Brent's Deli vs. Rick Caruso

Since Brent's Deli (of Northridge fame) opened in Westlake Village, the place has been packed. Well, it looks like developer Rick Caruso (of The Grove, The Americana fame) noticed this as well, and his center at the same off-ramp with Bristol Farms as anchor tenant is about to get a Nate & Al's from Beverly Hills, complete with the Mendelsohns. Let the Deli wars begin!

Northridge: One Killed in an Apparent Case of Mistaken Identity

A 21-year-old man was killed in Northridge yesterday when a vehicle pulled up and began opening fire, possibly mistaking the victim for someone else. About one half hour earlier, two groups of black males got into a verbal dispute at the corner of White Oak Avenue and Lassen Street. One group fled when they realized the other group was armed with handguns. Most ran across the street to take cover on a church's grounds.

After a controversy over bicycle lanes that were going to be striped, then not, then were, the Bureau of Street Services has confirmed the new lanes will be striped in October, the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition reports in a newsletter today.

LADOT Says They're Caught in Rumor Mill about Eliminating Bicycle Lanes

It's been a trying few days for the Los Angeles Department of Transportation as strong emotions from bicyclists and other complete streets activists rallied to save the elimination of bicycle lanes on Reseda Blvd. to make room for peak hour traffic. A Northridge Neighborhood Council had it as an agenda item earlier this week, prompting a huge turnout by the public to fight the measure.

Neighborhood Council Rejects Unstriping of Bicycle Lanes

In order to increase road capacity on Reseda Boulevard in Northridge, the city is proposing the removal of bicycle lands and street parking. Complete streets activists quickly caught wind of this and showed force at a meeting last night, ultimately succeeding in getting the neighborhood council, who is only advisory to city councilmembers, to vote down support for the measure. "We have taken the first step to build a strong coalition with Reseda Boulevard homeowners, residents, apartment building managers, business owners, and other stakeholders. This effort has just begun, and it won't be easy. Fighting City Hall never is. But that will make our ultimate victory that much more significant," Glenn Bailey, the city's Bike Advisory Committee Chair, wrote in an e-mail. Damien Newton at LA Streetsblog disagrees: "the LADOT only considers community support essential until it's proven that they don't have it. Then the "silent majority" of car commuters that use the road are the people's who's theoretical concerns take precedence."

City Considering New Locations for More Parking Meters

The city is looking into installing new parking meters that could potentially bring in $1 million in additional revenue to help fill the budget gap, but officials say they don’t have enough resources to do so. LADOT told councilmembers at last week’s Transit meeting the plan would not make any money in its first year because the meters would cost $1 million to install. Additionally, officials said the department is already 18 percent understaffed in maintenance technicians, making it harder to collect money and fix existing meters.

Walking home from a party in April, Haik Oganyan and a friend became victims of a street robbery that turned deadly."Oganyan had left the party with a friend and began walking west on Gresham Street toward their car," explained the Daily News. "Three men described as Hispanics with shaved heads demanded their wallets and keys. The victims complied, but the suspects attacked Oganyan and their friend anyway. LAPD Pedestrian Sting Ends with Hundreds of Ticketed Drivers in Northridge

There have been a lot of deadly pedestrian deaths this past week making the news. USC, Fountain and La Brea, Highland Park, to name a few. Today, LAPD's Valley Traffic Division is out in force near California State University Northridge sending plain clothed cops into a marked crosswalk near Reseda and Deerborn and ticketing those who fail to yield. "Some of these motorists are not only failing to yield, they're slowing and then making a conscious decision to accelerate past the ped," exclaimed observer and activist Stephen Box on Twitter.

A 64-year-old Valley man who got into an argument with his wife last night died after he set fire to the house. The LAPD was called to 18907 W. Soon after, flames erupted from a bedroom and quickly spread to the attic as the fire department was called. The man was later found dead in the bedroom. His death may have been suicide, but police cannot confirm that yet.

Is the 'Big One' 15 Years Late and Counting?

It seems the San Andreas fault has a habit of shaking us up pretty badly once every 137 years, and scientists from UC Irvine believe we are long overdue for the "Big One." The last "massive" earthquake to rumble along the infamous fault line was in 1857, "when one struck at an estimated magnitude of 7.9," according to an AP article in the Long Beach Press-Telegram. That means the next major quake is now 15 years behind schedule on the San Andreas; the 1994 Northridge Earthquake, whose 15-year-anniversary was last weekend, was a magnitude 6.7, however it was mainly centered on the Northridge (sometimes called Pico) Thrust, not the San Andreas. Several recent small earthquakes are serving as a reminder that here in Southern California we've built our cities on Mother Nature's turf, and the "Big One" could hit us at any moment--one very "Big" reason to focus on preparedness and safety.

CSUN Parking: $125. Street Parking: Priceless.

"Who in their right mind would pay 125.00/semester to spend hours stalking/fighting for parking spaces when you could arrive 15 minutes early, easily park a few blocks away, and walk?" ~ San Fernando Valley Yelp Review of the Day by Erin H. from the blog News Me Baby.

Where Were You on January 17, 1994?

If you were in the Los Angeles area, and you need your memory jolted... Enough of a hint? Mayor Sam reminds us that today marks the 15-year anniversary of the Northridge earthquake, when "a 6.7 magnitude quake with an epicenter near the intersection of Saticoy and Reseda Boulevard in Reseda struck." It was a Monday morning, and MLK day, which meant most folks were snug in their beds hoping to sleep in on the holiday. Instead, the quake was, to say the least, a rude awakening, and a reminder of how precarious life can be when you build your city on top of fault lines. "Seventy-two people died as a result of the earthquake with more than 9,000 injured. In addition, the earthquake caused an estimated $20 billion in damage, making it one of the costliest natural disasters in U.S. history." A couple in their twenties who placed a candle under their Christmas Tree are probably feeling grateful they survived the fire they started around 9:45 p.m. tonight. Luckily, the newish two-story apartment building at 19039 Nordhoff Street in Northridge had a sprinkler system that extinguished the blaze before fire trucks arrived (sidenote: whatever happened to Season 2 American Inventor winner and Ventura County Firefighter Greg Chavez' Guardian Angel for situations just like this?). The fire caused an estimated $10,000 in damage--about half to the structure and half to personal items. No one was hurt, a good thing, especially for a holiday night like this. The last time someone died in Los Angeles due to a Christmas Tree fire was in 2006.

Three men in their mid twenties were crossing a Roscoe Blvd. at Louise Ave. in Northridge this morning when a car making a turn ran into them. "They all suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries," Ron Myers at the LA Fire Department said of the three who were sent to the hospital.

Around 7:30 p.m. Sunday night, a 22-year-old female California State University Northridge student was hit and launched 40 feet from a crosswalk she was walking across. She suffered severe injuries and is listed in critical condition. The LAPD has few clues about the incident, which took place at Reseda Boulevard and Superior Street near campus. What they do know is that the suspect car is possibly a Toyota or Lexus traveling northbound. If anyone knows any information they can report it here.

Three men shot near the intersection near Tampa and Roscoe have been transported to the hospital, two of them in critical condition. Shortly before 4:00 p.m., they were sitting on a bus bench when a red or maroon van drove by and fired several rounds at the men striking all three. Police believe it is gang related and traffic is being diverted around the intersection.

A person was hit and killed by a Metrolink train near Corbin Ave. in Northridge around 7:15 a.m. this morning delaying service along the Ventura County Line. As of 8:15 a.m., the Los Angeles Fire Department was still on scene and said it was going to be a "difficult recovery" of the body. Both side of the tracks were blocked off. It seems that Metrolink is experimenting with Twitter and giving some updates via that for now (kudos to them). The last update from around 8:15 a.m. was "Metrolink Vent. Co. Line train 103 has turned at Van Nuys and will run as train 106. MTA buses to provide alt. trans. Between Van Nuys and Chatsworth."

A situation like this, occurred several times over the past year, according to the LAPD: "In March 2007, a student at California State University Northridge (CSUN) was approached by a suspect who asked the victim to cash a check at his bank. In exchange for his efforts, he would be given several hundred dollars. Unfortunately, the he was unaware the check was forged. Several days later, a hold was placed on his account to cover the bank loss." In many of the cases, victims said handguns were used to intimidate them into taking part in the crimes, which spread to both Valley and Pierce colleges in the past few months. Piecing together clues from the crimes, detectives arrested three suspects in their twenties on Monday, but more are being sought. Police are also still looking for other people who may have been victims of this crime ring.

The Northridge Fashion Center area is getting a development boost with an influx of development projects. Three of the four are mixed use with retail/commercial space on the first floors and the site Kmart is expected to be razed for one of the residential buildings, according to the Daily News. Of course, there are major concerns over increased traffic and to date, there are no major public transit lines in the immediate area. Add to that, more types of these projects are expected to hit the neighborhood.

You walk in and it's like the end of result of a time machine. It's the San Fernando Valley, 1960s, 1970s, maybe. Families and friends are gathered around tables while the three main staff--two mainstay waitresses and the cook, Rudy--rush around serving everyone's bellies to a greasy satisfaction. It's breakfast. It's America's suburb.

When my old boss Mike wrote to me a couple of weeks ago to tell me about Alligator Tacos in the valley, I was immediately sold. Big vicious remorseless killer reptilian taco? I'm so there! Hot's Cantina is in Northridge, inconspicuously occupying a single storefront in a mall. It seemed like this place is all about the ridiculously large nachos and tacos. (Nachos, by the way, were the size of costco pizzas.) Boy, there was a lot of tacos. 8 kinds of chicken, 7 kinds of pork, 9 kinds of beef, 9 kinds of seafood, and even 3 kinds of vegetarian. Oh, and there's a small section labeled "Exotic." I'm here for that. Alligator, duck, shark, kobe beef and lobster, and crayfish.

Say Aloha to the the 50th state with a taste of the food and fun of Hawaii. Lots of Hawaiian shirts and grass skirts, vendors with all sorts of goods, fresh floral leis, loads of food (shaved ice!!!!), and beer. Luckily it won't be a grillion degrees out in Northridge, but put on your Hawaiian Tropic just in case--that California sun still burns through the fog.

Someone trying to kidnap you is never a fun memory. At least when the alleged kidnapper was nude, it's a good story to tell in years to come.

Two female bank employees, ages 41 and 39, were transported to Northridge Hospital in stable condition after they were exposed to a $100 bill at San Fernando Valley Washington Mutual this afternoon. The incident, which took place at 10370 Mason Ave. in Chatsworth, happened around 1:00 p.m. The Los Angeles Fire Department's Hazardous Materials Squad were deployed after one teller complained that her hand was burning after touching the bill.

The city seems to have gone completely mad. From a 16 year-old shot in Northridge to a 70 year-old stabbed to death in Hollywood, Sunday was just another day in what is starting to feel like an out-of-control crime wave.

Good news regarding last week's LAPD shootout in Glassell Park. The fourth and last suspect, a Northridge resident who was the driver of the suspected car, was arrested Monday in Granada Hills. It wasn't that hard either: "he was in the same vehicle police believe was used in the driveby," according to a report by the Daily News.
