision may have been one of the attackers."
Victory Knot a Victory for Dodgers
One day before the season begins, I found myself heading up Elysian into the Dodger Stadium parking lot. The gate attendant draws my attention to follow a blue line that will take me to the Stadium Club. I am no stranger to the Stadium Club, but I never had noticed the super-convenient blue line that takes you on a beeline directly to Lot M. It kind of made me think about all the things I don’t notice in life. Like the birthdays of people I care about.
Meet Dylan Hernandez, Dodgers Beat Writer for the L.A. Times
Dylan Hernandez, the 28-year-old Dodgers beat writer for the Los Angeles Times, is set to embark on his second full season covering the team. The native Southern Californian and graduate of UCLA has worked for a slew of papers before the Times hired him in 2007. He recently ended one of the more difficult periods in his professional life: covering the Manny Ramirez saga for the Times through sleepless nights and hundreds of stories. I recently caught up with him about the rigors of covering the sport, how traditional sports journalism has been affected by baseball bloggers and what has to happen for the Dodgers to resign Manny Ramirez.
Extra, Extra: Pepper Spray Doesn't Work for Journalists
- Newly elected state speaker, a Democrat named Karen Bass who was raised in Los Angeles, has made friends on both sides of the aisle, the LA Times said. She is the first African-American to assume the top spot and has some pretty lofty goals, including providing healthcare and improving education. Wait, those are things EVERY politician should be doing.
- Of course, by now you know all about the L.A. Marathon. But you may not have heard that the Los Angeles Fire Department treated 73 participants; transporting 23 of them to area hospitals. None of the injuries were life-threatening, they said.
- What's one of the best part about Spring Training? Rumors! The Daily News reports that Nomar could play a "handful of games" at shortstop this season. Just four more weeks until Opening Day.
- The blood in my veins is Dodger Blue, but the color of my face when driving to games is sometimes red. So, I applaud the City Council for at least broaching the possibility of public transportation to Dodger Stadium late this week.\
- An El Segundo woman warded off an attacker last night with pepper spray as he pinned her to the ground straddling and fondling her. She reached for the pepper spray and ran away, gagging and coughing.
- But her weapon of choice would not have worked if she was a reporter at the Daily News. Yesterday, we told you that the Daily News laid off 22 staffers earlier in the week. Today, the list of the fireds was published. The deceased includes Alex Dobuzinskis, a great reporter who covered Glendale and Burbank and the News' lone Washington D.C. reporter.
- The newspaper business is not the only one hurting these days. Nearly 1,600 teachers could lose their jobs as Orange County's 28 school districts scramble to find ways to cut from their operating budgets amid a mounting state budget crisis.
- Is Hillary Clinton being subversively endorsed by Saturday Night Live? Last week, SNL feature a skit parodying the media's "love affair" with Barack Obama and last night, they had Clinton on the show getting two minutes of free campaign air time. SNL has not officially endorsed Clinton, but should media outlets allow candidates a free shot at advertising? If NBC allowed Obama two free minutes, don't you think the Clinton camp would be the ones needing a pillow?
What's Going On Dodgers?
So the guys are in Vero Beach now, and now my sphincter pulsates in anticipation for March 31: Opening Day at Dodger Stadium.
Baseball's Home Run King* Indicted on Federal Purjury
The other shoe has dropped in the Barry Bonds steroid scandal as today federal prosecutors formerly accused the former Giant of obstructing justice and lying under oath. "I'm surprised," John Burris, one of Bonds' attorneys, told the AP, "but there's been an effort to get Barry for a long time. "I'm curious what evidence they have now they didn't have before." Even the president of the United States chimed in - thru a proxy....
MLB Totally Cool With Substance Under K-Rod's Cap
When an author of a book about cheating in baseball noticed Angel closer Francisco Rodriguez going to his cap an inordinate amount of times on Opening Day, he wrote about it on his blog and got photos, and his allegations against K-Rod made it to the front office of Major League Baseball. Where it died. Yesterday MLB called the Angels to tell them that there would be no investigation of K-Rod's cap because there...
We Can Go 161-1, Right?
Can someone please tell Dodger’s head athletic trainer Stan Conte to make sure Prozac takes his meds before he pitches?
Championship Rings for your Fantasy Leagues
Happy Opening Day, the one day where hope is in everyone's hearts and the future is as bright as a brand new box of baseballs.
Defending Offense
The major league baseball season begins tonight, with the St. Louis Cardinals beginning their title defense against the New York Mets. And, as always, with Opening Day comes optimism. Fans across the country have convinced themselves that this year the (insert local team here) will challenge for the pennant and make a strong push in October. Next year is now.
Here Comes the Blue!
The baseball off-season creates a brewing anticipation that crescendos to the molto-fortissimo of Opening Day.
Style Mavens Flock to H&M Pasadena Opening
Lines stretched around the block. Helicopters buzzed overhead. It was madness today at the grand opening of the Pasadena H&M, the first H&M retail outlet in Southern California. Tucked between the Tiffany and Apple stores on Colorado Boulevard, the warehouse-like space showcases on two floors H&M's womenswear line. Sorry gents, ladies only. You'll have to wait until the Oct. 26 opening of the Beverly Center H&M. Half an hour before the official noon opening...
Mixed Opening
While LAist doesn't doubt the Angels are a great team, we'd like people to evaluate the Dodgers on more than one game against Jason Schmidt. Perhaps halo fans should be concerned that only Vlad Guerrero could muster any damage off of Texas' Ryan Drese. But then again, the Angels do have Vlad Guerrero to alleviate most of their concerns.
