Not a good day for use of force reports in Long Beach. In two separate incidents, Long Beach police used their guns injuring four suspects with one officer also being shot. In the first incident, Long Beach undercover detectives witnessed a drive by shooting in Compton and pursued the vehicle onto the 710 freeway. It ended in a shootout: three suspects hit and one officer. Later, an officer responding to a vandalism call led to the suspect being shot when he tried to grab the officer's baton.

About that Incident at Sunset/Vermont Yesterday
Details have finally been pieced together after yesterdays officer involved shooting at Sunset and Vermont yesterday after a robbery at a LG Electronics store. When police arrived, a foot chase ensued leading to an officer, who was "slashed in the head with a knife" by one of the robbery suspects, shooting off two rounds. One hit the suspect injuring him and another hit the windshield of a route 240 Metro Bus.
LAPD Shooting at Sunset & Vermont, Streets Closed
Update, 2:40 p.m.: According to Officer Diaz per KNX1070, the suspect hit one of the officers twice in the head with the butt of a knife. The other officer fired a couple shots with one apparently entering a Metro bus slightly injuring one passenger. The other shot hit suspect who was brought to hospital in stable condition. This was at the Southeast corner of Sunset and Vermont.
Both the LAPD and the LA Fire Department are reporting incidents in the vicinity of Sunset and Vermont Boulevards, but both cannot confirm if they are related at this early stage.
Officer Involved Shooting in Santa Ana
Yesterday morning, it was Encino. Last night, it was Santa Ana when a man who was told by police to leave an area got involved in a struggle with officers. He tried to grab a gun from one officer's holster when the another officer shot him dead, according to police. Several officers had minor injuries.
Shot LAPD Officer in Long Beach May Have Been Drunk
On Wednesday after midnight an off-duty LAPD officer was shot by Long Beach Police after calls came in that a man was wandering down a street with a gun. Sources within the department told the Press-Telegram that friends of shot officer told LBPD he had been drinking heavily before he wandered off. The paper also says unamed officers described the gun as either a "large shotgun or a pellet gun with a light on the end of it." They also said that the shooting happened within a matter of seconds of the officer's arrival with no explanation of what exactly prompted officers to shoot.
